Possibly two issues there

We have a Status Quo. If that gets changed too much you might get minor anarchy

The mix of left, right and swing voters isnt enough to force a change. Rock the status quo boat and you wont get the votes to rock the status quo boat

Even worse, vote for the people who are brave enough to propose rocking the boat and then watch them entrench the status quo anyway.

Not really sure what the options are for Kiwis in NZ when you can vote for actual change and then get... well the same, but somehow also worse.

I thought the flow-on effects from Covid would be the starting point for a reset but all we did was invent new ways to kick the can down the road even further.

At this point, realism says expecting much change at all is a bit of a pipe dream.

Is it protection of the extreme upper echelon of society, or protection against the idea of some sort of change. What would happen, if say the uber rich did "pay their fair share" and all of a sudden the Govt had an extra $1-2bio in tax revenue to spend each year. Do you think it would end there, or would they quickly run out of that money and then have to start looking further down the totem pole of wealth to the next bracket of "rich" so that they too can "pay their fair share", rinse and repeat.

We've seen what happens when a Govt becomes flush with extra money, look at the tax take increase in the last few years. With all that extra money, we should have the shiniest health and education systems in existence, but we don't.

Last few years? That period has been awash with global issues, and localised disasters

Its not about the extreme upper echelon, its about those that have a substantial advantage of PDI. You could add increments to above average, well above average, substantially above average to garner more revenue without being seen as Robin Hood. Comapny tax used to be 45% its now 28% IIRC, some wiggle room there.

But what is needed is public awareness. Where the Budget is pushed down our throats in a manor that we can easily understand. And a promise along the lines of this is our tax revenue, this is what we fund these sectors with, this is the surplus. Set that in stone to the public. If the media says we need this fixed, easy. Its x Billion we can discuss how we pay for that. Maybe we can and do. Maybe that conflicts with other such demands. But if its in the public mindset they can relate to that as a family budget is quite analagous to te Government Budget. What we have now is a lack of public awareness, all we are aware about is election promises and blame.  Probably a Utopia idea but it works at home each paycheck day

Government shouldn't do something good now because they might do something bad later.

Mate, they already take their money further down the totem pole, from the people who aren't rich enough to fund public relations campaigns on why taxing them more might be a bad idea. Source: rich enough to pay a ****-ton of income tax, not rich enough to arrange my affairs to avoid it.

Even more important to not just look the other way when they vapourise money for no real tangible benefit then, I would have thought.

Its early days for the new Govt, I'll bet money on the fact that in about 2 years time, somewhere a few pages on from now in this thread, we'll be criticising this Govt for wasted money on x project. Sadly, its what they all do.

I doubt they'll make it to 2 years before that happens. As you say, it's what they do.

Parliament TV On Demand - Parliament On Demand

Shane Jones declaring Climate Change policies bullshit (from 2 minutes).

Then giving the two-finger salute while saying "Out of the back door" at 4:25. Just plain crass.

This shouldnt be any surprise to you based on his track record. I'm not sure Winston is any better, maybe just better at hiding it. This is MMP at work, and I am not quite sure why this is in this particular thread as it has nothing to do with the PM?

He's in for a rude shock when Winston finally retires (probably feet first in a pine box). He doesn't have anything like the personality cult potential of Winston Peters.

No one wants to wish that on anyone, but you are either for NZ or you prefer the news clicks. "We are back" If NZ is anti climate change in favour of the economy then bring it on. Im sure that will help our once good international reputation..... /S   It will also help those that get a Diploma in Sandbags and Floods....

Short term gain is OUR long term pain. This needs to be managed by politicians, wow. it needs to be managed by experts, who then advise politicians. Who then assist the citizens.

Interesting to observe how much Luxon has changed from when he used to run an airline to being PM. Or maybe it's Winston running the show instead?
