International Committee of the Red Cross: Misinformation about "International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC)" activities for people affected by conflict in Ukraine

Evacuations of civilians

...We have never taken part in any alleged forced evacuations of civilians into Russia from Mariupol or any other Ukrainian city.

Camps in Russia

...The ICRC does not participate in the alleged "filtering" of Ukrainians into Russia.

...To be clear – we are not managing any refugee or transit camps in Russia. We are only supporting the Russian Red
Cross to respond to the humanitarian needs of people who have arrived in Russia.
...
High-level meetings in Ukraine and Russia

Our President met with authorities in Russia in March. He also met with authorities in Ukraine the week beforehand.
...
Safe passage for Mariupol

We have made detailed proposals regarding safe passages for civilians to ease the massive suffering.

We hope to facilitate a safe passage out of Mariupol as soon as possible, provided all parties agree to the exact terms, including the route, the start time, and the duration. Time is running out for those trapped in the city. They've gone for weeks with no aid.

We have never refused a request to set up a safe passage from Mariupol.

The Washington Post - Don’t be ‘Putin’s altar boy,’ Pope warns Russian Orthodox leader

today

Pope Francis warned the leader of the Russian Orthodox Church not to be “Putin’s altar boy” and justify the Russian president’s invasion of Ukraine.

In a Tuesday interview with the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, Francis said he spoke with Patriarch Kirill, a key supporter of Vladimir Putin and his war, for 40 minutes over Zoom.

During the March 16 conversation, Francis said, Kirill was listing off all the justifications for the war from a sheet of paper he was holding. ...

I'm an atheist, but I this is the first Pope I've liked. I obviously disagree with him on a number of points, but overall the best one ever.

Along my atheist views, he once wrote this:

"The Lord has redeemed all of us, all of us, with the Blood of Christ: all of us, not just Catholics. Everyone! 'Father, the atheists?' Even the atheists. Everyone! And this Blood makes us children of God of the first class. We are created children in the likeness of God and the Blood of Christ has redeemed us all. And we all have a duty to do good. And this commandment for everyone to do good, I think, is a beautiful path towards peace. If we, each doing our own part, if we do good to others, if we meet there, doing good, and we go slowly, gently, little by little, we will make that culture of encounter: We need that so much. We must meet one another doing good. 'But I don't believe, Father, I am an atheist!' But do good: We will meet one another there."

In lighter news, what big-brain thought Lada was a good investment?

Autocar.co.nz: Renault set to sell Lada for bugger all

Renault is offloading Russian carmaker Lada for a meagre half-a-cent as the Russia/Ukraine war rages on.

Renault owns a 68 per cent stake in Lada, a prominent manufacturer in Russia. However, the war between the two neighbours has had dire consequences on Renault, both from a market perspective and supply-wise.

Thus, Renault is reportedly set to sell off its stake in Lada for the price of one Russian Ruble, or $0.022 New Zealand dollars.

Wikipedia says there was only 3-4 of these in the Black sea, one was lost in March so there may only be one left now.

Bet that crew will be a bit nervous.

There are inland waterways (canals & navigable rivers) that small Russian Navy ships like these - they're "boats" really - can use to get to the Black Sea from the western parts of Russia. The Russians can bring just about all their Raptor class ships to the Black Sea if they want to throw them away.
What has been shown is that they're very, very vulnerable unless the Russian Air Force has established Air Dominance

A Russian translated article. No mention of the the Lada car company was sold for one ruble selling price

VAZ is a Russian automobile manufacturing company

You got to love the spin-job:)

Kommersant from Russia: VAZ will retain its share in the Russian market under the conditions of state support

...VAZ will resume car production after the end of the May holidays. They would not confirm the rumors about the suspension of the production of cars until May 13. In April, the car plant went on a three-week corporate vacation, after which production in Togliatti and Izhevsk was resumed "on a limited basis" in the face of a shortage of components.

Starting June 6, VAZ will switch to a four-day working week due to a shortage of parts. The company promised to launch the production of cars with a minimum of imported parts in the near future. They will receive support from the federal budget.

It was reported that Renault may sell its 67.6% stake in VAZ to the government....

In recent years, the company has consistently occupied a fifth of the domestic market, a high demand for its products was noted in a number of neighboring countries, primarily in Kazakhstan and Belarus...

Problems with the supply of components began this spring due to sanctions imposed in response to the Russian military special operation in Ukraine. Lada sales in March decreased by 64% compared to the same period in 2021. This is comparable to the overall decline in car sales in the Russian market (63%).

Industrial expert, candidate of economic sciences Leonid Khazanov predicts that Lada will remain the most popular car line in Russia. “Oddly enough, the departure of Western brands will contribute to this to a large extent. In such conditions, motorists will have only two options to choose from: either do without a car at all, or buy domestic brands, including Lada. Fans of luxury cars will suffer, while ordinary citizens can easily buy Lada. The departure of foreign competitors clears the market for VAZ. They are constrained by the lack of semiconductors and other components imported from abroad. If their shortage could be quickly eliminated, while at the same time sharply reducing car prices, Western auto companies would definitely not be able to return to Russia.

According to Mr. Khazanov, in the current conditions it is very profitable to produce cars in Russia "due to the low cost of personnel salaries, which are significantly less to similar costs in the USA, Europe, Japan and even China." The expert also recalled the existence of powerful instruments of state support for the automotive industry.

Yury Fedyaev, General Director of Classic Investments, recalled that the lack of 100% localization in the production of cars is a global trend. “Today, there are no completely localized models in the VAZ lineup ... Obviously, in the foreseeable future, Renault's exit will cause problems with the supply of imported components. VAZ, no doubt, will be able to replace to assemble cars independent without imported parts. Now we are fighting to maintain employment, and not about competing for consumers”...

NPR: A Russian naval base is defended by dolphins. It's not as unusual as it sounds

Russia's military is using specially trained dolphins to defend a critical naval base off Crimea, according to an analysis published by U.S. Naval Institute News.

Submarine analyst H I Sutton wrote this week for the online news and analysis outlet — which is editorially independent from the nonprofit USNI — that satellite imagery from Maxar Technologies shows two dolphin pens at the entrance to Sevastopol's harbor, the Russian navy's "most significant" naval base in the Black Sea. He said the pens were moved there in February, around the time that Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

...Andrew Lambert, a professor of naval history at King's College London, told NPR that he isn't surprised by the use of defense dolphins in the conflict, since they were in Sevastopol's harbor "long before it started."

Indeed, the Soviet navy ran several marine-mammal programs during the Cold War, including training dolphins near Sevastopol. That particular unit transitioned to the Ukrainian military when the Soviet Union collapsed, Sutton explained, but "barely stayed open," despite attempts to remain operational. Russia took control of the unit after it annexed Crimea in 2014, and it expanded the program once again.

The degree of systematic viciousness, cruelty, and depravity is difficult to understand

https://www.theguardian.com/global-development/2022/may/06/ukraine-photos-poland-border-refugees-rape-atrocities

""
One of the photos she showed me was the hanging body of a young girl. She couldn’t have been more than 14. She said her grandson told her he was walking through the woods looking for dead bodies left by the Russians and lifted his head and saw these girls strung from the trees, all of them very young.
""

Deeper than the bombardment of everything, beyond anything with military significance, pointless targets, unless civilians are the targets.
The continuing efforts to trap civilians so they cannot leave, and independent humanitarian agencies denied access.
Syrians called it put out a red cross sign, designate a building as a hospital, a refuge for children and it makes it a target.

We are not talking about isolated incidents , someone goes nuts, but incidents on an industrial scale.
Systematic as part of their invasion.

The unit in Butcha was given award of a Guards Unit by Putin for what they did.

The Guardian - Russia-Ukraine war

breaking

A senior official from the Russian parliament said Friday that Russia will remain in southern Ukraine “forever”, speaking on a visit to the Moscow-controlled city of Kherson, AFP reports.

Russia is here forever. There should be no doubt about this. There will be no return to the past,” Andrey Turchak said, according to a statement from the ruling United Russia party.

We will live together, develop this rich region, rich in historical heritage, rich in the people who live here,” Turchak added.

[This] is the first time that a senior Russian official has indicated Moscow’s intentions to remain present on Ukrainian territory.

Should that happen and it probably will, re draw the borders and UKR gets a fast entry to NATO. And the then disenfranchised citizens get supported to move to Ukraine.
