Oh, so he's not a free speech absolutist at all. He forbids the use of slurs against anyone! Only problem is, Musk decides which words are slurs and what gets actively enforced 🤔

Musk already made Twitter better by firing a bunch of software engineers. He can fix this current problem by firing even more of them!

Elon Musk has confirmed that he has fired over 80 per cent of the entire workforce of Twitter so far.

Content-moderators said the company sharply reduced how many employees can look into a specific account’s digital history and behavior, a practice necessary to investigate if it’s been used maliciously and take action to suspend it.

Sydney Morning Herald: Social media giants to face multimillion-dollar fines for spreading fake news

Social media giants will be hit with millions of dollars in fines if they repeatedly fail to remove disinformation and misinformation from their platforms under a major crackdown by the Albanese government.

Communications Minister Michelle Rowland will on Sunday release draft legislation to give the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) powers to hold digital platforms to account for spreading harmful fake news.
...
Under the proposed laws, the authority would be able to impose a new “code” on specific companies that repeatedly fail to combat misinformation and disinformation or an industry-wide “standard” to force digital platforms to remove harmful content.

The Guardian - Opinion - Twitter was locked in a chaotic doom loop. Now it’s on the verge of collapse.

05 July 2023

Since the ‘genius’ bought Twitter last year, he’s made a series of poor decisions – and now the platform is almost unusable ...

If Musk were a clever or brilliant thinker, as some people still believe despite all available evidence, one could assume that he has some master plan or that he’s making strategic decisions about the scope, scale, design and functionality of the service. He is not. He has not.

He is running Twitter into the ground like Donald Trump ran the US government – fueled by fits of indignation and paranoia.

Since the day he proposed taking over, Musk has demonstrated no interest or expertise in how such a service might enhance the lives of its users or at least make money to stay afloat.

He’s run it on debt – debt accrued from some of the most dangerous people in the world. ...

How long can this Twitter last? It must be a matter of months away from total collapse.

„… that he’s making strategic decisions about the scope, scale, design and functionality of the service. He is not. He has not.“

This has been my assumption from the beginning and still is, and I will not abandon it until he keeps his word. He is not brilliant, his people were, … if he leaves anything.

BBC News - Twitter threatens legal action over Threads app

breaking

Twitter is considering legal action against Meta over its fast-growing rival app Threads.

Threads, which was launched to millions on Wednesday, is similar to Twitter and has been pitched by Meta bosses as a "friendly" alternative.

Twitter's Elon Musk said "competition is fine, cheating is not" - but Meta denied claims in a legal letter that ex-Twitter staff helped create Threads.

More than 30 million people have signed up for the new app, according to Meta.

The look and feel of Threads are [very] similar to those of Twitter ...

Twitter attorney Alex Spiro sent a letter to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg on Wednesday accusing Meta of "systematic, wilful, and unlawful misappropriation of Twitter's trade secrets and other intellectual property" to create Threads.

I don't personally, see how those can be slurs.  I personally identify as simply a man and cis isn't prefix that resonates with me at all.  However, I understand that other might choose to identify as cis, which is no skin off my nose.

That said ... it's Elon's trainset. For better or worse, he can make rules as he sees fit, within the limits of the law.  People who don't like it will assumedly vote with their feet.

So, apparently he announced that "x.com" would point to twitter:

$ wget http://x.com/

Resolving x.com (x.com)... 104.18.16.213, 104.18.17.213
Connecting to x.com (x.com)|104.18.16.213|:80... connected.
HTTP request sent, awaiting response...

Location: https://.twitter.com/ [following]
--2023-07-24 12:52:33-- https://.twitter.com/
Resolving .twitter.com (.twitter.com)... failed: nodename nor servname provided, or not known.

wget: unable to resolve host address ‘.twitter.com’

So close!!!

(Note this is actually fixed now; but still funny....)

I can only assume the argument would be that those who don't believe in a difference between gender and biological sex find the term offensive as it presupposes something they don't believe in. I can certainly imagine many people not wanting to use the label for themselves but, I agree, calling it a slur is a stretch. I suppose you could argue that if someone doesn't want to be called "cis", then doing so would be misgendering them?
