Well Tracey Martin is NZ First so she is not an MP anymore. As for filling Cabinet posts I think the PM can choose whichever MP they want to be in Cabinet, obviously they won't be shoulder tapping any National or Act MPs, also there is a good chance they will not accept such a position as then they will be expected to conform to the Cabinet rules especially around keeping policy disagreements behind closed doors in the Cabinet room. They may offer something to the Green Party to keep them onside and give them cover to move to the left. They may also need them in 2023 so having a history of working together constructively would be an advantage. Although they may chose to offer them portfolios outside cabinet or give policy concessions without any formal arrangement.

Why? Greens have no power, thats end of story. They know that. Bring the  in, they will have green policies that Labour agrees with. Be green , help with that, leave running the place to someone else. So the Greens can get things done, Maori party as well. No need to any concessions or arrangements, but its still good to work forward on like minded issues

10% or so increase in voting, without crowds or chaos, democracy is not a dead end, no matter what the places run by 6.5% or less might say.
Then that other big country could also think, its painful to watch for anyone with a jot of empathy, I just peek in every now and then.
No matter how bad things get, and its not great personally, but then you see the literal man with no legs, and count my luck.

Jamie Lee Ross ,
Pity is that reform on the way parties finance themselves will be thrown out in the trash along with everything else.
Oh its not a National thing, nor NZ first one, everyone has been drinking from that trough in one way or another, bob each way kind thing and all.
NZPP associates found there is plenty of international money available for conspiracy evangelism to be aware of.
Anyway no more Government money for them thank goodness.

ACT, There was that interview with David Seymour where he mused that ACT would fade from existence as should MMP ?
Or did I hear it wrong.
It could be foreshadowing, ACT becoming the Gun, 1080 and what-else may these new MP's bring, along with more funding with the seats.
It could make for a very lively parliament ?

National, well Simon Luxton has romped in to his seat, comparatively, John Key Mk2 strategy ?.
ACT now its eating their lunch ? You were meant to share as junior partner, not pass my lunchbox back empty.
Not sure what to make of plumb National seats, where party votes went Labour, even if Nat MP won.
Todd Muller there is more to this story that may come out over time , what did he see behind the curtain ?
The Covid messaging was a bit doublespeaky, with odd unguarded dip near conspiracy, so may not have engendered trust ?
Judith Collins being naturally combative, those last words for emphasis that got her in trouble vs the John Key less is more approach.
Will they retire the old guard and bring in more reformers, to mix things up ?

Vision, how did Hannah Tamaki get as many as 838 votes in WAIARIKI ?

Maori party back, maybe ?

Anyways change is a commin.

Please remember to use full names and proper titles, where applicable, when referring to the Prime Minister and members of parliament, folks. Some members really should know better.

Rikkitic:

Labour has some talented MPs, but even with the huge victory, past experience raises the question of whether they can fill their cabinet posts with enough competent people. So why should they not look outside the Labour party for the very best Ministers, such as Tracey Martin? Is this even possible under our system? Can the PM choose anyone she wants, regardless of their (lack of) political affiliation?

I am guessing James Shaw will have a portfolio, and maybe another. They have to have an olive branch to the greens, as they will probably need them for the next election, as Labour won't be able to sustain these numbers, and wouldn't be surprised if they change leader, although the PM did say she would stay PM for the full term. National will no doubt have a new leader, last name beginning with L, and they will have a lot of new policies. Nationals policies this time were weak as, and they made simple errors with their numbers so people didn't have faith in their finance spokesperson, or the party. They were a mess and it shows by the numbers.  Temporary tax cats was just lazy. We don't want economic growth to be lead by importing people, and driving up house prices with cheap interest rates, it just creates bigger inequity. But labour also don't really have a plan.

My tax cats are not at all lazy. They spend at least half the day grooming themselves. Admittedly, they do sleep the other half (if they are not eating).

Rotorua is where they started their Church and they still have a following here.

I realise this was done because someone reportedly used the PM's first name in a disrespectul manner (I never saw the problem post), but I think this is the wrong response. Consider "I think Jacinda has done a marvellous job of handling the pandemic and set a glowing example for the rest of the world to follow" vs. "our useless so-called Prime Minister should blah blah blah". You can use any title in a disrespectful manner, and any first name in a respectful manner.

To me, saying "the Prime Minister" is actually worse since it's saying "that person down in Wellington" rather than "our Jacinda". I've even heard her referred to as "Aunty Jacinda", not in a disrespectful manner but in the sense of "Aunty Jacinda looked after us during the pandemic". That's not disrespectful, that's being used in a respecful, affectionate manner.

In terms of how politicians feel about it, some years ago at a social interaction with a well-known government minister everyone kept referring to her as "the Minister" despite her asking us to use her first name. Eventually she'd had enough and said "if you call me the Minister one more time I'll marry you to the person next to you". So we used her first name from then on.

So I think this rule is solving a problem the wrong way. It's how you use a name and/or title, not whether or not you use it.

@neb - No, it wasn't.

Oh, I thought I saw it mentioned in some other thread. In that case why the requirement? Virtually everyone, including the media, uses names like Winston rather than The Right Honourable Winston Peters, which just feels stilted. This is a (highly) informal discussion forum, not Hansard.

Let's not discuss the rule. It's how I want it. I think it's enough.

SJB:

It would be nice to see JA tell the Greens to take a hike, although I don't think she will. They give me the impression, rightly or wrongly, that they feel entitled to some ministerial positions.

Why would she? They give her cover on the left and provide some competent ministers. Shaw is well liked by the business community and has mostly been a good performer.

The only reason not to find an arrangement with the greens is if internal pressure within Labour prevents it or the Greens chose to remain outside the government.

I'm not the biggest fan of Tova O'Brien but I did enjoy the level of contempt she showed for Jamie Lee Ross in her interview today.

I was actually quite stunned that Advance NZ got almost 1% of the vote. I had no idea there were that many conspiracy theorists even out there - or is that all of their Facebook fans in total, before their page was shut down for spreading misinformation?
