The Washington Post - Trump demands subservience and gets incompetence

June 25 at 7:54 PM

The Trump administration, if you haven’t noticed, is undergoing one of its frequent paroxysms of incompetence.

On the border, the administration holds hundreds of migrant children in deplorable conditions: filthy, frightened and hungry.

The president ordered and then called off a massive immigration raid, and, in the middle of the chaos, the administration’s top border security official resigned Tuesday.

Overseas, the administration is stumbling toward war with Iran, ordering and then canceling an attack.

Iran on Tuesday said the White House is “afflicted by mental retardation,” and Trump responded by threatening Iran with “obliteration.”

Here in Washington, Trump just appointed a new press secretary for the third time and a White House communications director for the seventh time.

He refuses to say whether he has confidence in his FBI director, his third, and he’s publicly feuding with the Federal Reserve chairman he appointed over whether Trump can fire him.

Meantime, Trump is defying a Trump-appointed watchdog who called for the firing of White House counselor Kellyanne Conway for illegal political activities, and he’s brushing off the latest credible accusation of sexual misconduct by saying the accuser is “not my type.” ...

The chaos takes on many forms, but most of it stems from a single cause: Trump’s determination to run the country like “The Apprentice.” ...

Note this video is over one hour long. The introduction starts at the 2 minute mark.

http://fortune.com/2019/06/24/mueller-report-live-reading-hollywood-stars/

From Fortune Magazine

If you’re waiting for a cinematic adaptation of the Mueller Report, you likely have a long wait ahead of you. If, however, you want to hear some of Hollywood’s biggest actors give their take on the special counsel‘s investigation of Donald Trump and interference in the 2016 election, today is your lucky day.

A gaggle of stars will give a live performance of the report, which will be live streamed on the website of Law Works, a group that is hoping to raise the public’s awareness of the report’s contents and “expose current threats to core American values and electoral systems.”

The Investigation: A Search for the Truth in Ten Acts, as the reading is called, was organized by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Robert Schenkkan, who also earned an Emmy for his HBO series The Pacific in 2010.

Among the actors who will participate in the reading are Annette Bening, Kevin Kline, John Lithgow, Sigourney Weaver, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Mark Hamill, Justin Long, Piper Perabo, Michael Shannon, and Zachary Quinto.

You may want to skip to 2 minute mark

Trump claims Japan 'doesn't have to help' if US is attacked

By Zachary Cohen, CNN

Washington (CNN)President Donald Trump again lamented what he views as an unequal military alliance Wednesday, claiming that if the US is attacked, Japan "doesn't have to help us at all" and "can watch it on the Sony television."

Trump's criticism of Japan came during an interview with on Fox Business Network when he was asked about the possibility of bilateral trade deals ahead of his G20 trip, where he will meet with several counterparts, including Japanese President Shinzo Abe.

"Let me start off with general statement -- almost all countries in this world take tremendous advantage," of the US, Trump told Fox Business by phone, repeating a common refrain of his 2016 campaign.

The President then criticized NATO broadly, before singling out Japan for the terms of its military alliance with the US.

"If Japan is attacked, we will fight World War Three ... with our lives and with our treasure," he said, adding, "If we're attacked, Japan doesn't have to help us at all," Trump said. Japan, he claimed, "can watch it on the Sony television, okay, the attack."

Earlier this week, Bloomberg reported that Trump had privately mused about withdrawing from a longstanding defense treaty between the US and Japan because he views it as one sided.

And it appears Trump was again referring to that same agreement in his interview with Fox Business on Wednesday.

The US has been a close military and diplomatic ally of Tokyo for more than 70 years. The two countries first signed the Treaty of San Francisco in 1951, officially ending World War II.

The agreement was revised in 1960 as the "Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security between the United States and Japan," which allows the US to maintain military bases in Japan with the understanding that it would defend Japan if it were ever attacked.

However, Trump has repeatedly urged military allies in east Asia to pay for their own defense, teasing the end of a US military presence in the region while encouraging Japan to buy more American weapons to better protect itself against threats from North Korea.

Ahead of the G20 summit, which will be held in Japan, Trump is again voicing his frustration over military agreements with key allies.

Ugh, this f***ing guy. I struggle to even coherently frame my disbelief that anyone could be this ignorant of the history of WWII and the terms of Japan's surrender imposed upon it by the allied powers - most significantly by the US - leading to the constitution forbidding Japan from having an offensive military capability.

On the other hand I'm sure the depths of his ignorance on practically any topic you care to choose have yet to be measured.

The New York Times - Photo of Migrants Shocks, but Congress Stalls on Border Aid

June 26, 2019

... Trump denied any responsibility for the tragedy depicted in the photo, insisting that the blame for the deaths of the migrants fell on Democrats because of their refusal to accede to the president’s demands to change asylum laws.

They want to have open borders, and open borders mean crime, and open borders mean people drowning in the rivers,” Mr. Trump said.

I hate it, and I know it could stop immediately if the Democrats would change the laws. And then that father, who probably was this wonderful guy, with his daughter, things like that wouldn’t happen.” ...

Lie, deny, deflect, blame ... repeat.

Trump, as all Republicans, wants to arm the world.

Not much has changed since this video, 13 years ago in this parody parody of "We Are The World" spoofing George W. Bush and the Republican party.

The first lyrics mentions Halliburton. which bilked government agencies to the tune of $17.2 billion in Iraq war-related revenue from 2003-2006 alone.

From Wiki: "Kellyanne Elizabeth Conway is an American pollster, political consultant, and pundit who serves as counselor to the president in the administration of U.S. president Donald Trump."

From Wiki: "The 1939 Hatch Act forbids the intimidation or bribery of voters and restricts political campaign activities by federal employees.

It prohibits using any public funds designated for relief or public works for electoral purposes.

It forbids officials paid with federal funds from using promises of jobs, promotion, financial assistance, contracts, or any other benefit to coerce campaign contributions or political support.

It provides that persons below the policy-making level in the executive branch of the federal government must refrain from 'any active part' in political campaigns"

The New York Times - Supreme Court Rules on Gerrymandering and Census Question

The justices handed Republicans a key victory by refusing to halt even the most extreme gerrymandered maps.

June 27, 2019

WASHINGTON — In two rulings that bore huge implications for American politics and governance, the Supreme Court handed Republicans a key victory by refusing to halt even the most extreme gerrymandered maps and potentially gave Democrats a win by at least delaying the addition of a citizenship question to the 2020 census.

The two bitterly contested cases addressed an issue fundamental to the political system itself: How that system allocates power, and ultimately, how much of a voice the American people have in selecting their leaders.

Gerrymandered maps that entrench one party in near-unbreakable power have become rampant as courts dithered over how and whether to rein them in.

Now, with a green light from the justices, Republicans have an opportunity to lock in political dominance for the next decade in many of the 22 states where they control both the legislature and the governor’s office.

And the decision will almost certainly force Democrats, who control 14 statehouses, to reconsider their belated crusade against gerrymandered maps and begin drawing their own - an eat-or-be-eaten response to Republican success in gaming the redistricting process. ...

Trump sent out a tweet disagreeing with the Supreme Court decision on the citizenship question in the census and now wants to delay the census.

The problem is SCOTUS is independent and the President can't "just disagree" and the census is mandated by the Constitution so he can't "delay it".

Checks and balances alright... "To defend the constitution" is another thing Republicans and this clown won't do.
