Minimum wage up $1.20 to $17.70 effective 1 April.

I am reserving judgement on this until I can find out how it affects the WFFTC abatements.

whats that a 8% pay rise, right up there with nurses and teachers.

Well a 7.3% which is not great and could be higher.

I'd be happy with a 7.3% pay rise.  It's about 3 x inflation.

National spying.

https://thespinoff.co.nz/politics/20-12-2018/how-the-nz-state-enabled-oppressive-and-systematic-stasi-like-surveillance/

There is a long long history of this and it certainly predates the Key Govt by many many years. Norman is disingenuous by wanting to liken this most recent use of TCIL to Watergate; if he felt that strongly, he could have brought down the Clark Government after it came to light under HC. Funny that.

http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/377237/Private-investigators-still-digging-on-West-Coast

At the time Prime Minister Helen Clark declared the spying to be "unacceptable behaviour from a state-owned enterprise" and said it should cease. SOE Minister Trevor Mallard said it went "over the limit of what we expect in New Zealand" and ordered Solid Energy to stop the practice. These orders were communicated formally to the state company's board.

As you say, a long history. National had nine years to stop it and didn't. Apparently Bridges didn't know a thing. He couldn't have been much of a minister if he didn't have any idea what was happening under the purview of his own ministry. Just like some current government ministers, I suppose.

We often seem to get links here to conservative commentators trashing government policies and practices. Here is a different perspective. Note the first part with the descriptions of issues inherited by the government. I find this illuminating because it covers some things previously cited here as examples of government failures. This gives a different take on them.

There's a minor difference between being a commentator and being a former party president.

It's also pretty lazy:

"National also operated a wide-open door immigration policy. This was probably because New Zealand is about the only country on earth that allows non-citizen immigrants with just permanent residence to vote and National saw political advantage in this policy.

Certainly, electorates like Botany that largely accommodated this human flood turn out to be safe National seats – surprise, surprise!

The resulting growth put heavy stress on New Zealand's infrastructure of schools, roads, hospitals and all the other government-funded services just at the time National brought down what it proudly called "zero budgets" and plotted tax cuts for the already well-off."

There's a lot to unpack here. Firstly, that immigration is still happening at about or the same historical levels. Secondly, those Eastern Surburbs are some of the most neglected when it comes to vital infrastructure, which in no small way is to do with the Council that Mike Lee (a Labour councillor) is part of. Wouldn't have anything to do with being a safe National seat, would it? Thirdly, Roberston has continued to insist it's right that we stick by the "zero budgets" and the BRR.

Lee spends most of his time in an article that's supposed to be about the current Govt trashing the old one for doing things the current Govt still does, while neglecting to make any meaningful criticisms of the current mob's actual mistakes. In other words, Mike Lee being Mike Lee.

Your post confuses Mike Williams a former labour president the author of your article with Mike Lee an unrelated Auckland City councilor. they are not the same person. In addition - you have incorrectly claimed that Lee is a Labour councilor. Lee is not associated with this article.

So I have! In my defense, I'm used to seeing wrong opinions from Mike Lee :P

The point still stands, however, about East Auckland; there has been development in Botany far beyond what local infrastructure could handle and has been since the 1990s. That is not something that can be solely pinned on National.

Jacinda Adern should have been honest when asked if she knew what the first and second article of the Treaty of Waitangi said. The correct response was "Not from memory" or something to that effect. It was painful watching her try and hide the fact she didn't really have a clue. I think the leaders of all parties should really have at least the English version down reasonably comfortably, especially if they are making a visit to Waitangi.

On the plus side, it was one of the least conflictory Waitangi days I can recall, politically.

She should also have been honest about unemployment rates. Interesting to see unemployment is rising in todays papers. She clearly took credit for low unemployment and indicated it was as a result of her Governments policies.

I too had a good feeling at the way Waitangi Day was celebrated this year. It is a day where alternative views could (and were) sounded without reprisal. New Zealand is a very culturally diverse Country and we should always celebrate and be proud of this. What I don't like is that it is always a lolly scramble and this years was no exception. With the massive complexities of Maori land ownership it is difficult to see how this money can be of value to the Country.

I also agree with Geoffrey Palmer in that we do need a constitution and the Treaty should be embedded in this. This would probably take a decade at least to implement, but work does need to begin.

There is, of course, always the possibility that she actually did know it, or at least the gist of it, but couldn't retrieve it from her memory when suddenly asked. That has actually happened to me, though I have the excuse of being much older. When she couldn't answer on the spot, she made a clumsy attempt to cover up.

I'm not saying this is what actually happened, but if you are inclined to give her the benefit of the doubt (yeah, right), it does offer an explanation.
