Forbes: A Journalist Just Spotted Russia’s ‘Admiral Makarov’ Frigate, Intact And At Sea

H.I. Sutton, an independent journalist focusing on naval warfare, has spotted more than a dozen of the Russian Black Sea Fleet’s remaining warships, intact and underway.

...It’s worth noting the Admiral Makarov is sailing close to home, near Snake Island, the current locus of naval combat between Ukraine and Russia. The Russian ships enjoy the protection of shore-based S-400 surface-to-air missile batteries and the Russian navy’s Su-30 fighter jets.

Closer to Snake Island—which sits astride the main shipping route to Ukraine’s strategic port Odessa, 80 miles to the north—ships are at greater risk of coming under attack from Ukrainian TB-2 armed drones and whatever Neptune anti-ship missiles Ukraine has left.

Anti-War Activists Stage ‘Guerrilla’ Protests on Victory Day
https://www.themoscowtimes.com/2022/05/09/anti-war-activists-stage-guerrilla-protests-on-victory-day-a77625

""
A series of anti-war articles appeared on pro-Kremlin news website Lenta.ru on Monday morning, including one with the headline “Vladimir Putin has became a pathetic dictator and paranoic”.
""
A few hours before the homepage of Lenta.ru was altered, satellite TV users noticed that the listings for 9 May had been changed to read “the blood of thousands of Ukrainians and hundreds of their murdered children are on your hands”.

I'm guessing that's an American who created the target shooting poster / gun target poster.

As much as I dislike Putin, encouraging Americans to shoot anyone is not a good idea.

I'm having trouble finding the incident, but decades ago a group of civilians, non-government affiliated idiots, loaded up a small boat full of guns, with the intent of going to Cuba and assassinating Castro.

The CIA shut them down. (I know it's ironic)

Putin's not popular in Poland.

USA Today: Protesters splatter Russian ambassador to Poland with red paint at memorial

Russia's ambassador to Poland was splattered with red paint thrown at him by protesters opposed to the war in Ukraine, preventing him from paying respects on Monday at a Warsaw cemetery to Red Army soldiers who died during World War II.

Poland's not a good place for rape victims.

The Guardian: Ukrainian women face harsh reality of Poland’s abortion laws

...As evidence and reports of rape and sexual assault of Ukrainian citizens continue to emerge, activists and politicians in Poland are also becoming increasingly concerned about how rape victims seeking safety in Poland may be able to secure a legal abortion if needed.

Between 2010 and 2020, fewer than five legal abortions a year were carried out in Poland on the grounds of rape, with women needing permission from a prosecutor.

Radio NZ - Sweden and Finland sign security deal with UK

breaking

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has announced he agreed new deals with Sweden and Finland to bolster European security, pledging to support both countries' armed forces should they come under attack.

Johnson signed the new declarations, described by Britain as "a step-change in defence and security cooperation", during visits to both Sweden and Finland on Wednesday (local time).

"What it says is that in the event of a disaster, or in the event of an attack on either of us, then we will come to each other's assistance, including with military assistance," Johnson said at a press conference in Helsinki.

Russia's invasion of Ukraine has led to a rethink of how Sweden - and neighbour Finland - safeguard national security.

Both are expected to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO), but both are worried they would be vulnerable while their applications are processed, which could take up to a year.

Talks by George Friedman are by definition not "a bit long." If anything, they're too short 😁

There were Russians well aware this was idiotic.
Russia's delusional leadership had been smoking its own propaganda.

Some of us have had bosses like that, you are just there to make it happen.
Contradicting their view of what market is and wants ends badly.

Others who had retired from senior Russian military positions had already indicated what would happen.

Earlier in this thread, the issue of Israel's stance on the Ukraine war was raised.

Israel hoped to leave the situation in Syria un-disturbed. The Assad Syrian government is (or was) presently assisted by Russian troops but those, at least somewhat battle experienced, troops are now needed in Ukraine.

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/russia-ukraine-war-syria-troops-moved-b2077499.html

Now they're going to be pulled out, the situation in Syria may tip in favour of the free Syrian army and/or ISIS type groups.

The last thing Israel wants next door is a rabid Islamic theocracy - an evil dictator is much preferred.

It remains to be seen if these more experienced troops fare better in Ukraine.

‘They were furious’: the Russian soldiers refusing to fight in Ukraine | Russia | The Guardian

He was soon transferred to Belgorod, a Russian city close to the border with Ukraine, where he has been stationed since. “I have served for five years in the army. My contract ends in June. I will serve my remaining time and then I am out of here,” he said. “I have nothing to be ashamed of. We aren’t officially in a state of war, so they could not force me to go.”

Under Russian military rules, troops who refuse to fight in Ukraine can face dismissal but cannot be prosecuted, said Mikhail Benyash, a lawyer who has been advising soldiers who choose that option.

Benyash said “hundreds and hundreds” of soldiers had been in touch with his team for advice on how they could avoid being sent to fight. Among them were 12 national guardsmen from Russia’s southern city of Krasnodar who were fired after refusing to go to Ukraine.

Pointing to Russia’s military laws, Benyash said it would be more difficult for soldiers to refuse to fight if Russia were to declare a full-scale war. “During wartime, rules are totally different. Refusal then would mean much harsher penalties. They would be looking at time in prison.”

While the exact number of soldiers refusing to fight remains unclear, such stories illustrate what military experts and western governments say is one of Russia’s biggest obstacles in Ukraine: a severe shortage of infantry soldiers.

Moscow initially put about 80% of its main ground combat forces – 150,000 men – into the war in February, according to western officials. But significant damage has been done to that army, which has confronted logistical problems, poor morale and an underestimated Ukrainian resistance.

If 80% of troops were around Ukraine who is protecting the other borders? Or is Putin as blind as three mice?

In this BBC report, Russians arrive in a stolen van daubed with the V sign used by Russian forces and the words Tank Spetsnaz in black paint.

After talking to a 65 year old security guard, they waited till he slowly walked away. With his back turned, two of them calmly shot him in the back, and resumed their looting.

BBC News: Ukraine conflict: Russian soldiers seen shooting dead unarmed civilians

When Leonid Pliats and his boss were shot in the back by Russian soldiers, the killing was captured on CCTV cameras in clear and terrible detail. The footage, which was obtained by the BBC, is now being investigated by Ukrainian prosecutors as a suspected war crime.

It was the height of the fighting around Kyiv and the main roads into the capital were a battlefield, including around the bicycle shop where Leonid worked as a security guard.

But this was no firefight: the video clearly shows heavily armed Russian soldiers shooting the two unarmed Ukrainians and then looting the business.

We have pieced together the full sequence of events, matching what was recorded on multiple CCTV cameras around the site with the testimony of people Leonid phoned that day, as well as the Ukrainian volunteer fighters who tried to rescue him.
