SJB:

Some of them were invited and National would have sent roughly the same.

When we spend millions on a completely irrelevant flag referendum or $3 million trying to sell a government policy on water, the hundreds of thousands spent on this is a drop in the ocean.

It's not a slight on Labour, it's a slight on unnecessary spending.

We have an opera singer going! She can afford to pay for herself if she wishes to attend!

Every bit of spending is justified as a drop in the ocean...

People are still banging on about the flag referendum? Unless you seriously believe the government should have just unilaterally changed the flag without giving the public a vote, then there was always going to a postal cost for at least one referendum.

I am a fan of the Queen and her contribution to NZ, and believe a celebration of her life is appropriate, but the Flag Referendum was likely to have longer laster effects on NZ than the Queen's funeral depending on how it turned out, given it's a key part of how we identify.

Surely there are eminently qualified people to do this job who don't need to learn the basics of the right way to treat people?

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/business/nanaia-mahutas-husbands-firm-awarded-contracts-kainga-ora-now-third-government-agency-to-review-process/IPTTBUZ5DWTNMRWQ6IQCEXG6IM/

Woods said "this was an error" as Kāinga Ora has a policy that requires its employees and contractors to declare actual or perceived conflicts of interest. She said the agency has since improved guidance around these requirements.

Woods previously said that "a verbal conflict of interest was declared" when the contract was initiated, however that statement was corrected late last week with the clarification that no "formal" conflicts, written or verbal, were declared.

The Kāinga Ora review is internal and expected to be complete by late November, an agency spokesman confirmed.

So so dumb. I bet this results in nothing more than a slap with a wet bus ticket, if even that.

If this was a National MP, the left would be screaming bloody murder!

There is such a thing as critical mass, as in when a nuclear bomb explodes. Anyone who complains as much and as loudly as you do about this government, and progressive politics in general, really needs to run for political office. Either that, or take up another hobby. If you are a candidate, at least we can throw eggs at you. Anything is better than the endless litany of complaints and superior wisdom after the fact.

I find it interesting that instead of addressing the actual issue, you've chosen to attack me instead. It happens a lot.

You'll be running too? After all your endless criticism and sniping at the National Government (and conservative Governments in general), it seems the only appropriate action.

I can't run, I am sure I've made a mistake or two in my 44 years, and since political candidates aren't allowed to make or have made mistakes, it rules me out.

I'm only asking them to do what they PROMISED to do! If you have a problem with that, perhaps talk to the PM about it.

I agree. If this is to be a discussion forum then a different style of engagement would stop this becoming a one person thread.

Most of the posters in this thread are just like chimpanzees on MDMA, full of feelings of bonhomie, joy, and optimism. Fred99 8/4/21

No doubt. On the other hand Lorck has publicly acknowledged the issue and now made a public commitment to do better. Electorate MP so now it's up to the people of Tukituki at the next candidate selection or general election.

Equally, if people supporting the left were less defensive, they would be more open to considering the criticism that gets directed the Governments way.

95% of the responses don't address the criticism at all, just attack the poster.

Yea there's not much discussion to be had if the default response to any complaint about the government not even meeting the standards they set for themselves is "Get over it" then why even have a discussion forum.

There is plenty to criticise this government on, but the outraged (and sometimes superior) tone that usually accompanies this from the right is not helpful. Also not helpful is dishing up examples of government failings as a response whenever anyone criticises the right. Accordingly, most discussions here get reduced to toddler arguments along the lines of 'he hit me first'.
