mm1352000:

Deputy PM is Winston Peters.

Kelvin Davis is deputy leader of the Labour party.

Peters made the statement I saw. The only thing I've seen/heard about Davis recently is that he owned and will (or has) handed back a semi-automatic.

Doh! A brain-fart of a day, clearly.

That said, Wilson's also not having a great time of it recently, given by his handling of the Turkish response, so we have something in common...

Egg Boy update ...

The New York Times -
‘This Egg Has United People,’ Teenager Says of Protest Against Bigotry

March 25, 2019

SYDNEY, Australia — The Australian teenager known as “Egg Boy” has spoken publicly to the media for the first time since he cracked an egg on a far-right politician’s head, becoming an international symbol against bigotry in the process.

“I understand what I did was not the right thing to do,” Will Connolly, 17, said in an interview with Channel 10, an Australian television channel expected to air on Monday evening.

“However, this egg has united people,” he said, adding that the incident has been used to raise tens of thousands of dollars for the victims of the March 15 terrorist attack in Christchurch, New Zealand.

That money is from a fund-raising page that was set up for the teenager and meant originally to help cover Mr. Connolly’s legal fees and to buy “more eggs.”

By Monday, it had raised almost 80,000 Australian dollars.

A law firm has said it would represent Mr. Connolly pro bono, allowing all funds raised through the page to be donated toward the victims of the Christchurch attacks. ...

Disgusting racist couple continues to pretend they've done nothing wrong

The Davies parted company with Ray White last week after screenshots of historic comments they apparently posted on Facebook were supplied to journalists after the Christchurch terror attacks. At the meeting tonight, Paul Davie blamed the "left".

In one post, linking to a video, Paul Davie appears to say: "How can anyone after viewing this possibly think Islam and Sharia does not and will not present a threat to any non-Muslim nation?"

Another post, apparently written by him in October, said: "Multiculturalism is and always was a doomed dogma."

Kathryn Davie, in May last year, apparently wrote "civil war is coming" and linked to an article about support for te reo policy in Wellington.

And in another post, she appeared to link to a video from Australian Senator Fraser Anning and the need to stop Muslim immigration immediately with the words: "Too right."

When Linda Greenalgh, the woman behind an online petition calling for Davie's removal from the trust, addressed the meeting, at Bricklane bar and restaurant, Davie said he felt like he was being "hung, drawn and quartered".

Consider yourselves lucky that in this country all you will suffer from is utter humiliation after being exposed for being the utter prats that you are. And apparently 2/3 of the attendees of the licensing trust meeting supported this couple. WTH.

Pretty sad that it took a tragedy to focus attention on racist morons like this.  There are plenty of them too.

Despite my general hatred of the social media / facebook model, profiting from creating heuristic bias by design - to attract attention to divisive issues (and sell advertising targeted at morons), I do get pleasure seeing (deliberately nasty) idiots hoisted by their own petards.

"she warned those present there was a risk of anonymous people trawling through their social media history to find historic posts they could use to criticise them"

ROFL.

A reminder to donate generously, if possible. Here's a page I am managing to raise funds for a family who lost their husband/father - he worked in the tech industry.

BarTender: One thing I think everyone should listen to this interview with Kathryn Ryan of Anjum Rahman on National Radio.

Thank you for the link. Very well worth listening to. It will be very interesting to see how the information Anjum shared will be reflected in the inquiry findings.

I hope the people who share this stuff install it. It's maybe a useful parental tool along with education. I assume they will add things like brand new 'dangerous and stupid youtube challenge' [redacted] as well in time.

I wonder how it knows if the name it's replacing is the name of the guy or another person unrelated to this but with the same name.

Another plug in to help increase the surface area for attacks via the web browser? No thanks. It's a nice touch from a symbolic perspective but not really an effective one.

From Facebook earlier today:

Today we’re announcing a ban on praise, support and representation of white nationalism and separatism on Facebook and Instagram, which we’ll start enforcing next week. It’s clear that these concepts are deeply linked to organized hate groups and have no place on our services.

Our policies have long prohibited hateful treatment of people based on characteristics such as race, ethnicity or religion – and that has always included white supremacy. We didn’t originally apply the same rationale to expressions of white nationalism and separatism because we were thinking about broader concepts of nationalism and separatism – things like American pride and Basque separatism, which are an important part of people’s identity.

But over the past three months our conversations with members of civil society and academics who are experts in race relations around the world have confirmed that white nationalism and separatism cannot be meaningfully separated from white supremacy and organized hate groups. Our own review of hate figures and organizations – as defined by our Dangerous Individuals & Organizations policy – further revealed the overlap between white nationalism and separatism and white supremacy. Going forward, while people will still be able to demonstrate pride in their ethnic heritage, we will not tolerate praise or support for white nationalism and separatism.

We also need to get better and faster at finding and removing hate from our platforms. Over the past few years we have improved our ability to use machine learning and artificial intelligence to find material from terrorist groups. Last fall, we started using similar tools to extend our efforts to a range of hate groups globally, including white supremacists. We’re making progress, but we know we have a lot more work to do.

Our efforts to combat hate don’t stop here. As part of today’s announcement, we’ll also start connecting people who search for terms associated with white supremacy to resources focused on helping people leave behind hate groups. People searching for these terms will be directed to Life After Hate, an organization founded by former violent extremists that provides crisis intervention, education, support groups and outreach.

Unfortunately, there will always be people who try to game our systems to spread hate. Our challenge is to stay ahead by continuing to improve our technologies, evolve our policies and work with experts who can bolster our own efforts. We are deeply committed and will share updates as this process moves forward.

Searches for terms associated with white supremacy will surface a link to Life After Hate’s Page, where people can find support in the form of education, interventions, academic research and outreach.

I have no wish to disparage this important event but I find the tone of the FAQ a little off-putting. It seems to be saying 'able-bodied only welcome'. Maybe this has to do with limitations of the site, but to me it reads like people who cannot stand or walk more than short distances are being excluded and no effort is being made to accommodate them. Are wheelchairs allowed at all? The physically disabled often encounter this kind of attitude and it feels a little off to me when efforts are being made to be more inclusive of minorities as a result of the shootings. Should not some effort also be made to include the disabled who may wish to show their support?
