Vice: Twitter’s T-Shirt Bots Are Undefeated and Verified by Elon Musk

T-Shirt bots have been on Twitter for years, but now they've got blue check marks and prominent placement on your timeline.

...Twitter continues to have a huge bot problem. It’s gotten worse since Elon Musk took over the company.

The most recent fun started on June 9, when the account @dyingscribe retweeted a New York Post story with a comic from artist Raven Lyn Clemens. The comic depicts a woman talking to her boyfriend about a Salon article while the meathead man stares while wearing a shirt that says “the most racist man alive.” @dyingscribes’ post went viral and the replies are full of blue check mark bots who desperately want to sell people the racist man T-Shirt for around 20 bucks.

The T-shirt bots have been on Twitter for years. The bots watchTwitter, wait for the right set of keywords, then automatically set up a store page where they take money to generate a cheap print-on-demand T-Shirt for sale. Responding to a thread with key phrases like “I wish I had that on a shirt” or “custom T-Shirt” will summon the bots to a thread where they’ll generate a website where you can make a purchase.

Over the weekend, people decided to f*ck with the bots. They did this by creating outrageous T-shirt designs and tricking the automated systems into generating T-Shirt designs that might get them in trouble.
...
Before Musk took over Twitter, he promised he would “defeat the spam bots or die trying!” and “authenticate all real humans.” The bots persist and now they’re verified. For $8 a month, someone running an account that steals art on Twitter can buy a check mark. According to Twitter, blue checks “will receive a boost that ranks them closer to the top,” which has made the T-Shirt accounts more noticeable than they were in the past.

Motherboard: Joe Rogan, Elon Musk Instigate Harassment Campaign Against Vaccine Scientist

In a series of events no more explicable if you happened to have a front-row seat to them, Joe Rogan and Elon Musk spent the holiday weekend fomenting a crusade against Dr. Peter Hotez, the pediatrician and vaccine expert. Hotez’s crime was tweeting approvingly about a story I wrote on Friday concerning Rogan’s recent, fawning interview with anti-vaccine activist and presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

In response, Rogan, Musk, Kennedy himself, a host of Twitter’s biggest anti-vaccine and right-wing personalities, rich investors, and people who paid for Twitter Blue spent the next day demanding that Hotez debate Kennedy on Rogan’s show.

The brigading ultimately inspired a publicity-hungry YouTuber who’s dubbed himself a “predator poacher” to harass the 65-year-old Hotez at his Houston home.
...
A critical piece of context here is that Hotez, who speaks often about vaccine safety, is a frequent target of not just the anti-vaccine movement, but the far right
:...
On Friday, Hotez tweeted critically about the Kennedy episode, in which Kennedy recited a three-hour highlight reel of his anti-vaccine greatest hits, plus some questionable statements about 5G, wifi, and a variety of other topics.
...
Rogan responded by offering Hotez “$100,000.00 to the charity of your choice if you’re willing to debate him on my show with no time limit.”
...
(It wasn’t clear, mind you, what precisely Rogan wanted the debate to be about. Kennedy repeated a variety of claims that have been long debunked, like the notion that vaccines cause autism, at this point as old a lie as the anti-vaccine movement has ever promoted.
...
Before long Elon Musk joined in, adding, “He’s afraid of a public debate because he knows he’s wrong,” though it wasn’t clear what he was claiming Hotez was wrong

It used to be called the Circus Maximus and the actors were gladiators. As far as I'm concerned, "Übersmart" and "Koksnase" can beat each other up until they lose what's left of their minds, but I won't watch it.

A grade idiots like Musk and Rogan are best ignored. They only survive on publicity.

Futurism: Elon Musk's mommy says he's not allowed to cage fight Mark Zuckerberg

But Mom!

What started out as a childish gauntlet throwing — by two of the world's wealthiest billionaires, no less — has turned into a full-blown schoolyard crisis, tantrums and all.

Last week, SpaceX and Tesla CEO Elon Musk challenged Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg to a billionaire-versus-billionaire brawl in the octagon, a cage match of two middle-aged men, only one of whom seems to have much experience with human combat.

But now, Musk's mother Maye Musk has chimed in to decry the idea of her precious son getting bruised by the jiu-jitsu white belt (read: beginner) Zuckerberg.

"Don't encourage this match!" she tweeted at podcaster Lex Fridman last week, supplementing her tweet with two angry face emojis.

"Actually, I canceled the fight," she added. "I haven't told them yet. But I will continue to say the fight is canceled, just in case."

Australia gives Twitter legal notice to clean up online hate content

The social media platform is the source of one in three complaints sent to Australia's online safety regulator, eSafety. The number of reported online abuse on Twitter also has been climbing since Elon Musk took control of the company last October, according to eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant. [...] In addition, Musk announced a "general amnesty" in November, during which 62,000 banned or suspended users reportedly were reinstated to the platform, including 75 that had more than 1 million followers, said Inman Grant. She also pointed to the reinstatement of previously banned accounts that "emboldened extreme polarizers, peddlers of outrage and hate." These included neo-Nazis in Australia and overseas.

Before Musk bought Twitter: on multiple occasion decaled he was “free speech absolutist”. Aslo he is “against censorship that goes far beyond the law. If people want less free speech, they will ask the government to pass laws to that effect”.

Barrons: Twitter Suspends 2 Accounts Linked to Elon Musk Critic

Twitter has taken action against two accounts linked to a frequent critic of Tesla and its CEO Elon Musk.

As of Tuesday afternoon, the Twitter accounts of PlainSite, and its founder Aaron Greenspan

PlainSite is an information service that posts documents, often obtained via Freedom of Information Act, or FOIA, requests, from federal and state courts, as well as regulators.

“I do not know what I did,” Greenspan told Barron’s, acknowledging he has been a critic of Musk in the past. Greenspan, a short seller of stocks, has also been involved in litigation with Musk, who controls Twitter as its largest investor.

Twitter’s email PR contact responded with a poop emoji when asked about the suspensions.

Twitter added a Tiktok-like video feature. Trolls have found the algorithm will promote graphically violent videos and of course now Twitter is being flooded with it.

https://www.walesonline.co.uk/news/uk-news/twitter-users-complain-graphic-videos-27206651

"NBC News says it tested out the swipe up feature and found "disturbing videos that depict animal abuse, policy brutality and more"."

Musk's response?

See also this Tiktok video:

I’m getting non stop videos of dog attacks!

So Musk is so in favour of free speech except when someone is critical of him. But violent videos? Quite edgy. Thanks Elon.

gzt: Musk reveals introduction of Twitter read limits to reduce scraping. Unverified 300. Verified 6000.

"to reduce scraping" = "It's the start of a new fiscal year, and because I refuse to pay Google the money I owe them, they've turned off Twitter's cloud storage". Google's contract was set to roll over on July 1st, and now it's been cancelled due to non-payment, Elon is scrambling to get another provider so has turned off as much bandwidth as possible in the meantime.

You can choose not to pay any of your landlords rent, and you can refuse to pay severance pay to any of the workers you fired, and you then generally have many years of court action available before you actually have to cough up some money (aka the Trump business plan). Refusing to pay the company that helps you stay up on the internet however is a "saving" you should probably not try to make without having alternatives in place beforehand.
