Cis is just a label. All it means is someone's gender is the one they were born with. It is only used to distinguish from transgender. If you don't use it and you want to make clear that someone is not transgender, you have to use an awkward phrasing to explain it. It is like the difference between firefighter and civilian. There is no value judgement attached to it. There is nothing to object to.

I don't mind its academic and calm use.
I guess where problem comes is that certain people do think its a slur, as they yell it at others as a slur.
Shout down others with this word as though it is.
Which seems to be most common use pressently.

Censoring it is not the way.
Hopefully over time behaviour of those who bully others with it will subside.
They will move on to something else.

Comes from the latin meaning “on the same side as”

Journeyman:

Elon Musk says Twitter logo to change, birds to be gradually abandoned

Through an insider contact at Twitter I've managed to get a leaked copy of their new logo:

All discussions for or against cis being a slur become irrelevant when Mr Free Speech Absolutist decides that free speech is only okay when he says it is. Sure, it's his toy and he can do what he wants. But it also makes him a hypocrite.

The new logo for Twitter, or should I say "X", just looks ugly to me. Somehow it seems off balance and odd.

Maybe it's just me?

I have a suggestion for the new name to go with the logo. He could call it Shitter.

It was submitted by a fanboy, and who's likely not a professional graphic designer.

The thin stroke should have some overshoot, so that it appears the same size as the heavy stroke.

If it slanted a little, like an italics font, it would be more interesting.

It also looks like static, threatening and monolithic.

However it typically Musk to decide on something without getting consulting a professional. I'm sure any employee who said anything other than "it's great" would have been fired a long time ago.

I don't know it's necessarily a contradiction to say you support free speech, but will still ban people for harassment. People are capable of expressing their beliefs and opinions without needing to harass others.

The problem is who decides what constitutes harassment? Just because some feels "harassed" doesn't make it so, and simply holding a different opinion isn't harassment (regardless of how vehemently you might disagree with the expressed opinion). The same goes for what constitutes a slur; is describing someone with a technically accurate word a slur just because they don't like the word? Context and intent matter as well; the exact same word can be a complement, a harmless expression, or a slur depending on the context and intent.

Musk has made some missteps, and I don't agree with a lot of what he's done (including some quite hypocritical actions). But it seems to me most of the criticism against him is really grounded in people disagreeing with his politics, and simply cloaked in the charge of hypocriticalness. He's no more censorial or hypocritical than the former heads of Twitter.

No, he's absolutely a hypocrite. He does not claim to "support free speech", he claims to be a "free speech absolutist". To be an absolutist means to uphold free speech no matter who or what the speech is. However, that is not the case. He has:

  • banned people who post publicly available information about the location of aircraft
  • banned people who post news articles mentioning him banning the above mentioned person
  • banned people who use a latin adjective
  • banned people who called him names
  • censored speech critical of the Turkish autocracy, claiming he was legally required to when Wikipedia challenged the same demand to the Turkish supreme court, and won
  • created a revenue share program which pays a portion of advertising revenue to high profile alt-right commenters, but does not do so for high profile left commenters
  • unbanned people who literally caused an armed insurrection

These are not the actions of a free speech absolutist, they are the actions of a hypocritical, sociopathic, maniac.

In case anyone’s interested…

PJ Vogt (previously a host on the excellent but now defunct Reply All podcast) has a new podcast called Search Engine; this week’s episode “investigates the erratic behavior of the world’s wealthiest man with Hard Fork’s Casey Newton. The three top theories for why Elon Musk has begun to act strangely, including one theory that upset our understanding of reality itself.”

I have not heard this one. Can you provide a link to the explanation?

Did you read my entire post, or just get upset at the first line?

I didn't say he wasn't a hypocrite. I said he's no more of a hypocrite than most of his critics.
