Whether she lives up to it or not (and I am not venturing an opinion on that), what is wrong with expressing such a sentiment as an aspiration? I have long wished that the tone of political debate could be elevated.

What's wrong with expressing it? Nothing, I think it should be aspired to. What happens when you call for it, and then can't even manage to do it yourself? You look like a dishonest fool/hyocrite.

Jacinda is nice when it's easy to be. When she is under pressure, it shows. In my view she is a *little* bit Jekyll & Hyde. She/we has been fortunate, that in reality, the coalition hasn't had any urgent high pressure issues to deal with. I fear her coping mechanisms for dealing with major issues, aren't robust.

I think you could VERY safely venture an opinion on "nicer in politics" from the coalition, there is *plenty* of evidence to support them not adhering to it. Kelvin Davis saying Bill English had the personality of a Rock, and Coleman was the Doctor of Death.

When criticising/commenting on politicians it can sometime be difficult to maintain the balance between legitimate parody and personal denigration. I personally think we are a little too thin-skinned and precious in that regard, especially when compared to late-night comedians in America and the brilliant Spitting Images in Britain (which would never have been allowed here). To take your examples, I think describing English as a rock is witty and contains enough germ of truth to be acceptable as legitimate caricature. The doctor of death remark, on the other hand, is simply nasty and it crosses the line by a big margin.

I can't agree. Suggesting someone has the personality of a rock, even if it's a little bit based on truth is demeaning, unkind and utterly unneccessary. Is Kelvin Davis incapable of debating actual policy? (protip yes he is).

If you HONESTLY believe he was being nasty in one comment bit trying for a bit of light hearted levity in the same comment a couple of moments later, I have some land in Florida you will be really interested in.

I see yeah. I recall from several years ago that was a frequent theme of the whaleoil blog. I'm no longer a regular reader. I did enjoy it but after a while I found it lacked accuracy and it tended to start a bash process on any journo or opinion columnist not writing exactly how the whaleoil blog sees it. It always looked like a bully effort after a while. I had a scan through Soper's recent articles in the herald and it doesn't look like any kind of cheerleading going on to me. Usually the reverse:
