If that turns out to be the case, I would term it unfortunate and wasteful and ask if it could not have been done better, but I would not call it a debacle.

It turns out that number was around 33,000 people who got it in error. That's a debacle. Especially since they were told it would be a bad idea to rush it through, and the entire idea was ill-advised to start with.

Don't think this government's too worried about a frittered few mill here and there.  They'll get it back multi-fold when they 'standardise' GST on Kiwisaver fees.

Sometimes I use big words I don't always fully understand in an effort to make myself sound more photosynthesis.

Incredible to think that there's been serious discussion for years about changing the treatment of Kiwisaver to be taxed on exit and we go and do this instead.

"Can we tax it, yes we can"

Good, it's a debacle. Now tell me who would do any better and why you think so. You constantly bitch about this government but if there is such a better alternative, why didn't they fix anything when they had the chance?

Now, I recall recently, there was someone that was critisizing me for directing attention away from the issue and pointing at others who have apparently done the same thing. I wonder who that was?

If you want my honest answer, I think your average university student could have implemented this particular policy with more care and attention than the Labour party did. There are so many examples of policies and projects like this one, where the entire focus

is the marketing side of the policy in an effort to get 'easy' wins, that could have been implemented well and have more effect.  Labour is constantly told that these type of plans are poorly thought out, by the experts paid big money to help them, they ignore and end up blundering.

Other great examples are 1 Billion trees for example. Lofty, but the number was stupid, unachievable, and I think they have planted something like 90K trees and about 120K of saplings died without being planted.

The Minister for children said this wouldn't happen on her watch.

"No new taxes." They'll say that's still true as technically GST is not a "new" tax even though it's being charged on something it wasn't previously charged on.

Yeah, they are great like that. Reminds me of the new road taxes they introduced under the same technicality.

The thing is, most people aren't stupid, when someone says no new taxes, it's pretty clear in most people's minds it's being communicated as no increase in taxation, and them being dishonest about how they present it, won't fool too many people.

It damages their trustworthiness.

The thing is, as much as I like to keep as much as my take-home pay as I can, I am very aware that Covid has had a huge cost, and that money needs to come from somewhere. I don't like new taxation, but I understand it's sometimes necessary, and if people are honest and upfront

about it, it helps the medicine go down a little better.  For a Government that constantly pats itself on the back over it's communication, they really aren't that brilliant at it. I think the number is $21B of new taxation, that is not insignificant.

I posted at the time in the Government to take different ownership in Kiwibank at a cost of $2.1B was not a good use of Tax Payer money. They own Kiwirail for example and it's been a massive pit to throw money into, which they have continued to do despite the fact multiple reports have indicated it was not a good use of money, and the return on investment wasn't present, and that in the longer term it would be even less effective.

Rather than spend $2.1B on Kiwibank, I think it would be far better for them to spend $1B on worker productivity. This is an area NZ has struggled in for the longest time. An increase here would raise wages, naturally as a result, taxation, therefore lessening the need to try and stealth tax taxpayers.

Trustworthiness and Governement aren't usually used positively in the same sentence, irrespective of what colour branding the Govt du jour is brandishing.

The issue for Labour, is that they continually put themselves out there as being "open and transparent", but only it seems, when it suits them.

Agree on the whole. The issue is more apparent when a Government categorically states things will be a specific way, and then aren't.

I am not being argumentative here, but I am honestly unable to think of a single instance where this Government has been more open and transparent than any other on any single issue?

I'll trade them. They can have their GST on management fees, but you can deduct my kiwisaver -before- tax.

Holy cow. I was not expecting that.

They got caught with their hands in the till and they bailed the next day.
