US strikes commercial ship trying to breach blockade after it ignored warnings

The US military stopped a merchant vessel trying to break through its blockade of Iranian ports by firing a missile into its engine room, the US Central Command said on Saturday (Sunday NZT).

The Gambia-flagged cargo ship Lian Star ignored more than 20 warnings from US forces overnight as it tried to enter an Iranian port, the military said.

As Trump lies outrageously all day every day, situation normal, for him.

Considering that any agreement is just a figment of Trumps imagination.
Tarted up a bit by his vice president and cabinet who do not want to tell the 'Mad King'.
The enablers know its trash.

Its going better than it could go.

Empty threats as IRGC survived the most intense campaign from the air America can manage.
They probably feel pretty good.
Most of their drone cards, ballistic missile cards, underground manufacturing and workshops to make more cards, new Hormuz cards and million dollar tollgate bonus cards.

Trump rhetoric just for the MAGA audience, dumb enough to swallow and regurgitate it, as they watch RFK wrestle with snakes.

America is moving beyond Southpark-for-real.

I was about to post this mockingly, only to learn it's very close to true!

And the reality: The Russians mounted blue LED panels onto an old‑style WWII‑era searchlight in a crude attempt to confuse incoming drones, which worked as well as you'd expect.

I guess previous attempts at blaring "hardbass" music, Russian / Slavic electronic hard dance music associated with gopnik, didn't distract previous drones.

I supposed sharp sticks and slingshots are next line of defense for Russia.

Right above this article in Stuff is one showing the damage in Kuwait after an Iranian strike on the airport. Meanwhile the US is firing on Iranian ships, Netanyahu continues to bomb Lebanon regardless of Trump doing a statistically inevitable truth and telling him that he is why everyone hates Israel, and there are confirmed mine sightings in the old transit lanes where Iran said they put them.

I have to say, this "ceasefire" looks increasingly less ceasey. The last couple of days are proof that Iran retains a significant drone and ballistic missile capability. If Trump or Netanyahu finally crosses whatever line the Iranians have in mind there are still plenty of targets they can take out to make this oil crisis even worse than it currently is. The pipeline the Saudis are using to mostly bypass the Strait has at least two pumping stations, several hundred km of pipe and a terminal in the Red Sea that Iran can take out, and of course there are all the oil fields and their associated infrastructure as well. If the Houthis still have weapons left, they can close Bab al Mandab as well leaving the Suez as the only way out of the Red Sea.

Every day that passes right now brings us closer to the crunch.

Now Iran and the US are joined by the Yemeni movement known as the Houthi movement.

Iran backs the Houthis militarily and politically. For many years Houthis have attacked civilian/commercial shipping

Before 2023, Houthi maritime attacks were generally focused on military, Saudi, Emirati, or conflict-related targets in and around the Yemen war.

Beginning in November 2023, they launched a sustained campaign against commercial shipping in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, initially claiming to target vessels linked to Israel.

Now the Houthi are getting more active again.

For New Zealand, the Houthi attacks are a concern, but not because ships to New Zealand usually pass through the Red Sea. The bigger issue is the knock-on effect on global shipping networks.

As with the Strait, the Houthis don't actually need to sink a ship in order to effectively close the Bab al Mandab -- the threat alone will be enough to raise war risk insurance to levels that make it untenable.

That leaves the Suez as the only way for Saudi oil coming out of the pipeline to Yanbu. But the VLCCs cannot use the Suez, so that in turn means that smaller Suezmax ships will need to load up at Yanbu, transit the canal, and then do ship-to-ship transfers to the VLCCs in the Mediterranean for the long hauls. That will make this problem significantly worse.

The difference between the Houthis and Iran is the Houthis are hardened by years of war.

That and the Houthis have no major economic assets to lose, except smuggling routes.

The economic chokepoints the Houthis disrupt hit these countries hardest: Egypt, followed by Saudi Arabia, Israel, and global oil importers.

But as mentioned, there is a knock-on effect to increased Houthis attacks.

For completely speculative good news. Iran has some valuable infrastructure to protect. Also the Iran youth are likely very jingoistic for now, but seems at least somewhat tired of Iran's aged, restrictive and theocratic government.

But for speculative world-weary rant, throwing the the Houthis and Israel into the mix doesn't help regional peace.

And let's face it, Trump's impulsive and reckless actions, and American evangelical support of Israel (biblical prophecy) makes thing even worse.

So in a final fatalistic political shrug, if parties on all sides compromise, and keep promises, there's a chance New Zealand won't get punished by all the bad actors.

That's a terrible excuse. International law requires assistance for wrecked crew after an engagement.

There are many cases in WW2 where this assistance was provided by submariners.

For example transporting only the severely wounded would have been easily possible.

In the film Das Boot there is the scene where the submarine successfully sinks a merchant ship, but the remainder of the convoy doesn't return to pick up the survivors. The German crew are wracked with guilt because they were unable to provide assistance for the drowning crew. The difference being that the German crew had a conscience, whereas Hegseth, good Christian that he is, chose to sink the ship because it was 'more fun'.
