And Obama and Aung San Suu Kyi will always be called Nobel Peace Prize recipients. The fact that they are totally unworthy recipients of that prize does not alter the fact.
In 8 years, Obama never needed to hire a lawyer.
'nuff said about Obama in this thread I think.
Trump's *first volley in the upcoming trade war with China hasn't gone down very well.
Threaten $50 billion worth of tariffs - **wipes out about $750 billion of market capitalisation on US share markets more or less instantly. Own goal.
*first volley might have actually been the steel/aluminium tariffs, where Trump ended up granting exceptions for everybody except China, China doesn't export much steel/aluminium to the US anyway, so the impact was probably symbolic - Trump firing blanks and cussing at the moon.
**Dowd's resignation probably didn't help much either. When your lawyer quits - even though he says he still loves you - it does risk sending the message that perhaps he thinks you're guilty as sin.

To be fair, 'market capitalisation' is only fake money money anyway, unless you decide to sell because you are panicking.

Mike Pence's family produced a children's book about his pet bunny's perspective on a day in the life of the vice-president. John Oliver immediately came up with a parody, in which the boy bunny meets another boy bunny and they get married. The Oliver book has become a best-seller while the Pence book is languishing far down the list. Pence's daughter, who wrote the book, has reacted graciously and said she wishes Oliver's version well, since the proceeds are going to charity. No comment from Mike Pence.

Well you could also argue that (fiat currency) money itself is fake, so you're measuring something fake using a fake yardstick if you want to be fully cynical.
Trump's been claiming credit for the booming market - despite the fact that it's mainly just continued on a post GFC trend.
He absolutely owns what happened on US markets yesterday - as well as further falls if they're attributed to fears over a trade war he looks like starting.
CNN - Dowd resigns as Trump's lawyer amid disagreements on strategy
Dowd, who has urged the President to cooperate with special counsel Robert Mueller's probe and resist attacking him publicly, resigned as his disagreements with Trump intensified and the President stepped up his attacks on the special counsel.
His departure raises questions about the direction of Trump's legal strategy and could signal a more aggressive posture on Trump's part.
It was not immediately clear who would take over as the President's lead personal attorney ...

yes, it is all on now, China has responded with comment and its own tariffs on the US.
It is all on now.
China's announced 15% retaliatory tariffs on a selected group of imports from the US - worth about $3 billion.
That's approx the value of US imports from China of aluminium and steel, so it's not retaliation for the latest announcement of tariffs worth $50 or 60 billion, but the steel/aluminium tariffs.
The Chinese are promising further retaliatory measures - and it seems to be fighting talk along the lines of "we will win".
I suspect they will too, Trumpland is an idiocracy - but it's still got some constitutional ties to democracy, when these Trump moves start backfiring and hurting the US, the US will back down, with or without Trump. China is a totalitarian state with considerable hold over personal freedom. Even without tariffs, they can do considerable economic harm to the US by decree with state owned production and their media backing them up. They could make it very difficult indeed, buy fleets of Airbus rather than Boeing, impose all kinds of non-tariff barriers to trade.

From Bloomberg - ANZ economists wade in:
"Although the face value of the US tariff will be small, President Trump may push other countries to take sides, resulting in a divided world. The scale of the trade war would be broadened. This is the biggest risk lying ahead."
Trump's annual $60 billion PA tariff figure isn't small - it's actually approx 10% of total US import value from China.
I did have a quick read of Trump's executive order, there's a clause "loosely worded" (ie "if possible") for the US to work within WTO guidelines.
That's somewhat reassuring, but also an indication of a coming endless sh!t-fight with a China that can and will bear economic pain just to prove a point.
NZ winemakers should get moving - China just imposed a 15% tariff on US wine imports.

Kakistocracy is a term that was first used in the 17th century; derived from a Greek word, it means, literally, government by the worst and most unscrupulous people among us.
More broadly, it can mean the most inept and cringeworthy kind of government.
The term fell into disuse over the past century or more, and most highly informed people have never heard it before (but to kids familiar with the word “kaka” it might resonate).
