I didn't say he wasn't a hypocrite. I said he's no more of a hypocrite than most of his critics.

How, actually, does one measure the volume of someone's hypocrisy? Can it be weighed on a scale? Is there a hypocrisy thermometer? If two hypocrites are in a wrestling match, does one receive a handicap?

I know it's satire, but for a brief moment I did wonder if it could be true...

Doesn’t matter, and makes no difference to my point. Sure, he’s a hypocrite - but people would be just as upset with him even if he never made the “free speech absolutist” claims. People are angry at his unpopular political opinions, not his hypocrisy (despite what they might claim).

You claimed that he is no more censorial or hypocritical than the previous leadership of Twitter. The previous leadership censored far less and did not claim to be a "free speech absolutist". Not only that, they never claimed to support free speech at all, but:

  • did not ban people for posting publicly available information
  • did not ban news reporters for reporting on the bans that didn't happen
  • did not ban people for calling them names
  • only banned people for actually directly attacking other people or inciting armed insurrections

It's pretty clear that you aren't even attempting to be objective here.

Cis is just a label. All it means is someone's gender is the one they were born with. It is only used to distinguish from transgender. If you don't use it and you want to make clear that someone is not transgender, you have to use an awkward phrasing to explain it. It is like the difference between firefighter and civilian. There is no value judgement attached to it. There is nothing to object to.

The way I see language typically used is: Man or trans-man. And: Woman or trans-woman.  That seems to be reasonably distinguishing.

Language changes. Your example might have worked 20 years ago but today it can no longer be assumed what is being specified unless it is specified. Cis man and trans man are unambiguous.

But if a trans-man wants to just be called a man, aren't we supposed to respect that? That means if a cis-man wants to be called a man the same rules need to apply.

Maybe he is a bigger hypocrite then, for the sake of argument I'll concede that point. But as far as censoring goes, former Twitter management/moderators banned heaps of people for "wrong speak". They just banned the "right" people, and now everyone is upset that Musk is banning the "wrong" people. It's fine to be upset or angry about that, but don't pretend it's his hypocrisy you're mad at.

Answer honestly... would you have no problem with Musk if he'd never made the "free speech absolutist" claim, but still carried out all the same bans etc? I suspect you'd still have just as much to say about him.

The new logo for Twitter, or should I say "X", just looks ugly to me. Somehow it seems off balance and odd.

Maybe it's just me?

Holy shit, I thought that was a joke. What is that even supposed to be?

And why do you need to make this distinction? It's like saying "female engineer" 20 years ago ("gosh, a girl's tiny brain has managed to absorb enough knowledge to be an engineer, it's a miracle!" [*]), it was an odd thing to say then and pretty much unthinkable now. All of the trans folks I know (they're all MtF trans in this case so I don't know how it works the other way) are referred to as "she" or "her" and... absolutely nothing happens. Civilisation doesn't end, there's no rain of frogs, the water doesn't turn to blood, nothing.

A bunch of MAGA-hatters get bent out of shape, but I reckon that's a net benefit.

[*] A female friend of mine was nominated for some women-in-engineering award some years ago and was rather offended by it because she was an engineer, not a collection of anatomy that happened to also be an engineer on the side.

You are preaching to the converted. This is a complete non-issue to me. I was just responding to someone else's post. Apparently 'Cis' has become pejorative for some people. I don't see how that even could be used as an insult, but apparently some have found a way. As far as I am concerned, you are either male or female or both or neither. How you got that way is not really relevant.

Euronews: https://www.euronews.com/next/2023/07/25/elon-musks-twitter-rebrand-meta-and-microsoft-already-have-ip-rights-to-letter-x

Twitter is already facing a number of lawsuits following Elon Musk’s takeover of the company - and now its rebrand could see it facing even more.

The billionaire announced on Sunday that Twitter was being rebranded as X, unveiling a new logo for the social media platform, a stylised black-and-white version of the letter.

According to experts, this rebrand could be legally complicated as other tech giants such as Meta and Microsoft already have intellectual property rights to the same letter.

"There's a 100% chance that Twitter is going to get sued over this by somebody," said trademark attorney Josh Gerben, who said he counted nearly 900 active US trademark registrations that already cover the letter X in a wide range of industries.

Owners of trademarks - which protect things like brand names, logos and slogans that identify sources of goods - can sue, claiming infringement, if other branding would cause consumer confusion.
