The Late Show with Stephen Colbert

Note Stephen jokes in passing about "Deflategate." American football team Patriots' player Tom Brady partially deflated footballs in a game. The controversy resulted in the player being suspended for four games. The owner was fined $1 million. This was all some years ago.

This month the owner is Trump's friend and is involved in massage parlour prostitution. The Chinese female owner of the massage parlor is being investigated for selling access to Trump and family. She is suspected of close ties to China intelligence.

For most Presidents this would be a scandal. For Trump it's called just another Wednesday.

The Washington Post - Paul Manafort is sentenced to a total of 7 1/2 years in prison for conspiracy and fraud, and charged with mortgage fraud in N.Y.

March 13 at 1:36 PM

Once a globetrotting lobbyist and consultant to presidents, Paul Manafort was sentenced Wednesday to federal prison for the second time in seven days, giving him a total sentence of 7 1/2 years for his two federal cases.

And soon after he left the court hearing in Washington in a wheelchair to return to the cell in Alexandria, Va., where he has been held for nine months , prosecutors in New York announced a 16-count grand jury indictment charging the former Trump campaign chairman with mortgage fraud, falsifying business records and conspiracy.

President Trump would not be able to pardon Manafort on the state charges, which are separate from the federal cases for which Manafort was just sentenced. ...

Yes, a third set of charges.

TRUMP’S BUDGET CONTAINS TWENTY MILLION DOLLARS FOR BAIL March 11, 2019

WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report)—Donald J. Trump’s $4.7-trillion budget raised eyebrows on Monday when government-watchdog groups discovered that it contained twenty million dollars for bail.

The line item for a “bail fund” was buried in the fine print of the published budget, along with a footnote specifying that the money could be used only to bail out Trump and members of his immediate family.

The footnote listed the members of his family who would be eligible to use the funds, including his daughter Ivanka and his sons Donald, Jr., and Eric, but not his son-in-law, Jared Kushner.

CNN - Two resolutions in the Senate are testing GOP allegiance to Trump

March 14, 2019

Republicans are on the verge of their second high-stakes votes this week that will test their allegiance to President Donald Trump and force the party to reckon with how far it is willing to let executive power reach.

The votes - first a resolution passed Wednesday that pulls back American aid to Saudi forces in Yemen, followed by a resolution Thursday to block Trump's emergency declaration on the southern border - have left some in the GOP conflicted about whether they will vote with Trump or protect congressional authority ...

The resolutions are both privileged, which means they cannot be stopped by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell ...

Republicans' hopes all but evaporated Wednesday afternoon after Trump called into the Republican Senate lunch to announce he would not support a proposal from GOP Sens. Mike Lee of Utah and Thom Tillis of North Carolina that would limit the President's future ability to issue national emergencies.

The proposal had been intended to try to limit the number of Republican defections on the national emergency vote Thursday. ...

The Washington Post - Senate rebukes Trump with vote ordering U.S. military to end support for Saudi-led war in Yemen

March 13 at 8:09 PM

The Senate voted Wednesday to end U.S. support for the Saudi-led military campaign in Yemen, its latest rebuke of the Trump administration’s continued embrace of the Saudi monarchy despite growing frustration among lawmakers with its actions on the world stage.

The 54-to-46 vote marks the second time in recent months that the Senate has rejected the United States’ continued participation in Saudi Arabia’s bombing campaign against Yemen’s Houthi rebels, waged in the name of holding back Iran’s expansion in the region. ...

Is the Senate finally getting its Mojo back?  Tomorrow's vote on the "emergency" may give us a clue.

Donald's bad week, continued ...

The New York Times -
Senate Rejects Trump’s Border Emergency Declaration, Setting Up First Veto

March 14, 2019

WASHINGTON — The Senate on Thursday easily voted to overturn President Trump’s declaration of a national emergency at the southwestern border, delivering a bipartisan rebuke to what lawmakers in both parties deemed executive overreach by a president determined to build his border wall over Congress’s objections.

The 59-41 vote on the House-passed measure sets up the first veto of Mr. Trump’s presidency.

It was not overwhelming enough to override Mr. Trump’s promised veto, but Congress has now voted to block a presidential emergency declaration for the first time - and on one of the core promises that animated Mr. Trump’s political rise, the vow to build a wall between the United States and Mexico. ...

The vote marks an explicit rebuke of Mr. Trump’s effort to sidestep the constitutional power of the purse given to Congress, and although supporters will not be able to overcome a veto, the action could bolster a number of lawsuits contesting the emergency declaration as a flagrant violation of the Constitution’s separation of powers.

The number of Republican defections [12] underscores the turmoil within the Republican Conference, where senators were torn between supporting the president’s vision for border security and asserting Congress’s constitutional prerogative to dictate federal spending. ...

Is the Trump edifice finally starting to crumble? No less than 12 Senate Republicans voting against him is a big deal, however he tries to spin it. The House also just voted 420-0 to demand that the full Mueller report be released. And it censored the Saudis, against Trump's wishes. Maybe there is hope yet.

CNN - Explosive revelations in Russia saga add up to a bad day for Trump

March 14, 2019

It would be hard to think of a more damaging day for a President than one on which his former campaign chairman disappeared behind bars for years to come.

But Paul Manafort's new sentence was the least of Donald Trump's worries Wednesday as his Russia investigation nightmare took yet another turn for the worse.

New suspicions about dangled pardons, conflicting congressional testimony, implicit pleas for clemency and fresh suggestions of inappropriate presidential behavior delivered a new twist to the drama with Washington already on edge in anticipation of special counsel Robert Mueller's final report. ...

Whitaker back on the hot seat

House Judiciary Chairman Jerrold Nadler demonstrated the Democrats' capacity to break open new seams of the Russia controversy when he emerged from a closed-door meeting with Whitaker to talk to reporters.

The New York Democrat said that unlike in a previous open congressional hearing, Whitaker did not deny that Trump had called him to discuss the Cohen case: "He did not deny it," Nadler said. "He did not say no."

The issue could be significant because it raises the possibility that the President spoke to the then-top Justice Department official about a case linked to his personal and business affairs involving his former fixer.

At best, such a conversation would appear inappropriate and unethical since the President is the country's top law enforcement officer.

At worst it could again raise suggestions that Trump may have obstructed justice, in addition to possible past examples of such behavior being investigated by Mueller. ...

Many think Trump's comments with extreme right-wing Breitbart is thuggery, encouraging right-wing violence against the left.

https://www.breitbart.com/politics/2019/03/13/exclusive-president-donald-trump-paul-ryan-blocked-subpoenas-of-democrats/

Exclusive — President Donald Trump: Paul Ryan Blocked Subpoenas of Democrats

President Donald Trump is not happy that former House Speaker Paul Ryan blocked subpoenas of people and entities Trump thinks the House GOP should have been investigating during the first two years of his administration.
Trump told Breitbart News in an exclusive lengthy Oval Office interview that Ryan blocked issuance of subpoenas to people he thinks should have been investigated on the political left, and now that the Republicans no longer have the majority in the House, people Trump says Ryan protected may have gotten away with whatever they did that warranted investigation.

Trump said that House Freedom Caucus Chairman Rep. Mark Meadows (R-NC) and his predecessor and fellow conservative Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) wanted to be tougher with the left, but that Ryan would not let them.

“Paul Ryan wouldn’t give the right to have any subpoenas,” Trump told Breitbart News. “Okay? Now in all fairness, Meadows and Jordan and all these guys, they wanted to go tougher, but they weren’t allowed to by leadership.”

Trump’s comments came in a wider part of the conversation about how the left is more “vicious” than the right—and that the left in American politics plays “cuter and tougher.”

“So here’s the thing—it’s so terrible what’s happening,” Trump said when asked by Breitbart News Washington Political Editor Matthew Boyle about how the left is fighting hard.
You know, the left plays a tougher game, it’s very funny. I actually think that the people on the right are tougher, but they don’t play it tougher. Okay?

I can tell you I have the support of the police, the support of the military, the support of the Bikers for Trump – I have the tough people, but they don’t play it tough — until they go to a certain point, and then it would be very bad, very bad.

But the left plays it cuter and tougher. Like with all the nonsense that they do in Congress … with all this invest[igations]—that’s all they want to do is –you know, they do things that are nasty. Republicans never played this.

Trump’s relationship with Ryan during Ryan’s tenure was fraught with peril from the get-go. Ryan only hesitantly backed Trump’s 2016 campaign in 2016 once Trump won the GOP nomination, but then backed off from supporting Trump after the release of the infamous Access Hollywood tape. Ryan ditched on a campaign event he had scheduled with Trump that weekend, and the following week held a conference call with House GOP members in early October 2016 in which he told members it would be acceptable to him if they abandoned the GOP nominee for president just weeks before the 2016 election.

“I am not going to defend Donald Trump—not now, not in the future,” Ryan said on the private call, audio of which was obtained by Breitbart News and published in early 2017.

What Trump forgets is that the military swears allegiance to the constitution, not the president. These are not his personal troops.
