I wish Trump was in hospital. You know, the kind of hospital where they make you wear a canvas overcoat backwards and you write letters using crayons.

If you're clicking links to the NYTimes (like this one - https://www.nytimes.com/2017/09/26/opinion/abbie-hoffman-donald-trump.html) - and getting told you're blocked until you buy a subscription, copy the link instead of clicking it, then open Google, paste the link into the search box (not the URL bar) and hit Enter.

This effectively tells NYT that it's not just Joe Blogs trying to follow the link, it's Google. And because Google is way BIGGER bananas than Joe Blogs, the link goes through wink

If it doesn't work in one browser, try another. Although I've done this many times with Firefox, tonite it's not cooperating. But I can get to the page through Google in Internet Explorer.

Trump crowned? No faux King way!

This is actually not because "Google is way BIGGER". This is called First Click Free. From the linked article:

The very first article seen by a Google News user (identifiable by referrer) doesn't require a subscription. Although this first article can be seen without subscribing, any further clicks on the article page will prompt the user to log in or subscribe to the news site.

This is our preferred solution since it can benefit both our users and our publisher partners. It allows Googlebot to fully index your content, which can improve the likelihood of users visiting your site; and it allows users to view the article of interest while also encouraging them to subscribe.

It is possible to limit the number of free articles that a Google News reader can access via First Click Free. A user coming from a host matching [*www.google.*] or [*news.google.*] must be able to see a minimum of 3 articles per day. This practice is described as "metering" the user: when the user has clicked on too many of a publisher’s articles from Google News, the meter for freely accessible articles on that site is exhausted. If your site meters access on a weekly or monthly basis, you are still responsible for showing a minimum of three articles per day to Google users. Otherwise, your site will be treated as a subscription site.

Batman:

Could someone interpret (not whether you side or not, just interpret) this article? I'm not sure what it's trying to say.

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/09/26/opinion/abbie-hoffman-donald-trump.html

The author is saying Trump is a harmless clown who offends people but can do no real harm at all to anyone. I would put the death in Charlottesville down to Trump with 95% certainty it would not have occured if Trump was not being Trump. Trump is not harmless.

He couldn't make it any more obvious: hispanic Americans don't count.

Well - he could make it more obvious of course.

But conservatives - despite whining loudly about how "PC" the world is ("What's next - they want to ban Santa Claus?!?!") - actually don't have the guts to say what they think because some of them are smart enough to realise how wrong they are - if their thoughts are subject to rational analysis.

It's much better to dog whistle.

It happens here (NZ) too.

Edit: Probable example of Trump dog whistle (OTOH Trump is quite dumb - so this may be accidental)

And then there's Zuckerberg and his reluctance to front up about how Russian funders / creators of fake news targeted users - he's admitted it happened, but not how he helped it happen.

They're (Russian Trolls) still shaping debate on issues.  An example is "Antifa" and accusations from the right that it is actually a real thing, a global coordinated controlled group of violent masked anarchist thugs targeting white folks who are exercising their right to free speech.

I don't think "Antifa" actually exists, it's a fake news creation designed to polarise public opinion by making a debate about the "rights" of fascists.  If I was "antifa" I wouldn't wear a mask to hide my face - I'd wager most of the images posted by supposed "Antifa" supporters and critics are fake, facebook accounts are fake etc.

I've never met an "Antifa" and doubt I ever will.

F$%$%king news media too lazy (or without the resources) re-publish crap they read on twitter/facebook/reddit, thereby legitimising these malicious works of fiction.

Also Puerto Rico can't cast a vote at the electoral college so him and the party won't give a damn.

http://money.cnn.com/2017/09/27/media/facebook-black-lives-matter-targeting/index.html

https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/economy/twitter-finds-hundreds-of-accounts-tied-to-russian-operatives/2017/09/28/6cf26f7e-a484-11e7-ade1-76d061d56efa_story.html?utm_term=.65bf5143e504

Some examples of how "Russia" demographically targeted social media users in the USA, and some indication of the scale of the operation(s).

It's a serious issue / threat to democracy - globally.  Cheap, effective, destructive.
