What is the general feel where this will end up?

IMHO this is not just another war, its drawing the line between Putin like figures and the West. Maybe not the West but anyone who isnt an autocrat and dictator who has no interest in the populous they govern. Democracy isnt the issue here, its one man governments who dont govern, they just seek personal gratification. To everyone elses cost. Gone burger.

Even ignoring the military and humanitarian situation in Ukraine, significant chunks of the world (in particular the Middle East) are headed for massive unrest because of food and fertilizer insecurity. 2010 saw a small drop in Russian wheat production, leading to the Arab Spring and all the hardship and upheaval that entailed. Now, Russia (world's largest wheat exporter) can't export most of its wheat because no shipping company will insure ships loading from its only warm water port that can handle this - Novorossiysk.

And there's also fertilizer. With Russian natural gas (used to make nitrogen fertilizer) unavailable and an already present worldwide shortage of potash/phosphate, food production worldwide is going to plummet, with costs going through the roof for affluent countries. We're the lucky ones. Poor countries that rely on these fertilizers to make their soils productive (large chunks of Africa, India, China) may well see famine on a truly horrific scale.

Israel summons Russia envoy over minister’s Hitler comments

That's something that puzzles me about Israel, given the antisemitic nature of Putinism/Russian fascism they're one of the few significant countries not to have condemned what Russia is doing. It seems like pretty much a no-brainer, but they haven't taken a position on the issue.

Is Israel a state without morals? After all, this was one of the few countries that militarily assisted South Africa during the isolation of the apartheid era:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Israel%E2%80%93South_Africa_Agreement

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Africa_and_weapons_of_mass_destruction#Collaboration_with_Israel

Or a quote from former Israeli Foreign Minister, Shlomo Ben-Ami - "Israelis tend to see all their wars as ‘existential’ and ethical considerations as luxuries they cannot afford. But there are times when morality and realpolitik align..."

Obviously, now is not one of those times.

Ukraine war: Putin tells Macron West should stop sending arms - BBC News

Russian President Vladimir Putin has said the West could help end the war in Ukraine by putting more pressure on President Volodymyr Zelensky and halting arms deliveries to his forces.

Mr Putin was speaking in his first telephone talks in more than a month with French President Emmanuel Macron.

The French leader again called for a ceasefire and for talks to end the war brought on by Russia's invasion.

He asked Mr Putin to allow further evacuations in the city of Mariupol.

The city has seen some of the bitterest fighting of the war and hundreds of civilians are believed to remain trapped under the rubble of a steelworks held by Ukrainian forces.

Here's an idea: tell Putin to stop being a dick and stop the war he started.

Putin hasn't started the war yet.

My guess is that the "special operation" will be declared a "war" in Moscow on 09 May (Victory Day)*.

This will facilitate conscription and make Putin feel more manly.   😐

At this point he's literally just trolling. But it is surely for the domestic audience - nobody outside Russia is fooled, nor does anyone really think it's funny.

Don't forget that notorious Swedish Nazi Raoul Wallenberg. Whatever happened to him? Oh, right. He died at the hands of the KGB for rescuing 'thousands' of Jews.

The seizure of Russian super-yachts is a small percentage of the Russian retaliatory seizure leased airliners.

Very dumb of Russia, as even the Chinese, Turks, Indians will think twice about leasing anything of value to them for decades.

No one in this ships survived these hits. At least it was painless.

Ukrainian drone destroys two Russian patrol ships, says defense ministry

CNN

Two Russian Raptor patrol boats were destroyed near Snake Island by a Ukrainian Bayraktar drone, the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense reported, citing the head of the Armed Forces General. Video of the drone targeting one of the Raptor patrol boats near the island in the Black Sea was included in the MOD post. Moscow is yet to confirm or react to the claim.

This YouTube video's a bit gory, 18+. It's Ukrainian drones dropping grenades on Russian troops scavenging.

These are low-yield grenades, but obviously when one goes off a meter away, it's bad.

I won't link here, but you can search Youtube for LBGu6qdzbMc

Forbes: New Report Highlights Devastating Impact Of War In Ukraine On Women

...The Rapid Gender Analysis, put together by UN Women, the United Nations entity dedicated to global gender equality, and CARE International, a humanitarian agency focused on ending global poverty for women and girls, was released today. The report draws on surveys and interviews conducted last month in 19 regions in Ukraine.

While difficult to measure in the midst of a situation that remains highly volatile, the report draws on the best available metrics in order to illustrate the magnitude of the growing crisis.

The latest estimates out of the UN put the number of Ukrainian refugees at 5.6 million and the number of displaced people at 7.7 million—figures that continue to climb.

Due to the fact that most men aged 18–60 are required to stay behind under martial law, it's estimated that 90% of those fleeing the country and 60% of those displaced are women.
