Reuters - New York attorney general wants power to bypass Trump pardons

NEW YORK (Reuters) - New York’s attorney general on Wednesday asked Governor Andrew Cuomo and state legislators to give him and other local prosecutors power to bring criminal charges against people pardoned by U.S. President Donald Trump.

In a letter, Attorney General Eric Schneiderman urged Cuomo and legislative leaders to close a loophole in New York’s double jeopardy law shielding recipients of presidential pardons from state prosecution.

A change could make it more difficult for Trump aides and others who might be pardoned to escape criminal prosecution, even if special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe into possible Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election were curbed or shut down.

The White House had no immediate comment.

Sean Hannity Will Remain Trump’s Shadow Chief of Staff

Now that he’s been named as a client of Trump fixer Michael Cohen, we know that Sean Hannity’s pro-Trump agenda is inseparable from his closeness to Cohen, at least two other Trump-connected lawyers, and Trump himself.

Fox News, betting that its viewers won’t care, has agreed with its star that no disclosure was needed. Are they right?

Thats just journalistic ethics, not something Fox News have been terribly occupied with. Would have been a bigger surprise if it made a difference.

BUT, they have gotten rid of people before for sexual "misconduct". So if (as seems likely) there is a sexual scandal that made Hannity seek the services of Cohen, and those come to light - that might end his career at Fox News real quick.

I can't stand Hannity. He is awful and as you say representative of low journalistic ethics. So where is this false news you speak of?

One very interesting thing in those memos about the PEEGATE affair :-

1.4C    The President said that "the hookers thing" is nonsense, but Putin had told him that "we have the most beautiful hookers in the world".

But I thought he had no recollection of ever talking to Putin at that stage??

Democrats sue Trump over polls conspiracy

The US Democratic Party is suing Russia, the Trump campaign and WikiLeaks for allegedly conspiring to influence the 2016 election in Donald Trump's favour.

The Democratic Party is suing the Russian government, US President Donald Trump's campaign and WikiLeaks, charging that they carried out a wide-ranging conspiracy to influence the 2016 US presidential election.

The party alleges in the federal lawsuit in Manhattan on Friday that top Trump campaign officials conspired with the Russian government and its military spy agency to hurt Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton and tilt the election to Trump by hacking Democratic Party computers.

The lawsuit alleges that Republican Trump's campaign "gleefully welcomed Russia's help" in the 2016 election and accuses it of being a "racketeering enterprise" that worked in tandem with Moscow.

"During the 2016 presidential campaign, Russia launched an all-out assault on our democracy and it found a willing and active partner in Donald Trump's campaign," said Tom Perez, chair of the Democratic National Convention. "This constituted an act of unprecedented treachery."

Defendants in the suit include three people who have been indicted as a result of Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation of Russian meddling: former campaign chairman Paul Manafort, Manafort associate Rick Gates and former campaign aide George Papadopoulos.

Also named as defendants were Donald Trump Jr, Trump associate Roger Stone and Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner.

[This news has been widely reported in the USA and elsewhere, but this Australian article gives an excellent summary]

EDIT:

The Washington Post reports that foreign nations usually have immunity from US lawsuits, but Democrats argue the rule should not apply in this case because Russia trespassed on private party servers.

Yes, but they'll hold on to the ones they've already got, and they ratified the Non Proliferation Treaty in 1985 - but pulled out of it in 2003.

Mr. Kim said his country required no further nuclear and long-range missile tests because it had already achieved a nuclear deterrent.

"Mission accomplished" (apologies for borrowing a part-true Trumpism)

No mention of their chemical and biological weapons program.  No mention that they'll suspend their uranium enrichment / plutonium reprocessing programmes, rejoin the NPT, and allow IAEA inspections.

But at least it's some progress - thanks to President Moon.  Lost in the bluster about this being something to do with Trump was the news from a couple of days ago that South/North have been negotiating an end to the 65 year old armistice - and to declare an official end to the Korean war.

TRUMP HIRES ONLY LAWYER IN U.S. WITH FEWER CLIENTS THAN MICHAEL COHEN

WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report)—The White House announced on Thursday that Donald Trump had successfully secured the services of Rudolph Giuliani, after an exhaustive search for an attorney with fewer clients than Michael D. Cohen.

“President Trump had become concerned in recent days that Mr. Cohen might be too distracted to pay full attention to his case, what with him having two other clients and all,” Sarah Huckabee Sanders, the White House press secretary, said. “So the search was on for a lawyer with zero clients, and with the hiring of Mayor Giuliani, the President believes he has hit the jackpot.”

Speaking to reporters, Giuliani agreed that, by virtue of having three fewer clients than Cohen, he was uniquely qualified to give Trump his full attention. “There is absolutely no chance of my ever putting him on hold,” Giuliani said.

While the former New York mayor’s hiring got high marks from Trump’s inner circle, it drew a bitter reaction from Chris Christie, the former governor of New Jersey, who angrily pointed out that he had not been considered for the job despite having as few clients as Giuliani. “Not only do I have absolutely no clients, I have even less going on, career-wise, than Rudy Giuliani,” Christie said. “Once again, I’ve been screwed.”

A little out of context, I know. But it desperately needs a caption...
