gzt: The money back in your pocket is significant if you have kids in regular paid childcare.
Most everyone else not impressed by National's regular waving around $250 in crisp bills and hopefully forgets that when we get to July I think. Even so, a few extra bucks will still be welcome in July. The potential service cuts are a concern.
Only 3000 households will get the maximum "boost" while they'll have to also have to find money for childcare for under 2 year olds (20 hours free early childhood education scheme that is also scrapped under National) and also have to fund prescriptions and many other things themselves. Along with benefit changes and other changes coming in that $250 for the families who can get it will be spent in other places. Landlords will also see this as a way to charge their tenants more just like they have in the past with previous National tax cuts. Then, they with the other things that they've announced in regards to the end of fair pay agreements, bringing back the 90 day trial period, no new minimum wage increases etc just puts additional stress on workers and lastly National have not ruled out GST increases in the future.
So no, it is a bait and switch for the majority of NZ workers and an absolute kick in the nuts for those who are already struggling. The little tax cuts doesn't make up for everything else cut + Smokefree NZ being canned.

The original 20 hours of childcare remains for three year olds and over.

"everyone can get ahead.” I'm not seeing that in the comments above, however.
Also I did see a rather amusing comment about Luxon somewhere online: "why do they keep remaking Austin Powers? They got Dr Evil right though" 😄

PM’s electorate office denies threatening callers with police action | The Spinoff
To me sounds almost Trumpian.
The Spinoff spoke to a woman, who we agreed not to name, who rang Christopher Luxon’s Botany office last week to ask if she could leave a message encouraging the incoming government to back a ceasefire.
After providing her name and number, she claimed that she was told her personal details would be “passed to police for prosecution purposes”.
Her call was on the same day that Luxon’s office had been doused in red paint by activist group Tāmaki for Palestine. The woman categorically denied having any knowledge of the graffiti attack before she called, but alleged she was blamed for the incident.
“I asked for a message to please be passed to Christopher Luxon encouraging a ceasefire, and I was told ‘so you’re one of those vandal paint throwers, this is a legal matter now and you will be investigated’ then hung up on,” the woman told The Spinoff.

Yes, but you can only choose one of either Luxon, Seymour or Peters.

There is quite of mix of policies on the bonfire, some seem a bit unusual
- removing ban on live exports, I'm not for or against them, but has not having them hurt the export industry, if not, why change something that isn't broken?
- removal of first year fees free - I think it should be tweaked so that upon graduation the first year's fees are rebated against the student loan or even to go as future tax credits to offset personal tax obligations over a period, but it was a pretty good incentive to get anyone into higher education.
It would probably be a stretch to say that the re-introduction of interest deductibility and removal / tweaking of brightline test will lower rents, but it may remove some barriers to get investors back into buying rental properties, increasing supply and perhaps curbing rent increases over time
Please don't tell me some conspiracy nutter got in?
Repeal and reserve: The 5 things the Government has promised to do by Christmas | Stuff.co.nz
In a nutshell, this means Cabinet will tell officials not to agree to any policy changes suggested by the World Health Organisation (WHO) in the first instance.
This is one of the most urgent issues the new Government must address, according to the coalition deal with NZ First. While most policies have a Christmas, or “as soon as practicable” deadline, the promise to “reserve against” updates that are underway at the WHO must be done this week.
The NZ First coalition agreement stated: “By 1 December 2023 reserve against proposed amendments to WHO health regulations”.
International Health Regulations are longstanding rules and norms for managing disease outbreaks. The World Health Organisation (WHO) is currently working to refresh these rules. As it happens, New Zealand’s former director-general of health, Sir Ashley Bloomfield, is on the working group to help upgrade the pandemic protocols.

I think sending our best genetic stock overseas so they can go into competition with us is a short term profit policy.
