It doesnt really matter to us. I just wish our health system got some well deserved attention. So far all thats been thrown at it are crumbs. Lets see some local promises turn to reality.

BBC News - Brexit: Boris Johnson signs withdrawal agreement in Downing Street

today

Boris Johnson has signed the Brexit withdrawal agreement in Downing Street.

He said he hoped it would "bring to an end far too many years of argument and division".

Earlier on Friday, European leaders signed the document in Brussels, before it was transported to London by train.

The signings mark another step in the ratification process, following Parliament's approval of the Brexit bill earlier this week.

The European Parliament will vote on the agreement on 29 January. ...

"This signature heralds a new chapter in our nation’s history."

True. But not in a good way ...   😕

The Washington Post - One of the biggest impacts of Brexit? An end to freedom of movement.

Jan. 27, 2020

As Britain prepares to leave the E.U. this week and enter an 11-month transition period, free movement here is nearing an end. ...

  • E.U. citizens will be able to continue to move here freely through the Brexit transition period, until at least December.

  • But afterward, they will need to apply - and will no longer get preference over applicants from other continents.

  • Prime Minister Boris Johnson has talked up a “points-based” system, similar to Australia’s, that would draw the “best and brightest.”

  • The number of low-skilled immigrants will be slashed.

  • In the meantime, E.U. citizens - some of whom have called Britain home for decades - must apply if they want to stay.

  • If they don’t register by June 2021, they will in effect be in the country illegally. ...

i always find mention of such a scheme interesting. Britain already has a points based system and has been using to control immigration for 10 years.

I guess this allows Boris to turn around in 6 months and say, see, I did it!

The Guardian - Police called in after poster tells residents of flats to speak English

today

“Happy Brexit Day”

A poster telling residents of a block of flats “we do not tolerate” people speaking languages other than English in the building has been reported to police.

The typewritten poster, bearing the title “Happy Brexit Day”, was reportedly found stuck to fire doors in Winchester Tower in Norwich on Friday morning.

Residents reply, OK, but you first.

What a bigoted thing to happen. Considering the variety of accents and vocabulary in use in England, what even is English?

Whoever did it is on the same mental level as the morons who attached the Manchester United chairmans house because they are not playing well.

Lobotomy jobs, all of them. Fortunately in a tiny minority.

I read the poster and I think it specified 'Queen's English'. The first challenge to the idiot(s) that put it up, would be if any is actually capable of that. Knowing the linguistic finesse of the average Brit, I doubt many would pass that hurdle. In fact immigrants, who have often studied English, are frequently better at the grammar.

Yeah, I think this is what annoys them most. The immigrants can not only speak English better than they can, but they can also speak at least one other language.

I met a fascinating lass in a youth hostel in Amsterdam (She worked there), she spoke something like 12 languages fluently and another 14 or so languages where she could make herself understood to varying degrees.

Many Europeans speak four or five. Many Brits can't even speak one.

Reminds me of a Jimmy Carr heckle where an american in the audience says ' if it wasn't for us , you'd all be speaking German'.

Jimmy replies, 'in sixty years? There's no freakin way we would have picked it up by now ! '

A bit off topic but in my case he would be correct. I have no aptitude for learning languages whatsoever. At school I got the lowest rankings possible in any language test despite the effort I put in.
