Does his accountant also claim tax credits on those donations?

I don't know.  Presumably yes - if they're registered charities.

We actually know more about Trump's tax arrangements than we do about our own PM's.

He works hard for his salary and has always been a very honest person. You do seem to suffer tall poppy syndrome!

I suspect GM is only trying to get his name in lights yet again...likening himself to trump was too much for me.

Dear oh dear.... GM is raising his poppy. Can't have that now, can we?

benokobi: Apart from the cat thing he's no different fron plenty of other partie. And he's wealthy, seems most people who have more money than others is looked down on by people. So that won't help him resonate with the voters.

Maybe... he is at least talking about equality as a real issue... it seems to have slipped out of Labour's sight. We'll have to see if he can formulate realistic policies that will make a differene.

He's wealthy, but he has at least used some of it for *public* good, with his subsidisation of aid in the Pacific, bounty on rats in Wgtn, etc. What's John Key, Bob Jones, Roger Douglas, Colin Craig, the Todd family, etc done in that respect?

Bob Jones has done plenty

Isn't the position for New Zealand own version of Donald Trump / Nigel Farage already taken by Wilson Peters?

Personally, Donald, Nigel & Wilson are bad enough for their respective countries and we don't need another old fart!!!

<snip>

There is no comparison - Winston is clever, and an experienced professional politician.

Trump is a bombastic idiot, who knows nothing about politics (although he does know about rabble-rousing electioneering.)

Disclaimer - I have never voted for either of them  wink

I don't understand Gareth.  He seems so desperate for attention all the time and loves to remind people of his wealth in one way or another.  He also seems to think people care about his opinion and the media constantly entertain him for some reason.

I agree with you. You clearly don't understand Gareth.

I dont believe he is that popular.

He appeared to make a fool of himself over cats and the peoples land deal in the South island.

I don't care if a candidate is left, right or centre. It's the quality of the candidate and their policies that interest me.
I am not sure if Morgan is genuine or just on an ego trip.

I'm not at all sure it could be just an ego trip.

Something like the cat vs native wildlife thing, he was on a mission, and a good mission because whatever cat-lovers say and no matter how much they deny, cats do wreak havoc. Not just cats - the whole situation is complex, but NZ native wildlife would be better off if all cats were eliminated completely, so killing or at least eliminating cats is quite a good idea, just very unpopular.

If he'd got up and said "Hey cat lovers, please be nice to our native wildlife, have your cat neutered, and keep it inside at night" - I really deeply believe that nobody would have taken any notice of him at all.

He knew he was going to cop it personally, he knew he was right, so he did it anyway.  Telling people truths they don't want to hear actually tales some guts, and perhaps demonstrates that it wasn't an ego trip.

I care about his opinion.  He's actually a clever person.  Some people - who perhaps aren't very clever - seem to miss this vital point.  It's very disturbing to them when clever people who make a lot of money turn around and say that making a lot of money by being clever wasn't actually that hard, and perhaps isn't as important a goal for humanity (the rest of us,  presumably including you) as some would prefer us to believe,

I didn't say he wasn't a clever person.  Making money is hard.  But everything he says, some clever and some not so clever, seems to end up in the media.  And it seems as if to me he has just been attention seeking, unless of course the media is paying him or vice/versa.  This political thing just seems to be an extension of that.  Maybe he'll prove me wrong.  Maybe I'll see a big political scandal in the next 8 months to a year.

I guess we'll see.
