The Guardian: Judge dismisses ‘vapid’ Elon Musk lawsuit against group that cataloged racist content on X

A judge in California on Monday dismissed the tech billionaire Elon Musk’s lawsuit against the Center for Countering Digital Hate, a non-profit that has published reports chronicling the rise of racist, antisemitic and extremist content on X, formerly Twitter, since Musk’s acquisition.

The case was dismissed in accordance with the state’s anti-Slapp law, which forbids nuisance lawsuits intended to punish the exercise of free speech.

...The US district judge wrote, in the ruling. “[this] complaint is so unabashedly and vociferously about one thing that there can be no mistaking that purpose. ...This case is about punishing the defendants for their speech.”

The dismissal was not unexpected. During a hearing last month, Breyer described parts of Musk’s case as one of the “most vapid extensions of law that I’ve ever heard”. Breyer also grilled Musk’s lawyers on why the company did not file a defamation lawsuit if it felt that CCDH was making false and damaging claims in its reports.
...
Musk, who has claimed himself a “free speech absolutist”, did not immediately comment publicly on the ruling. Musk tweeted last week that the “ the Center for Countering Digital Hate is a truly evil organization that just wants to destroy the first amendment under the guise of doing good!”

Yes, the "Free Speech Absolutist" loves some censorship.

Slate: Well, at Least Elon Musk Has Realized He Accidentally Created a Badge of Shame

In 2022, when Elon Musk campaigned to buy Twitter—before he realized he would be massively overpaying and went to court to get out of the deal he himself proposed, before he admitted defeat and took over the company in a $44 billion leveraged buyout—he promised to restore “free speech” to the site.

He vowed to right the wrongs of a dual-class system that had benefited the haves at the expense of the have-nots—and he homed in on the blue check marks slapped on verified accounts as the culprit enabling this disparity.

On his first day as owner of the site, Musk tweeted, “Twitter’s current lords & peasants system for who has or doesn’t have a blue checkmark is bullshit. Power to the people! [Twitter] Blue for $8/month.”

Lords and peasants!

So, a year ago, Elon Musk took blue check marks away from anyone who refused to pay him money. This week, he started giving them back for free.

The Verge: Elon Musk’s reputation is falling — and it’s taking Tesla with it

Elon Musk’s controversial behavior in recent years is “very likely” to be a contributing factor in Tesla’s declining sales, according to corporate reputation tracking firm Caliber.

Survey data reported by Reuters found that Tesla’s “consideration score” — a metric used by Caliber to track consumer interest in brands, based on how they respond to the prompt “I would buy, or continue buying, products and services from Tesla, if given the chance” — has fallen to 31 percent from its 70 percent high in November 2021, tumbling by 8 percent alone this January. Caliber’s consideration scores for rival EV-producing manufacturers Audi, BMW, and Mercedes, meanwhile, increased slightly during the same period, reaching between 44–47 percent.

A separate study from analytics firm CivicScience tracking Musk’s approval among US consumers found that 42 percent of respondents viewed him unfavorably, compared to 34 percent when his stake in Twitter was announced in April 2022. The Tesla CEO’s conduct has been repeatedly scrutinized since that point, with mounting controversies ranging from changing operations at X — the site formerly known as Twitter — to his frequent promotion of conspiracy theories and other harmful rhetoric.

Caliber claims 83 percent of Americans it surveyed associated Tesla with Musk, with Caliber CEO Shahar Silbershatz telling Reuters that it’s “very likely that Musk himself is contributing to the reputational downfall.”

Elon is giving voice and platform to a bunch of right-wing people who support the attempted coup by ex-President Bolsonaro.

Elon is saying all around that Brazil is a dictatorship under the Justices and there's a witch hunt trying to incriminate him.

Basically, the same script Trump follows.

Australia's leader has called Elon Musk an "arrogant billionaire" in an escalating feud over X's reluctance to remove footage of a church stabbing. On Tuesday, Mr Albanese told ABC News that Mr Musk "thinks he's above the law but also above common decency".

Good luck to the AI powering the Tesla Full Self Driving (FSD) in China.

Perhaps they should try something less chaotic, like solving the three body problem.

From CSS, "Corporate Security & Advisor Services", which provide legal advise to companies in China.

CSS: Is it Safe to drive in China?
...
The Chinese approach to driving involves practices alien to those from Western societies.

For example, drivers often ignore red lights, and they also don’t yield to other drivers in the same manner those in other countries do.

And it’s not unusual for a driver to veer into oncoming traffic to pass something in their lane.

The picture caption is misleading. It's a toll point on a highway. Four lanes expand to fifty before the toll point then after the toll point merge back to four. It's likely to be a holiday traffic picture.

FSD China will be interesting that's for sure. Tesla must have the best database of real-world driving data by now. I doubt anyone can afford the computing capacity to process it yet.

Tesla has an advantage - GPU power consumption can be used for folding at home or to slow the vehicle as downhill cruise control ; )

I don't know how China, and Chinese cars, handles roadmaps.

Google Maps doesn't work in China because the government uses firewalls to block it. Basically, local authorities rely on what's called the Great Firewall of China to block connections to Google's servers.

China is building its own satellite navigation system called BeiDou, similar to US military based "Space Force" GPS system used globally.

In 2013, China’s Ministry of Transport began mandating that vehicles used for transporting “dangerous articles,” passenger buses, and heavy-duty trucks use BeiDou.

I wonder if that'll change.

The you must use BeiDou directive.
Mostly not a problem as transparent to product manufacturers and users...

China, Russian directives just makes sure chip vendors include their favorite.
EU has done the similar re their Galileo system.

It would be hard to find a 'modern' GPS chipset that does not include capability for all main systems GLONASS, BeiDou, Galileo, USA GPS.
Be it a western UBLOX or a China Quectel Chip/Module etc.
e.g. UBLOX do promote they can use up to 3 simultaneously on a current chipset.

Articles tend to use GPS term generically, vs meaning USA system only.
Everything pretty much has capability to do everything.

Except for the Military coded signals. :-)

For Apps.
Apparently Apple walled a garden inside Great Wall that meets China(CCP) security requirements.
Though may not be as detailed as outside.
Tesla has met the extra conditions after facing some restrictions.

Or local China versions of online maps and social media, which China(CCP) can naturally completely control.
https://thehelpfulpanda.com/best-map-app-for-china/

Of course if your device/car is linked to your real identity and your social credit rating.
Should it fall to where you can't use airlines or rail, maybe they might geo-lock your car too ?
Amongst other things.
