These might seem like little things, but they are on the back of MANY other "little" and not so little things.

If they can't get the small stuff right, what is the chance they will manage another global financial crisis, or a major natural disaster properly?

Don't have the links offhand (will dig them up if anyone insists) but I recall recent items I have read indicating that GDP is as good or better than ever, that NZ has just had its high credit rating reaffirmed due to excellent fiscal performance and business confidence is at least in part a knee-jerk response to the mere fact that Labour is running things and is not based on actual indicators. As always, I think it is largely a matter of interpretation and what you want to believe.

As far as Clarke's status is concerned, does anyone actually know that incorrect information was provided? The UN is a very stodgy organisation and the American establishment is also still pretty conservative. It is quite possible that it was just assumed that the PM's partner was a spouse and the assumption was so ingrained that nobody bothered to check. It certainly could have been an error at this end, but until there is certainty about that I think it is just a leetle presumptuous to automatically presume it is so.

But, as per the NY Times article, this misrepresentation looks to be an on-going matter, and something that the PM appears to be comfortable with. It's unfortunate in the context of her recent "mistakes" (to use her own words) that have given rise to questions about whether she has misled the country over a number of issues. As they say in court - it speaks to character.

Here's something pretty positive from our Government

All kids to be tested for Dyslexia, giftedness etc.

Question is, how will they fund the programs to deal with the findings. More teachers for the dyslexic, per school, more special programs for the gifted kids (I have some knowledge of the costs related to running some of these programs).

It proposes a new "learning support co-ordinator" in each school with a more "flexible package of support" to meet every student's needs.

Let's assume they get paid at the lower end of teachers salaries of 60K, times the number of schools....That's some big numbers. This is just the first part.

Imo much of this is already provided for and the new policy will fill in some gaps schools have asked for:

linked article: The plan includes a "learning support co-ordinator" in each school. More than 80 per cent of schools already fund such roles, usually called special needs co-ordinators or "Sencos", but there is currently no central funding for them.

The new gifted thing will be interesting to see how that is defined. I can forsee some parental angst about kids getting in or dropping out of that one.

Here is one totry a spouse is ........."has lived with another person in a marriage-like relationship" That shows up in multitudes of legal definitions.

Thank you. I'm over Jacinda-bashing based on the fact that she's a woman, she's a mother, and she and her partner aren't formally "married".

Does spouse necessarily mean husband? I think of my partner as my spouse and we aren't married.

The OED lists partner mate and consort as a synonym of spouse. I quite like consort.

I'm a National supporting. This is hair splitting IMO.

There are plenty of substantial and valid criticisms of Ardern's government available.
