I am genuinely shocked that anyone could believe that someone prepared to plan and execute a plan to murder 50+ innocent people, couldn't/wouldn't have obtained an MSSA illegally, or found another way to have caused mass murder.

I agree with @gzt on this one. It isn't that easy to illegally obtain a mass murder weapon in this country, unless you include cars. You need the right contacts in the right places, and I doubt this loser had many. Keyboard warriors on extremist sites don't count for much. Try to put yourself in his situation and mindset, if you can do it without vomiting, and then see if you can figure out how to obtain such a weapon.

gzt: Imo the chch attacker would have significant trouble obtaining the MSSA illegally in the new environment and it probably would not have happened. Likewise reducing the numbers available.

But yeah 'gang' use of firearms in NZ completely different issue. Don't confuse the two.

He shouldn't have got it under the previous environment either. The correct process wasn't followed. It wasn't so far that the law was deficient in his case as it was not properly executed to start with. That's not to say there wasn't a need to make changes to the law.

I am fairly confident, with no current criminal contacts, with some time, some money and some determination I could.

This didn't feel like a spur-of-the-moment decision by him.

I seriously, sincerely hope I am wrong, but I don't feel safer than I did 5 years ago, and I suspect we haven't seen our last mass murder in this country.

I recall that the police admitted in an interview at some stage that they still believe there are substantial numbers of weapons not captured in the buyback.

I don't doubt there are plenty of weapons unaccounted for, but how do you, 'with no criminal contacts', source one? You can't exactly put a wanted ad on Facebook, and extremist sites are monitored. My understanding is that the vermin was essentially a loner, with no real  connections in New Zealand. People who go into biker bars looking for hitmen usually come to grief. What better method do you have? Most criminals grow up in a criminal milieu and have criminal contacts that extend back through time and through family, friends and acquaintances. It takes a long time to gain the degree of trust needed to break into this.

I think if you want to continue this particular topic, it should get it's own thread. I have strong feelings on this matter, so it's really hard for me to not to respond because I also enjoy the discussion and find others views on it interesting, but I feel it's really quite a big topic and risks dominating the current discussion in this thread, which would probably annoy some people.

I see Brian Tamaki and co are desperate to be in the spotlight again, this time crashing the opening of a school. Spare me.

These idiots are going to be around forever. We need to find a way to tune them out. They're not interested in engaging in good faith and never were. Pretending we can win them over by appreciating whatever hardship they've chosen to land themselves in and then victimise themselves over is not something most of us have time for.

While the next election is still some ways away if the polls continue like this, I don't think 2023 is going to look too good for Labour. Having said that I suspect a lot of it is to do with the inflation rate at the moment (similar story for most incumbent governments around the world).

Semi-related note; I fully expected National to win Tauranga tonight, must also admit that I was very pleased to see Sue Grey with all her conspiracy theory nonsense didn't even garner 1000 votes! 👍 (this was even despite inviting herself to a debate, then getting kicked out. What were her policies again?? https://www.nzherald.co.nz/bay-of-plenty-times/news/tauranga-byelection-protest-fascism-claim-and-people-kicked-out-at-debate/KWPWV235FA3YKQKZHSSABJ5N2Y/ )

Man I'm glad over the last 3 years labour put such a thorough investigation into fuel company profits....

"BP New Zealand has reported a bumper $230 million after-tax profit for 2021, weeks after rival Mobil also reported a big increase in its profit for the year.

BP’s results, filed with the Companies Office, show BP’s revenues jumped 17% to $3.2 billion in the year to the end of December as oil prices rose."

"Mobil has posted a bumper profit as petrol prices hover around new highs and confusion reigns over whether motorists may be paying a price for the closure of the Marsden Point oil refinery in March.

ExxonMobil reported an after-tax profit of $183 million for the year to the end of December, turning around a $159m loss the previous year.

Its revenues for the year jumped 30% to $2.7b"

We're being fleeced but only up until to the point where focus groups think we are.

Just like the Light Rail which only exists up to the point where the fact it doesn't exist causes you a political head-ache.

At last, this is starting to get some media traction.

I agree that successive Governments haven't done enough for primary care, but it's the worst it's ever been and despite this being made very clear to all senior members of the Government during the pandemic, they have continued to deny it, point the finger elsewhere and pretend it's less of a problem than it actually is.

There is a real perception in NZ that 'doctors are rich and earn heaps' and so fair enough they should have to work ungodly hours, many of them unpaid. That perception needs to change.

I have a bridge to sell you if you believe he wasn't aware that his statements were inaccurate.

There should be more serious consequences to this in my opinion. If he genuinely wasn't made aware, then who is being held accountable for that? Who knowingly lets their boss get up on national tv and make comments and accusations like that. Why did he not seek verification before standing up and making comments of that nature?

It's like when the PM stood up on National TV and said 'we have enough flu vaccinations' 'we have plenty of protective gear for our medical personnel' when that was patently incorrect and easily disproven.

It has taken far too long for an investigation to be launched into Nanaia Mahuta's family members being appointed into government working groups.

Throughout the entirety of the National Governments term, accusations of cronyism were made at even the *slightest* hint, and yet where are those people now, howling about these things?

Even if this is above board, it's just a really bad look, and why would you put yourself in the cross hairs like this?

I don't think NZRC closed the refinery so they could make less money. So yeah, probably we'll pay more in the end.

Always disappointing to read comments in which posters think closure of MP was a Labour govt decision. Not saying you are, but I have seen that falsehood elsewhere (stuff comments , gag).

Most of the posters in this thread are just like chimpanzees on MDMA, full of feelings of bonhomie, joy, and optimism. Fred99 8/4/21

From my offline life, I can tell you that people think that disclosing a conflict of interest counts as managing it. It doesn't. That's not how risk works.
