Fred99:

I don't think Russia deliberately installed trump.  Their mission was to create division and weaken US influence, NATO, "liberal" criticism of Putin thuggery and Russian hegemony - wanting to restore the good old days of mighty USSR.

Trump's win was just a huge bonus, an idiot betrothed to Putin's pet oligarchs.

Time - Donald Trump Relied on Michael Cohen to Weather the Storm. Now The President Is On His Own

The final paragraph:

Since the night of Nov. 8, 2016, Trump’s political and philosophical opponents have been publicly and repeatedly asking, How long can this last?

Those who have concluded “not much longer” have been vexed time after time.

After all, this is a man who defied convention and criticism to achieve the highest office in the country, not to mention one who spent decades honing his abilities as a media provocateur.

Skilled as Trump has been at deploying suspense, misdirection and invective to his advantage over the last 15 months, the Trump reality show appears closer than ever to colliding with reality itself.

Oh FFS.

After so successfully rallying opposition to TPP (helped by Sanders) - to the extent that it was so universally hated and despised that Hillary had to do a policy reversal and promise to pull the US out of TPP negotiations...

Trump wants to join TPP.

No doubt US negotiators will want to restore the suspended articles.

I'm gobsmacked - how the hell can we (NZ) and other partners allow the US to join - when trump's been spending the last couple of years condemning trade agreements that the US is already in (NAFTA), attacking the WTO, threatening China? I guess it's about China's tactical retaliatory measures which threaten trump's popularity in agricultural economy based swing states etc, but I doubt we  (TPP partners) are going to be able to soak up billions of dollars worth of soya beans etc that China no longer want anyway.

CNN quote

"The plan calls on President Donald Trump's allies to cast Rosenstein as too conflicted to fairly oversee the Russia investigation."

That's fair enough, we cannot tolerate conflicts of interest............   :-)

Well, he's SOL. That's just not going to happen at this stage. If they want to join, it will be on the terms that are already agreed and signed. Even if the other 11 countries felt like reopening negotiations at this point - and that is ... unlikely ... to be the desire - nobody trusts Trump as far as they could throw him. It would be one thing to work with a respected world leader to gain mutual benefits. But this is Donald Trump.

I imagine New Zealand's position will be 'Yeah, nah.'

Citing potential conflicts of interest, Rod Rosenstein today appointed his son to oversee the investigation into Russian tampering with the 2016 US Presidential election. 'Trust me,' said Rosenstein Jr. with a smile that did not reach his eyes.

I just hope the TPP members show some balls and use this to our advantage, when someone rejects a deal then comes crawling back in a weaker position you take advantage.

Apparently a country has to be invited into the treaty. Let's see who caves in first.

FURIOUS KOCH BROTHERS SELL PAUL RYAN ON EBAY

WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report)—In a fit of pique, David and Charles Koch have unceremoniously listed House Speaker Paul Ryan for sale on the auction site eBay.

The Kochs, who reportedly had purchased Ryan for a sum estimated in the tens of millions, now seem likely to lose their entire investment.

According to Ryan’s listing on the auction site, the Kochs set a five-hundred-dollar asking price for the used congressman, a figure that, in light of the tepid bidding for him, seems optimistic.

“Granted, owning Paul Ryan doesn’t have the benefits that it’s had for David and Charles for all of these years, but the status of owning a former Speaker of the House has to be worth something,” one Koch associate said. “Certainly more than the current high bid of seventeen dollars.”

The eBay listing suggested several possible uses for the former House Speaker, including as a Halloween ornament or garden gnome.

Stormy, the firings, incoherent tweets, special election losses, Mueller closing in, crooked Pruitt, trump must be losing support in the polls...

But wait - his weekly approval rating (Gallup) is sitting at 41% - the highest I've seen it for over a year.

It's incredible.  He did state prior to the election that he'd be able to shoot someone without losing any voters.  I'll accept his claim that he meant that in jest, but it's possibly one of his rare truthful statements.

IMO this doesn't bode well for election 2020, it's possible he could win again, but in the more unlikely event (IMO) that he loses, the 40% or so of the US population who've stood by this moron are going to be outraged - there'll be division like never before.  It's going to be incredibly ugly.
