Cars exploding in Moscow.

In one street a whole lot of cars exploded, making fires. Also mentions attacks on other cities, and Russia having to use anti air on drones in their air space.

https://windobi.com/russia-news-major-fire-rages-through-moscow-street-after-car-explosions-world-news/

Picked above site as others had headline Moscow on fire, where as it looks like just one street.

The Guardian - Russian military killed twice as many Mariupol residents as Nazi Germany

today

Vadym Boychenko, mayor of Mariupol, said that Russian forces have killed twice as many of the city’s residents in the two months of the war as Nazi Germany did in its two years of occupation.

During World War II, the Nazis killed 10,000 civilians during the two years they occupied Mariupol.

Russians have doubled that number, Boychenko said. ... “This is one of the worst genocides of civilians in modern history.

The Western Powers are upping their game ...

The US and UK Ambassadors have moved back to Kyiv, and Nancy Pelosi visited Kyiv today:

US speaker of the house, Nancy Pelosi, has visited president Zelenskiy in Kyiv.

(presumably "bet" should read 'be")

EDIT  More than 20 embassies have now reopened in the Ukrainian capital.

So 20,000?  Unless verified I'd take that report with a dose of salt; nothing in the Times about it.

The Mayor also had this to say:

This is the new Babi Yar?That's a bit on the nose.

9,000 dead, while tragic, is incomparable to the machine gunning of 33,000 Jews in two days.

Another sign of the banana republic that twenty years of Putin's corruption have turned Russia into: Russia struggles under unprecedented wave of hacking attacks, puncturing the myth of Moscow’s unassailable cyber-superiority.

The third month of war finds Russia, not the United States, struggling under an unprecedented hacking wave that entwines government activity, political voluntarism and criminal action.

Digital assailants have plundered the country’s personal financial data, defaced websites and handed decades of government emails to anti-secrecy activists abroad. One recent survey showed more passwords and other sensitive data from Russia were dumped onto the open Web in March than information from any other country.

And another article, in case you're wondering why there are so many photos of Russian tanks with their turrets blown off floating around, it's by design:

The sight of Russian tank turrets, blown off and lying in ruin along Ukrainian roads, points to a tank design issue known as the “jack-in-the-box” flaw.

The fault is related to the way many Russian tanks hold and load ammunition. In these tanks, including the T-72, the Soviet-designed vehicle that has seen wide use in Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, shells are all placed in a ring within the turret. When an enemy shot hits the right spot, the ring of ammunition can quickly “cook off” and ignite a chain reaction, blasting the turret off the tank’s hull in a lethal blow.

What Nazi wears a green wig to be inconspicuous?

Washington Post: Alleged Russian sting operation uncovers ‘The Sims 3,’ guns, grenade

...On Twitter, the veracity of the sting operation came into question. “I genuinely believe this is a dumb FSB officer being told to get 3 SIMs,”...

SIM cards are small chips used in phones, which would be useful to would-be assassins. Pictured in video footage of the raid, by contrast, were boxed copies of content packs for the life simulation video game “The Sims 3,”...

“The Sims 3″ is a game in which players control and customize virtual avatars going about their days. Players can build houses for their Sims, dress them up, and put them in all manner of wacky situations.

Video footage also showed FSB officers thumbing through a book dedicated to the reader with the phrase “signature illegible” scrawled at the bottom in Russian, raising further concerns about the sting’s credibility....

Bad design can kill: Missile defense and user fatigue

Anders Puck Nielsen

How did Ukraine sink Russia's flagship cruiser Moskva with two missiles? The ship can defend itself, so something must have gone wrong. In this video I discuss the problem of manual work processes in missile defense, and I speculate that operator fatigue is a vulnerability in many of Russia's weapons.

The Guardian - Russia-Ukraine war: Russia plans to annex Ukraine’s Donetsk and Luhansk with ‘sham’ elections, US says

today

Press statement by Michael Carpenter, the US ambassador to the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe:

"According to the most recent reports, we believe that Russia will try to annex the ‘Donetsk People’s Republic’ and ‘Lugansk People’s Republic’ to Russia.

"The reports state that Russia plans to engineer referenda upon joining sometime in mid-May.

“This is straight out of the Kremlin’s playbook.

Carpenter said it was also possible that Russia’s leaders would try to take over other parts of Ukraine, by imposing “puppets and proxies” in local governments and forcing out democratically elected officials. ...

Israel summons Russia envoy over minister’s Hitler comments | Israel | The Guardian

Israel has summoned the Russian ambassador and demanded an apology over remarks by the Kremlin foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, that Adolf Hitler “had Jewish blood” and that the “most rabid antisemites tend to be Jews”.

The remarks were part of Lavrov’s defence of Russia’s policy of “denazification” in Ukraine, the Kremlin’s term for a sweeping purge that Ukraine says is a pretext for “mass murder.”

In an interview with Italian TV, Lavrov was asked to address how Russia could say it needed to “denazify” the country when its president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, is Jewish.

“As to [Zelenskiy’s] argument of what kind of nazification can we have if I’m Jewish, if I remember correctly, and I may be wrong, Hitler also had Jewish blood,” Lavrov said during an interview with Italian television channel Mediaset. “It doesn’t mean anything at all.”

The right-wing dictatorship of Russia justifying their aggression by saying Hitler had Jewish blood is just pure propaganda and trying to appeal to the antisemitism that still exists in that country.

So Hungary has the golden economic ticket of EU membership.
Apparently they are in the we get more money than we pay club , yay ?

They also have the golden defense ticket of NATO.

Hopefully this is not correct, but it seems Putin may have given his allies a heads up.

What is the general feel where this will end up?

IMHO this is not just another war, its drawing the line between Putin like figures and the West. Maybe not the West but anyone who isnt an autocrat and dictator who has no interest in the populous they govern. Democracy isnt the issue here, its one man governments who dont govern, they just seek personal gratification. To everyone elses cost. Gone burger.

Apparently spontaneous combustion is now a Russian thing, like the flagship that sunk itself.
Combustion seems to be happening a long way from where Ukraine could be operating.
All over the place.

There is certainly a repressed public that are getting tired of Putin's bargain of basic income and a pension.
If you claw your way up a few levels then you get a nice life government apartment.

That bargain if people are expected to die at the front ?

Putin and the autocracy of the security services may be in more danger than they realize.
You never know, this always come as a surprise.

While he can mobilize more people this also risks those people looking at other options.
As its mobilizing people and families that thought it would be 'others' sent as cannon fodder.

Unfortunately Russia does have lots of dumb artillery to pound away with, personnel may be the issue.
