sen8or:

It would probably be a stretch to say that the re-introduction of interest deductibility and removal / tweaking of brightline test will lower rents,

Christopher Luxon, who owns only seven houses and therefore has no possible conflict of interest here, was asked point blank during one of the televised debates whether he would lower the rent for his tenants once the interest deductibility was reintroduced. He refused to answer.

In other words, no, Christopher Luxon will keep his rent the same and pocket more money.

And if the Prime Minister is doing it, it must be OK.

  • 90-day trial periods (reintroduction)
  •

Can we apply this to the new government ?

Using your same logic, do employers get to reduce wages for employees if they get a tax reduction ?

I wont be reducing my rents, but then again I dont charge markets rents anyway, they are much lower than that.

The interest deductibility is neither here nor there for me as it would make little difference anyway, and anyone mortgage free makes zero difference.

It would probably be a stretch to say that the re-introduction of interest deductibility and removal / tweaking of brightline test will lower rents, but it may remove some barriers to get investors back into buying rental properties, increasing supply and perhaps curbing rent increases over time

Nicola said it wont reduce rents

Investors getting back into buying rentals wont increase supply. unless they build. If they don't build they are competing with home buyers who want to live in the home. House prices will edge up more than what they would have.

All the social housing new builds I see are narrow 2 story units, totally unsuitable for anyone with a disability.

I have seen one with french doors that open onto a fence to the street just 1m away.

They can maximise the number of "houses" on a section and maximise profits.

No, because employees don't pay their employers for the privilege of working there.

Landlords do not pay the tenants.

However Employees (eg tenants) pay the employees (eg landlords) for the benefits of them being there.

In both cases the service (wages/rent) gets paid by someone to someone.

Labour let people drive on unsafe roads but didn't ban driving - Seymour on scrapping smokefree laws

What a STUPID argument.

But lets carry this argument on.

Pharmac does not fund all drugs and people die because of it, so can we now presume that Marijuana is about to be made legal ?

Just as I was starting to think Seymour could be an okay politician, he whips out a ridiculous whataboutism like that. Sigh.

I voted Nats because

a. I figured they would oust Labour

b. I did NOT want ACT/NZF to get into positions of power, I had hoped they got enough seats...

So now we end up with the law firm "Gutless, Dumb, and Conspiracy " in charge.

I want a 90 day right to change my vote

I am just sitting here as a progressive hating it.
But this is what the country voted for.
I don't even get pleasure of all the leopards eating face, just disappointed.

So what you asked is "If employees are going to have a tax rebate, then could employers reduce wages because employees will get the same amount as now?"

That's the same logic employers in the USA apply to people working from home - "Oh, you have less expenses now because you moved to Montana to WFH. Seeing Montana is a lot cheaper than California, we will reduce your salary because, technically you won't be worse off."

It sounds like a false equivalence fallacy to me.

sir1963: I voted Nats because

My sister voted for them and is also a public servant meaning her job is now on the line.

I don't understand some people. But also Nationals policies even before ACT and NZ First were a little out there. Always benefited the people investing in them and Landlords over the average New Zealander who get screwed over in the process by rent and tax increases.

Just take a look at who donated to them: https://elections.nz/democracy-in-nz/political-parties-in-new-zealand/donations-exceeding-20000/
