I like Adam Something's coverage (apologies if that's been posted here before, I only read the thread occasionally), he just slowly and methodically demolishes it item by item.

He also does the same for any amount of other tech-bro nonsense.

Musk has been given two huge gifts by the US government:

1. A ban on TikTok (the main competitor Elon Musk's X/twitter).
https://www.cbsnews.com/news/tiktok-ban-bill-why-is-tiktok-getting-banned-senate/

2. A 100 percent tax on Chinese-made EVs (the main competitor to Tesla).
https://www.nytimes.com/2024/05/27/business/biden-evs.html

When Americans try to lecture the world on free trade and freedom or speech, they are lying to you. They don't really care about either of those things.

I suppose its been the European view that free speech has some limits and responsibilities.
A bit like this board that is a nicer place for its moderation.

USA has free speech that pushes the limits though, has no lack of it.
Social networks have greatly expanded paid and corrosive speech as well.

China and CCP does not have an interest in our democracy or free speech, certainly none in its own.
( Yeh I know Elon Musk and Peter Thiel etc lean to idea of absolute power of money at other end )
So China ownership no matter claims on subsidiary independence or firewalling of analytics is an issue.

You don't really say 'You Shall not Pass' to CCP in China if they want data/access/anything.
So that supposed firewall between Tik Tok in Singapore and its owner in China.
Down to people who may be employed in sensitive positions with access.

Even the very powerful like Jack Ma may 'disappear', 'retire', reflect on life and reappear selectively a different person etc.

The ramping in hostility towards a democratic liberal Taiwan, and what they are doing in Hong Kong is straining goodwill too.

To be fair Tik Tok can be sold to another non China company if Bytedance chooses to.
It would still be an earner for new owners unless there is something strange with the books and valuation.
If it was a fully UK or EU, even Australian company it would not be a problem.

Yeh Elon Musk gets a boost along the way, depending who buys Tik Tok. Collateral damage.

The hype is over and it was clear from the start that Elon, like everyone else, was ultimately only cooking with plain water.

Well, that didn't age well...

I'm selling my stupid Tesla Cybertruck as prices are crashing, but Carmax refused to make an offer?

November 2023

Elon Musk, the owner of social media site X (formerly Twitter), scoffed at advertisers leaving the platform because of antisemitic posts he amplified there.

“If somebody’s going to try to blackmail me with advertising? Blackmail me with money? Go f--k yourself. Go. F--k. Yourself. Is that clear?”

Musk singled out Disney CEO Bob Iger in the audience, saying “Hi Bob!”

He also implied that his fans would boycott those advertisers in kind. “The whole world will know that those advertisers killed the company and we will document it in great detail,” Musk threatened.

He also told interviewer Andrew Ross Sorkin, “I have no problem being hated. Hate away.”

“If somebody’s going to try to blackmail me with advertising, go f--k yourself.”

This week

At Cannes, an interviewer asked Musk about the comments

"It wasn’t to advertisers as a whole. It was with respect to freedom of speech.

I think it is important to have a global free speech platform, where people from a wider range of opinions can voice their views.”

In some cases, there were advertisers who were insisting on censorship.

At the end of the day … if we have to make a choice between censorship and losing money … or free speech and losing money, we’re going to choose the second."

Anyone who ordered the November 2023 $100,000 CyberTruck "foundation series" could pay for an "off-road light bar"

But Tesla didn't mention the accessory wasn't released till 4 months later, and even then:

"The Tesla Lightbar for Cybertruck is designed only for off road use. Tesla by law cannot install the lightbar electronics and configure the vehicle for lightbar control."

In other words what you paid for was a lightbar glued to the roof, a loose power cable installed in the "A" pillar, without being connected to power. If you wanted the light to light, you had to get a someone else (not Tesla) to wire it up.

He seems to be a bit upset at Bill Gates, who is alleged to hold a short position on Tesla.

Musk is technically correct. Shorting any stock is risky. Don't do it, if you can't afford losing several times what the stock price is.

Still I'd take Bill Gates' business acumen over Musk any day.

Musk's 20 year old transgender daughter corrects the record in NBC phone interview:

NBC: In an exclusive interview, Vivian Jenna Wilson said her father’s recent statements, including that she is “not a girl,” inspired her to speak out: “I’m not just gonna let that slide.” Musk's daughter told NBC News that Musk wasn't "tricked" into allowing her to receive trans-related medical treatment.

Wilson said that, when she was a child, Musk would harass her for exhibiting feminine traits and pressure her to appear more masculine, including by pushing her to deepen her voice as early as elementary school.
