Jacinda Adern should have been honest when asked if she knew what the first and second article of the Treaty of Waitangi said. The correct response was "Not from memory" or something to that effect. It was painful watching her try and hide the fact she didn't really have a clue. I think the leaders of all parties should really have at least the English version down reasonably comfortably, especially if they are making a visit to Waitangi.

On the plus side, it was one of the least conflictory Waitangi days I can recall, politically.

There is, of course, always the possibility that she actually did know it, or at least the gist of it, but couldn't retrieve it from her memory when suddenly asked. That has actually happened to me, though I have the excuse of being much older. When she couldn't answer on the spot, she made a clumsy attempt to cover up.

I'm not saying this is what actually happened, but if you are inclined to give her the benefit of the doubt (yeah, right), it does offer an explanation.

To be fair it was a trap type question and shouldnt have been asked. However, her response could have been smarter from someone of her intellect.

Journalists could have fun getting a few American politicians with this one based on the US constitution

I'd imagine that if she felt inclined, she would know at least the English version of it from memory. It wouldn't have taken much for her to brush up on it, given she was at Waitangi on Waitangi Day and is the leader of the Country. If she had known the majority of it, she may well have said

"I do know it, and I am happy to recite it from my memory, but given it's coming from memory on the spot, please forgive the odd word I get wrong".

She didn't know it, I think you know she didn't know it, and instead of being honest, she tried to hide the fact. Badly.

I suspect she is largely similar to me; if you ask me what the sum or salient points are I could tell you, but if you ask me the order of the articles or which one is which, I'd bottle it.

David Farrar has rightly said this kind of journalism serves little purpose other than Gotcha! headlines and is pretty rubbish tbh. The usual suspects are clamouring for it as a lightning rod to make history compulsory at high school. Well, I did it, still doesn't stop me from not being able to individually name each article in the correct order.

Plus she's the PM and a new Mum; she'd be up at sparrows and she wouldn't be making any decision that required that level of detail without asking someone first. Who cares.

Like I said, I don't know. I'm just suggesting a possible alternative explanation. You don't tend to cut her or anyone else in the government much slack.

Heh, WAY more than you give me credit for. Certainly more than I've seen you give the opposition.

I'd rather use what little attention span I have talking about meaningful issues rather than the PM's performance on unexpected pop quiz about something of little consequence tbh.

Besides, I quite like Jacinda, mostly for the same reasons I liked Key (for what it's worth).

Matthew Hooton is hardly an impartial observer.

Don't read it then.

God forbid you risk reading something that isn't *entirely* impartial.

Just because someone is "biased" doesn't make them wrong.

I did read it. I just said he wasn't exactly an impartial observer.

Fair question. Everyone has an axe to grind, I suppose. But I am not pretending to possess any particular expertise. I am just an individual expressing a personal point of view. So is Hooton, I suppose, but some people seem to think his words carry special weight.

I’m way less interested in the PM’s ability to parrot the articles of the Treaty than I am in the content of her ‘State of the Nation’ speech this morning.
Setting forth the agenda for the next 18 months is very important and I need to have a proper look at what was said and not just what is reported in the media. Particularly with respect to tax changes and training opportunities.

I don't care (much) that she didn't know, I care she lacked the honesty to say so.

I am wondering what their plan is to address the apparent 57,000 vacancies in the building sector, whilst still cutting immigration (another flagship policy).
