I was actually quite stunned that Advance NZ got almost 1% of the vote. I had no idea there were that many conspiracy theorists even out there - or is that all of their Facebook fans in total, before their page was shut down for spreading misinformation?

I'm quite happy they got 1% of the vote, you need a few tarpits for the nutcases so they don't pollute normal politics. It's like a particular technology organisation I know of that attracts a certain type of person which I think is brilliant because while they're beavering away there where everyone can ignore them they're not out causing damage in the industry in general.

Reminds me of an article I read a few days ago in which a politics lecturer was saying we may rue the day NZF was kicked out of parliament, if the hole they leave is filled by a party pushing similar buttons (eg anti immigration) but maybe more willing to follow through (unlike NZF when it came down to it).

I'm going to sort of miss Winston. He's been consistently entertaining and for all his nonsense he did care about people who have been left behind by changes in global society. He gave up the chance to be a National minister over principle.

He's clearly got a truckload of flaws but after all the grey suits from Labour and National retire I'll still remember Winston.

I hope he chooses to make a valedictory. It sounds like Ardern wants to make that happen and I'm fairly sure he'll get a knighthood. I'd love for him to turn it down and make up all sorts of wild reasons why. It'd be the most fitting end to a very memorable career.

Today's The Detail podcast is worth a listen: they talk to Barry Soper about Winston's contribution over the past few decades:

And given he'll likely be replaced as DPM by Kelvin Davis, here's hoping Ardern isn't overseas too much!

Tova owned him, and unfortunately for Jamie Lee Ross I think he deserved what he got. Hopefully now he leaves politics for good.

Although...

This Billy bloke has some serious issues. It's almost like he's channeling Trump.

"I can't believe only 20,000 people voted for us" - sounds like he's dangerously close to getting the point.

What would be interesting if that same level of questioning could be done with any/all the political leaders, National, Labour, Greens etc, actually hold them to account for answers to their questions and call them out on BS and/or waffle.

Yes, but ...

He personally preyed on tens of thousands of vulnerable targets when he jumped on the plandemic conspiracy bandwagon, including encouraging COVID denial and mass participation in unsafe public gatherings. Why? Purely as a brazen last ditch attempt at keeping himself at the public trough.

So limited empathy for him here.
