BREAKING ...

The Washington Post - Reversing course, Trump administration will look for a way to add citizenship question to 2020 Census, DOJ lawyer said

July 3 at 6:28 PM

In a course reversal, a Justice Department attorney on Wednesday said the government is looking for a way to add a citizenship question to the 2020 Census, one day after it said it would drop that effort and was printing the form without it. ...

Joseph Hunt, assistant attorney general for the department’s civil division, said the administration was looking for a legal path forward after a Supreme Court last week froze the administration’s plan to include it on the survey sent to every U.S. household and said the administration needed to provide a better justification if it wants to add it. ...

Best summary of Trump presidency: Kind of shady

https://theweek.com/speedreads/850821/vip-section-trumps-july-4th-event-filled-by-campaign-gop-groups-seems-kind-shady

The VIP section of Trump's July 4th event, filled by his campaign and GOP groups, seems kind of shady

President Trump is throwing a big military-themed Fourth of July party at the Lincoln Memorial on Thursday, you're paying for it, and tickets to the VIP section are being handed out to the Republican National Committee, Trump's re-election campaign, and GOP donors, The Washington Post confirmed Tuesday. RNC and Trump campaign officials said that's no big deal because both parties engage in partisan ticketing for events at the White House.

"This is routine for events like the White House Christmas Open Houses, Garden Tours in spring and fall, etc.," an RNC official told the Post. Trump campaign spokesman Tim Murtaugh said "as a courtesy, the campaign was provided tickets for staff and their families and friends, much like for the Easter Egg Roll or White House garden tours."

The National Mall is not the White House, of course. And presidents don't typically participate in the capital's historically nonpartisan Independence Day celebration.

The Sherman tank is a new generation of stealth weapon that hides behind an invisibility cloak.
Not to be confused with the Shermans used in WWII.😁

Who wants to bet that the tanks tomorrow will be ordered to fire on Congress as the Democratic candidates for the presidency are rounded up and marched off to detention centres and martial law is declared due to a 'national emergency'?

The Washington Post - Trump’s July 4 military parade is a celebration of himself

July 4 at 12:59 AM

As the United States celebrates its independence this July 4, tanks will roll through the streets of the nation’s capital, in a display of military might that’s a major break from tradition for Washington’s annual civic celebration of its independence from the British Empire.

The military vehicles on the Mall will be accompanied by a flyover involving an array of government planes, an extended pyrotechnics show and, of course, a speech by President Trump, who has dubbed the event the “Salute to America.”

But rather than spotlight the sort of united American spirit that Independence Day events generally celebrate, this show will largely be about Trump himself.

And with that, it will display the contradictions that lie at the heart of his conception of U.S. military power. ...

While Trump seeks to align himself closer with the military more than previous U.S. leaders, he often betrays a lack of military understanding.

Before this week’s event, for example, Trump said he would be showing off “brand new Sherman tanks.” Sherman tanks were used during World War II; they were decommissioned in the 1950s.

This ignorance fits into a pattern of paradoxes that defines Trump’s views of the military:

  • He consistently praises troops but avoided service himself.

  • He’s placed military leaders in top political office, then ignored their advice.

  • And he’s traveled internationally for military parades but then skipped ceremonies for the war dead. ...

EDIT

and the headline says it all ...

Oh well, he got the colours right, ferrous oxide. aka rust. When it meets air it oxidises and goes orange. (ok red but orange suits my post). Both end up as low value thereafter

Trump biographer, who's seen president's tax returns, urges democrats to 'go back 15 years' to find 'murky' dealings

by Christina Ahao

Bloomberg Opinion executive editor Tim O'Brien, who claims he's seen the president's tax returns, urged Democrats to "go back about 15 years" when requesting for his tax returns to find "murky" dealings.

During a segment on MSNBC's Deadline: White House host on Thursday, O'Brien, who penned TrumpNation: The Art of Being the Donald, a biography about Trump, talked to anchor Nicolle Wallace about whether the public should be allowed to see the president's tax returns.

"A U.S. citizen should know the financial conflicts that potentially reside in the Oval Office, and especially with this president," O'Brien said. "The issues that have floated around him—business relationships that he's continued to maintain even after he went to the White House, foreign influences featured through either loans or investments in his businesses—all these are sitting out in a dark cloud that no one has a handle on, because he hasn't released his tax returns."

"You've seen the taxes, though, right?" Wallace later asked O'Brien.

"Right, he turned the taxes over," he replied. "So he sued me for the biography I wrote on him, and because he sued me for about three pages of the book that focus on how much money he had, when we got to the discovery process we got his bank records and his taxes and his business records.

"I think it's pretty clear what he's afraid of coming out in those things," O'Brien continued. "Part of it's his ego: He doesn't want people to know that his business is not as robust as he's always claimed it to be."

O'Brien went on to note that the "scariest thing sitting in front of" Trump when it comes to his tax returns is "what kind of financial relationships does he have overseas in Russia, in the Arab world and China."

Later in the segment, O'Brien said he didn't think "six years [of Trump's tax returns] are enough" for Democrats to find something. "I think they need to go back about 15 years," he said. "A lot of cash came into his business in the mid-[2000s] from sources that are very murky. And I think they would answer a lot of questions about his relationship with Russia, for example.

"And six years isn't going to do it, so I think they need to get more aggressive about the time frame, too," he added.

Mother Jones

Pentagon Guidance to Troops in Trump’s July 4th Event: Say I Love My Tank

Mother Jones obtained a guide for how the Defense Department wants military personnel to speak to the media.

by Matt Cohen

Tanks are rolling into Washington, DC, tomorrow for Donald Trump’s “Salute to America,” a revised version of the city’s annual Fourth of July celebration that the president promises will be the “show of a lifetime.” It will be a full-on military display, which—in addition to the tanks—includes “multiple flyovers,” military music, a Trump speech in front of the Lincoln Memorial to top Republican donors and political appointees, and, of course, fireworks. All of which has caused the National Park Service to divert nearly $2.5 million typically used to improve its parks to cover the costs.

Realizing this will be a controversial event, the Pentagon has distributed instructions to service members participating in the shindig on what to do if approached by a reporter, and the advice is essentially this: Say you love your tank.

Since this is a military celebration, there’s sure to be plenty of military personnel in attendance—alongside hordes of reporters angling to get the inside scoop from service members about what they really think of this whole celebration. Not on Trump’s watch.

Mother Jones obtained a photo of a card that is being distributed to participating service members with instructions from the Pentagon about what to say—and not to say—when speaking with members of the media. The Department of Defense would like service members to be clear that they are “proud” on several levels.

Under the overall messages, the guide suggests: “I am proud of my job and my vehicle/tank. I am glad to share my experience with American People.”

This President is so dumb, almost impossible to believe. Donald thinks the army fighting the war for independence (American Revolutionary War) dominated the air and took over airports - between 1775 and 1783. The ignorance is astounding.
