So Gareth Morgan is going all Bob Jonesy and starting up his own political party to contest the election next year.

Its called The Opportunity Party, or TOP party. Insert your own joke here re: op shops, cat killing or topping.

He is a man of opinions, and I'm sure he's looking forward to forming them into a coherent policy.

I'm not convinced that politics is the best hobby for bored millionaires, although he probably has a better shot than Kim Dotcom last time around.

Are you describing our current PM?! I genuinely like Gareth Morgan, I've read the Big Kahuna several times, I guess the discussion I have with my mainly white mid 30's friends is that life has been good for them with no handouts, so why should they help anyone else.

Sure it's easy if you're raised in a household with 3 meals a day, books, and a caring family and community. But I had an ex who taught at low decile primary schools where kids couldn't identify a vegetable.

But I digress. A new party might be the impetus voters need, along with making it easier to actually vote.

I doubt it'll go very far with GM as a leader.  Regardless of debate or facts, the posts above show how he's pigeon-holed himself on the "cat" debate, something people get unbelievably passionate about - far more than about income inequality etc.

That's a shame, it'll overshadow the good things he has to say.

I hope he CATalogues his policies thoroughly and not just pussy around and scratch the surface.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Any mention as to who else is involved in the party? Couldn't see any mention in a quick glance at the party's website.

This will probably be critical, given the likelihood that Morgan himself will be too divisive as a leader...

Reminds me of that fizzer attempt by Brash to re-launch his redneck "one rule for all" shtick a few months back; seems like it was primarily him and some academic who'd been pushing the same barrel for the last few years. Hopefully this gets more traction, given there's no doubt some better thinking behind the party than Brash's.

What a crock. Is this party for real or is it something to do? It will get few votes, none of them expect to get anywhere. Too much money, too much free time if you ask me. Adds no value

One of his first policy decisions, Red Peak as their logo, demonstrates impeccable judgement.

As long as Andrew Little is Labour's leader, there must be some of their votes up for grabs, plus some Green voters, a few Winston-first supporters, a handful of progressive National party voters, swinging voters, several loons - who knows, he may just be able to push close to the 5% ...

Hey - Come on - he is a smart enough guy with some good ideas (even if has has upset some daft cat owners). Whether he gets a political party off the ground will remain to be seen.

He has put quite a lot of his own personal money and effort into the Pacific - Building classrooms, setting up healthcare etc.

Also quite a bit of his own money into conservation in NZ.

He was doing a dollar for dollar match with a fund to build classrooms and provide books for children in conjuncton with UNICEF in the Solomon Islands after the one charity - I was quite proud to see how money was used.

Dis him if you like - but find out what is actually doing rather than just trash him outright.
