I don't subscribe to the generally militant view that anyone who would make this decision is automatically evil. It's back to my comments on thoughtlessness.
I'd like to think, that they did the right thing in the end and possibly, and hopefully learned from it, so next time they will handle it better.
People are human, they make mistakes, even bad ones sometimes, not everything has to be about horrifically punishing every mistake.
Still dumb. Anyone who even has to think about it must be living in a 14th-century convent.
