There are two issues issue with this approach, to my mind. First - that a "creator" is also in this case the direct benefactor. By buying his products, be it a Tesla or that overpriced flamethrower he peddled 3 or 4 years ago, you directly support his behaviour, ideological stances, etc. The second is inherent to the first - what is the desired impact of his behaviour?

As (hopefully) clearer example - take Mike Lindell, the founder of "My Pillow" and an American far-right nut case conspiracy theorist. The man uses his fortune to peddle conspiracy theories that have destabilised the US democracy and have the potential to affect the current world order. Knowing that's what the money is used for, would you feel comfortable buying a "My Pillow" product based on quality alone?

Good luck surviving in life after you go through and audit every manufacturer, artist, and anything else in between you and every product you consume, to ensure no harm is done that falls outside your standards and refusing to purchase anything from them again.

Way to miss the point. I don't need to "go through and audit" anything.

All I am saying is that I'll avoid buying products from someone who goes out of his way to scream and shout from the rooftops "I'm an a*hole!" - and Musk falls in that category at the moment.

You don't have to spend a lot of your time on it unless you want to. Example: I have never met Donald Trump but I'm pretty sure he is a monumental dick and I would never stay in one of his hotels.

I was referring specifically to the example given, which was someone I'd never heard of, who owns a company I'd never heard of and has expressed some views I've never read, purportedly relating to some conspiracy theories I may or may not be familiar with.

Credible sources is an interesting concept. Sadly, editorial neutrality in the 4th estate is all but dead and buried. In NZ context it has been dead and buried [edit: for some time].

Trump is an easy example to concur on, because I have seen footage of him being an ass. However, I'd still stay in one of his hotels. People work there and they need their jobs. Who am I to make them suffer because their employer is an ass. Again that's just my view. But it strikes me as undeserved collective accountability. Nothing is ever simple.

You are sure right about that. But not patronising a Trump hotel makes me feel better. If my example can convince everyone else to do the same, the hotel will fold just like the casino and other lost causes did, someone will buy it for a song, the former employees will have new jobs, and the world will hopefully be a better place.

A colleague of mine is an absolute, socio-uncritical Musk fan. He mainly puts this down to the rising Tesla shares, of which he owns a few and has always bugged us with when he yelped once again about not having bought more of them. Every Monday he'd come in and say his shares had already made x% gain again. I asked him if he had finally sold them? "No, why?" - "Then you haven't made a single cent profit!"

In effect we have everything to hide from someone, and no idea who someone is.

Well, I haven't seen him since the beginning of the year, as I am now an independent private citizen and don't have to listen to that anymore - certainly not that his shares are going down ;-)

If a man is diligent and always on the ball of his enterprise, it is not a reprehensible thing. But when a man permanently oversteps his personal boundaries, dances at many weddings at the same time, interferes with his CEOs and, as captain, blames the crew even before the ship has sunk by pointing to his own commitment in terms of working hours, I think that is rather questionable and not exactly ingenious. Nor do I believe that he will be the last to disembark if the ship sinks ;-)

I read a similar article this morning. It includes an allegation of sexual harassment against Musk and a further allegation bad behavior is tolerated at Tesla in general. That's new.

Well, if Musk says he's more valuable than Tesla's electric cars, he'll have a reason not to bother with the cars if they don't perform as well as he wants us to believe.

Someone will screw over the employees, because they know they are desperate and they'll all sign up to the new owner on less favourable terms.
