I have been out of touch all day and only just heard about this atrocity. This outrage makes me feel ashamed to be white and I can only offer heartfelt apologies to my Muslim neighbours. From the bottom of my heart, I am truly sorry.

I don't think this is the time to argue about matters of principle. I am against censorship but if that is deemed necessary by the proper authorities to stop this evil in its tracks, then so be it.

The commentary coming out of the rest of the world (mainly western countries) is absolutely disgusting! This guy is being called a hero and a martyr. Today’s tragedy is being hailed as a victory for white supremacy, I’m actually feeling so sick that a pocket of people can be so callous and unsympathetic for the innocent victims killed in cold blood.

I really hope our country will stand up as one nation after today and show unity and love as this isn’t a terror attack against the Muslim community, this was an attack against New Zealand and her people.

I personally would not mind a number of the sites that have been blocked to remain blocked.
They are cesspools of right wing extremists so why should we tolerate them.

The video is the one piece of factual evidence that is available about the whole event - everything else is not - and there most likely won't be much until an investigation is finished. If someone wishes to view it then it should be their choice regardless of the content - no one is being forced to view it.

If you think it is someone's right to watch people murdered we have significantly different values. For me it is the same as watching child pornography.

It's sad to see us take just pages to be bickering at each other when what we need is care, compassion and *tolerance* right now.

There will be plenty of time to disect things, critisize, and share theories.

I feel right now the focus should be the members of our community who are affected and ensuring they have whatever they need to get through this as best they can.

Perhaps the discussions on motives and the associated topics should be in a different thread or saved till a later time. Very little is known conclusively and jumping to conclusions is likely to only spread negativity.

Let's try and give each other the benefit of the doubt. It's understandble people are jumpy considering these terrible acts.

It's time to show the best of ourselves.

What an astoundingly unempathetic post. If you really think totally black and white concepts apply during a crisis then you are living in a parallel dimension.

Everyone is taking the best action they can at this time, based on the information available. It might be right or wrong but I have no doubt of their best intentions and as has been stated it's a temporary measure.

I'm sure the ghouls who are desperate to find footage will manage but I'm pretty comfortable with Spark, Vodafone et al doing this for a few hours/days.

It's still wrong. Censoring the internet is what tin pot dictators do. The best action (that could be taken) is to leave things alone.

Who decides what, when, and for how long to censor? Under what authority? To whom are they answerable? What are the penalities, if any, for circumventing, or attempting the circumvent the censorship?

Which other services should be shut down? Land lines? Cell towers? Calls and SMS, or just one of them? What about radios?

I'm not saying that today's events are not terrible. They are. And it's a crisis for some, but not for me, and I suspect (since you are posting on Geekzone), neither for you.

Since I have plenty of time in my comfortable lounge to consider what a proportionate response might be then I'll post about it. I'm pretty sure there are people in authority who also have time to carefully consider what should be done. They've probably already thought of it and drafted a protocol, which can now be executed. Knee-jerk reactionary responses should be discouraged.
