fears over a trade war he looks like starting.

yes, it is all on now, China has responded with comment and its own tariffs on the US.

It is all on now.

From Bloomberg - ANZ economists wade in:

"Although the face value of the US tariff will be small, President Trump may push other countries to take sides, resulting in a divided world. The scale of the trade war would be broadened. This is the biggest risk lying ahead."

Trump's annual $60 billion PA tariff figure isn't small - it's actually approx 10% of total US import value from China.

I did have a quick read of Trump's executive order, there's a clause "loosely worded" (ie "if possible") for the US to work within WTO guidelines.

That's somewhat reassuring, but also an indication of a coming endless sh!t-fight with a China that can and will bear economic pain just to prove a point.

NZ winemakers should get moving - China just imposed a 15% tariff on US wine imports.

Funny you quote that as I was thinking that when I posted, a divided world trade wise. Safer to side with China by far. If countries get treated less fairly by the US, then so be it, the US wont look after its supporters, they are well down the list of charities

TPP without USA looks to be quite sensible.

Ah my bad - not $60 billion in tariffs, but $50 billion in trade to the US subject to say 25% tariffs = $15 billion.

Yeah - "fortuitous" the USA is out of TPP, though who'd have the USA anyway as under present leadership they're threatening to dishonour so many treaties and deals that they can't be trusted.

$1.3 trillion - I think they're the largest foreign (to US) holder of debt.  Total US debt is now over $21 trillion.

If they stop buying the debt (love that term - should be "lending the money"), then the US would need to finance it elsewhere, that would drive interest rates up and the US dollar up.  The USA isn't "going broke" - most of their debt is domestic - loaned by private citizens etc.

When the US had relatively sane government, they understood that this worked ok, keeping the dollar down against the yuan - so that keeps the price of Chinese made goods up which should work to reduce the trade deficit, but keeping interest rates down in the US, which keeps the US economy growing.

Trump is a moron.  Issues WRT Chinese trade have been there for a long time - declaring economic war on China is beyond stupid.

Am I missing something, isnt a trade deficit not the fault of in this case China? The American citizens are buying the goods, its not China's fault they are a lower price. Most of the MANY T shirts I buy on trips there are made in Honduras, so the same issue. Just because Honduras is small, doesnt make China at fault just because its much larger.

Tell Americans to reduce buying foreign. Tell Americans to manufacture more products that consumers want. Tell Americans to export more to China!  Yes, I know all three cannot happen, whose fault is that?

Here's one reason why there should be concern about Trump's appointment of Bolton as National Security Adviser:

https://www.gatestoneinstitute.org/

He's chairman of a fake news far right anti-muslim hate group.

And Americans also complain 'China is stealing our IP!' No, mostly you're giving it to them. When you supply the parts, the plans, the tools, the processes and the training to someone so that they can build you an iPhone, they can't help but learn about iPhones along the way. I mean yes, there is definitely some out and out theft, but the process of China catching up is greatly accelerated by the fact that we ask them to build everything for us.

Yes, that's right. Trump clearly doesn't understand what a trade deficit is nor how one is incurred. Less than a month ago, Trump called for the Chinese Government to supply a report on how they are going to reduce the trade deficit, spoke volumes about said understanding.

Trump also clearly does not understand that the US economy has transformed from a manufacturing based economy to one which is based primarily on services. When you add the service-based figures back into the mix, the deficit looks very different.

The good thing about John Bolton, President Trump’s new national security adviser, is that he says what he thinks.

The bad thing is what he thinks.

There are few people more likely than Mr. Bolton is to lead the country into war.

The Hill - John Bolton plans to fire dozens of White House officials

President Trump’s new national security adviser is reportedly planning major staffing changes at the National Security Council.

Sources close to the situation told Foreign Policy that John Bolton is preparing to “clean house” and remove nearly all of the political appointees brought in by his predecessor.

By hiring Bolton, many have speculated that Trump is moving to the right on foreign policy issues.
