You could argue that losing your reputation is an occupational hazard of working in the Trump administration: When the president thinks you’ve lost your value, he unceremoniously tosses you aside.

That seems to be what happened to Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen. She was forced to step down after a meeting with President Trump this weekend, The Washington Post and others report.

Even by Trump administration standards, where being fired by tweet is the norm, Nielsen’s forced resignation this weekend was particularly egregious. And it underscores just how anxious the president is about whether he has done enough to deliver on his hard-line immigration policies ahead of 2020.

Nielsen is the person in Trump’s Cabinet charged with carrying out his hard-line immigration policies. Even though behind the scenes Nielsen had reportedly fought Trump’s most controversial ideas, like separating migrant families at the border, she also went out of her way to publicly defend even the most extreme, often resorting to factually dishonest arguments that earned her public ridicule.

As The Fix’s Aaron Blake has chronicled, Nielsen has blatantly contradicted or ignored findings by the State Department, the U.S. intelligence community and her own agency to toe the president’s line on a number of issues:

Her agency’s policy of separating migrant children from their parents at the border.

She once argued “we do not have a policy of separating families at the border, period,” even though it was her agency’s interpretation of existing law that separated the families. Trump implicitly acknowledged as much when he abruptly ended it, shortly after Nielsen tweeted that.

Whether border crossings rise to a national emergency.

When Trump went around Congress and declared a national emergency at the border to build his wall earlier this year, Nielsen had to go before lawmakers and defend that legally questionable move. But she was undercut by her boss when Trump said he didn’t have to declare this emergency.

Trump’s worldview on race.

She refused to confirm whether Trump called Haiti, El Salvador and African nations “sh1thole countries,” even though she was present at the meeting where it happened. Then, when asked by members of Congress why Trump said he wanted more immigrants from Norway instead of these majority-minority countries, she feigned ignorance that Norway is a mostly white country so as to avoid having to talk about the undeniable racial component of Trump’s comments.

Whether terrorists are crossing the border.

During the government shutdown fight over the border this year, Nielsen more than any other Trump official insisted on repeating a falsehood that terrorists have crossed the U.S.-Mexico border. The State Department has said there’s “no credible evidence” that terrorists are in Mexico trying to cross the border, let alone have made it across.

Basic facts about Russian election interference.

She has said she didn’t know if Russia interfered in the 2016 president election to help Trump win, despite a thorough intelligence report declaring as much. “That the specific intent was to help President Trump win? I’m not aware of that,” she said as recently as summer of 2018, more than two years after the report was released to the public.

As we said, embarrassment and public ridicule are part of the job of being a Trump administration official. Trump bashed his former attorney general, Jeff Sessions, publicly on Twitter, so much so that Republicans in Congress urged him to stop.

But the thanklessness of Nielsen’s job was particularly notable, and the extent to which Nielsen stuck her neck out for Trump was eyebrow-raising in Washington. She’s a former Bush administration official who had little-to-no immigration extremism in her background before this job. Post reporting suggests that Trump and senior adviser Stephen Miller wanted her and an official nominated to lead the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency out because they weren’t tough enough

Treasury Department lawyers consulted with the White House general counsel’s office about the potential release of President Trump’s tax returns before House Democrats formally requested the records, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said Tuesday.

 

Mnuchin had not previously revealed that the White House was playing any official role in the Treasury Department’s decision on releasing Trump’s tax returns.

 

Democrats are asking for six years of Trump’s returns, using a federal law that says the treasury secretary “shall furnish” the records upon the request of House or Senate chairmen. The process is designed to be walled off from White House interference, in part because of corruption that took place during the Teapot Dome scandal in the 1920s. ...

 

 



 

The New York Times - William Barr Says Mueller Report Will Be Public ‘Within a Week’

• Attorney General William P. Barr said he will deliver the Mueller report to Congress and the public within a week, reiterating his earlier promise to release it by mid-April.

 

• Testifying before the House Appropriations Committee on Tuesday, Mr. Barr said he would be transparent about redactions in the report. But he demurred when asked whether he has briefed the White House on it.

 

• The Justice Department inspector general expects to finish an examination of aspects of the Russia investigation by May or June, Mr. Barr revealed.

We see signs that the president's abilities are declining, but the only way to find out for sure is to give him a full neuropsychological evaluation.

 

If Donald Trump were your father, you would run, not walk, to a neurologist for an evaluation of his cognitive health. You don’t have to be a doctor to see something is very wrong.

 

Joe Scarborough, who has known Trump for years, said in 2017 that Trump's mental confusion reminded him of his mother, who had Alzheimer's for 10 years. “It's getting worse, and not a single person who works for him doesn’t know he has early signs of dementia,” he said of Trump last year on his MSNBC show.

 

To mental health professionals like me, the red flags are waving wildly.

 

In January 2018, over 70 of us wrote a letter to the president’s physician, Dr. Ronny Jackson, urging him to administer a cognitive exam during the president’s physical because we had seen a marked deterioration in his verbal functioning, possibly due to cognitive decline. ...

Not a doctor or qualified in any other sense but I have been convinced for some time that there is something wrong with Trump's brain beyond just being mean and nasty. I have never been close to someone with dementia and don't know how it works, but I have been struck at how Trump rambles incoherently in interviews and when speaking off the cuff, but somehow manages to come across as forceful and articulate when addressing one of his rallies. Of course I don't know what is going on behind the scenes, but he does seem fluent and in command at these events. Again, I have little knowledge of dementia but I believe sufferers in the earlier stages have lucid intervals mixed in with the chaos. 

 

If Trump is in fact mentally incompetent, America (and the world) is going to have a hell of a problem on its hands. He won't go gracefully and his Billy-Bob and Peggy-Sue cheering squad is not about to let him go without a fight. This could be the start of something big. Can saner heads prevail? Are there any left in the Trump cabinet? Will the military stick to its training, or will it decide that extraordinary circumstances call for something special? It may get very messy.

Redaction of Mueller Report Halted as Barr Passes Out from Sharpie Fumes

 

 

WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report)—The redaction of the Mueller report stalled on Monday after the Attorney General, William Barr, passed out from inhaling fumes from multiple Sharpie markers.

 

Barr, who had been working around the clock to redact the report before its release, reportedly lost consciousness while trying to black out a seventy-four-page section detailing Donald Trump, Jr.,’s contacts with more than three dozen Russian individuals.

 

“You cannot use that many Sharpies, for hours on end, without proper ventilation,” a Justice Department staffer, speaking on condition of anonymity, said. “This was a disaster waiting to happen.”

 

The insentient Barr was rushed to Walter Reed medical center, where a grim-faced hospital spokesperson described his condition as “Ben Carson–like.”

 

At the White House, the press secretary, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, offered a more upbeat assessment. “We expect Attorney General Barr to make a swift and full recovery, so that he can get to work on the President’s taxes,” she said.

Good call. But look at the margin that was afforded to the last President with dementia - *Ronald Reagan. He was probably hanging out of his tree by one ankle for most of his 8-year term.

 

Which raises the question - do Americans really care about their President's nuttiness?

 

Or do they all hope - as do we , and pretty much all of the global residents who can read and write - just count on some unknown Tooth Fairy in the White House basement who controls the over-ride button?

The British used to make jokes about Reagan searching for his missing brain. But the times and the people were different. Unlike many, I was no fan of Reagan even when he was California governor, but compared to Trump he would look positively appealing today.

I suggest you face the fact that Trump is sane and yet exactly capable of all that as well. Believing Trump insane is just a convenient out to avoid facing the facts.

Countries typically get a leader like Trump when they are in the deep deep doo doo. I like to think it's purely the republican party and the southern strategy reaching it's logical conclusion of morally corrupting the party.

Then I think there is more to it. America does have some serious problems which are nothing like Trump's problems and preoccupations.

I don't think Trump is insane. He does clearly suffer from a number of psychiatric illnesses but his disconnection from reality does not (yet) meet the standard of madness. I do think his brain is defective and the behaviour he exhibits is strongly suggestive of dementia.
