Someone asked me on Twitter why I post so much about US politics and little about NZ politics.

First US is a deeply divided country going in a downward socio spiral. Second their behaviour and actions can impact the whole world - even us here in New Zealand. Probably more than what Winston Peters can do.

Also because they currently have a megalomaniacal racist mysoginist liar authoritarian President.

And also the threat of a nuclear war sparked by a boneheaded tweet is actually quite credible. So having Trump in office is definitely the world's problem. Sadly we're relying on a broken, partisan political system to fix this. He should've been removed from office months ago.

Seems like his maniacal tweets about N K may have had some impact. They are apparently talking now.

Still very unsure why the GOP has allowed itself to become irrelevant mainly due to Trump. I suspect that unless they actually help impeach Trump they will not make power again for decades. McCain seems the only one who is making sense and he isnt going to be around for ever.

I'm not so sure that Trump is mainly responsible for the irrelevance of the GOP. They chose him as their best shot to win POTUS election they were otherwise destined to lose, and they were rewarded.

The conservative authoritarian right-wing core of modern GOP values was becoming irrelevant - Trump put it back right where they wanted it.

This Puerto Rico thing is totally what you'd expect from Trump. He's a total prick, but at least he's consistent.

It is a territory of the USA. It is not a state.

Puerto Rico is a territory.

31 states were territories before becoming states, including Alaska and Hawaii.

Puerto Ricans are US citizens, and they can freely travel to and from the US.

However they have almost no representation. Puerto Ricans cannot vote for the president, and have very, very limited representation in the legislative branch (Senate and House of Representatives)

The statehood movement in Puerto Rico aims to make Puerto Rico a state of the United States. Five referenda have been held on the topic, most recently in 2017.

2017 referendum was widely boycotted, and only had a 23% turn-out. One of the objections was the ballot used the term "colony" instead of "territory", but there were lots of other reasons too.

Those 23% who did turned out voted 97% to become a state.

Wow literally stateless citizens, right there in America, who would have known. Do they pay tax? they are slaves!

I don't think they pay federal taxes.

There's a good article on statehood proposals for Puerto Rico on Wikipedia.

While they don't vote directly they do provide delegations to the presidential primaries. The Puerto Rico delegation to the republican primary was 23 votes for Rubio. Based on Trump's past behaviour that's another reason for minimum effort on his part.

You'd have thought that for all Trump's promises to help the impoverished classes, it would be a heartland:

How can Trump make things worse?

See below ..

Trump says Rex Tillerson 'wasting his time' with North Korea negotiations

"President’s latest Twitter outburst, after Tillerson says US wants to talk to Pyongyang, threatens to undermine nation’s top diplomat at critical moment."

EDIT:

Critical response to Trump’s Twitter storm was quick to come. Ted Lieu, a Democratic member of Congress from California, said that when the president undercuts his secretary of state, “it not only embarrasses Rex Tillerson, it confuses Americans & world leaders”.

Richard Painter, a former chief ethics lawyer in the George W Bush White House, went further, warning: “If President Kennedy had acted this way during the Cuban missile crisis, we would all be dead”.

What an idiot. Thanks Donald. Now would be a good time to review the possible effects of atmospheric nuclear testing. The physicists are not too worried provided the location is carefully chosen as expected:

https://i.stuff.co.nz/world/south-pacific/97139912/nz-may-be-able-to-feel-fall-out-effects-of-hbomb-in-the-pacific

It is highly undesirable. It has potential to affect aircraft, and shipping to some extent. The lack of notification could be the biggest problem.

Unbelievable! I've met single-celled organisms with more brains than Trump has.
