New Zealand set to cancel Jacinda Ardern’s Waitangi Day BBQ amid security concerns | New Zealand | The Guardian

Jacinda Ardern’s much-loved Waitangi Day ritual of hosting a barbecue breakfast for the public will likely be off the menu in 2023 due to security concerns, as New Zealand deals with increased threats and harassment of politicians.

Since 2018, Ardern, her family and government ministers have donned aprons and wielded tongs to cook a free barbecue for all who brave the early wake-up for a dawn service on the country’s national founding holiday, at the Waitangi Treaty Grounds in Paihia.

The Waitangi National Trust confirmed to Australian Associated Press that the barbecue is not in next year’s schedule, amid growing security concerns.

A government spokesperson said a final decision was yet to be made on the 2023 Waitangi Day barbecue, but said security concerns were weighing heavily on their minds.

New Zealand has typically had a laid-back, highly accessible approach to politics: parliament grounds are fully open to the public to visit, protest or picnic; government buildings are open to touring groups, and politicians are generally accessible and approachable.

This article in the Washington Post suggests a connection between politics and public health, at least in the USA. Apparently the more conservative a region's politics are, the shorter the average lifespan of its inhabitants. This seems to extend beyond one party being willing to spend more on health measures than the other. The article indicates it reflects a deeper and more profound truth.

I have to wonder if or how this might apply to the New Zealand context. Even with the present 'progressive' government, our health service is in a mess. But would it be even worse under a National government? What, if anything, do historical statistics say about this? Would a future conservative government lower our life expectancy?

That's a pretty long bow to draw. If you take what both major parties in NZ promised in 2017 to health and then look at the fact that Labour *halved* their amount due to having to find money to fund Winston, National would have delivered more to the health system. Vaccination rates increased under National and have dropped under Labour. This isn't a National vs Labour thing though, both our major left and right parties are very socialist parties with centralist views and to suggest if National (or a supposed conservative party) gets in at the next election that lots more people would die is nonsense.

I agree it's a long bow but I wasn't suggesting any such thing, just asking if it might have any relevance in the New Zealand context. The question isn't if National would spend more or less or vaccinate more or fewer people. If you read the article, it talks about things in a very broad social context, of which vaccination and expenditure are only parts. The mentality and things like eating habits (fast food every night, anyone?) of people who vote for conservative politicians also has a lot to do with it. Comparing life expectancy stats with different governments might be interesting.

Not New Zealand response, but seriously... Andrew Bridgen suspended as Tory MP over Covid vaccine comments - BBC News

Andrew Bridgen has been suspended as a Conservative MP for spreading misinformation about Covid vaccination.

It comes after the North West Leicestershire MP posted a tweet that compared vaccines to the Holocaust.

Tory chief whip Simon Hart said the comments had "crossed a line" and caused great offence.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak also condemned the remarks, calling the comparison "utterly unacceptable".

Mr Hart said Mr Bridgen would lose the party whip - meaning he will sit as an independent - while a formal investigation takes place.

Mr Bridgen was previously critical of policies like lockdown and vaccine passports but he praised the development of Covid vaccines, and tweeted proudly when he received his doses.

However, last autumn he began to make increasingly baseless claims including that vaccines were killing many people and that the damage was being covered up.

At first, he began highlighting some real, but rare, instances of genuine vaccine injury and misinterpreting real data to suggest these cases were more common than the research suggests.

In recent weeks, this rhetoric has increased.

Posting a link to an article on vaccines earlier, he said: "As one consultant cardiologist said to me, this is the biggest crime against humanity since the Holocaust."

Jan 6 2 years ago was an Insurrection. Bolsinaro from MF's country may have been involved in the same. Now we have a UK representative voted by the people going nuts over Covid. If this was the US we would take that as normal (and ive been there a lot its a great place with great people) but you have to ask the question, what is going on??

Humanity needs to look after humanity.

I'm on leave, wet today, watched a few David Attenborough docos. Some old and in 4:3 format, some new. THAT IS HUMANITY. We do this for our families, but some times, politically we do not do this for the citizens (who voted in the lawmakers) (In most countries)

Yet we can land a probe on an asteroid, pick up a sample and send it home, but we cannot always manage our home
