Jeffrey Epstein arrested on sex trafficking charges

The girls who were abused by Jeffrey Epstein and the cops who championed their cause remain angry over what they regard as a gross injustice, while Epstein's employees and those who engineered his non-prosecution agreement have prospered.

More than a decade after receiving one of the most lenient sentences for a serial sex offender in U.S history, multimillionaire Jeffrey Epstein has been arrested outside of New York, sources confirmed to the Miami Herald Saturday night.

Epstein was arrested at Teterboro Airport in New Jersey, according to one of the sources. Flight records show he had just flown to Teterboro from Paris on Saturday.

Around 5:30 p.m. Saturday, about a dozen federal agents broke down the door to Epstein’s Manhattan townhouse to execute search warrants, witnesses and sources said.

“We heard the loud banging and we walked over and saw all these FBI agents just pounding down the door,” a witness told the Herald.

Epstein, 66, is expected to be arraigned in federal court in New York on Monday on charges that he molested dozens of underage girls in New York and in Florida, the sources said. His arrest, first reported by the Daily Beast, comes nearly two weeks after the Justice Department announced that it would not throw out his 2008 non-prosecution agreement, even though a federal judge ruled it was illegal.

Rumors had been circulating for months that Epstein was under investigation on sex charges in the Southern District of New York. It’s not clear what instances those investigations involved, and the Herald had not been able to confirm the status of the New York probe.

Sources said he was arrested by the FBI pursuant to a sealed indictment that will be unsealed on Monday. He is in custody in New York and a bail hearing is set for Monday.

“That bail hearing will be critical because if they grant him bail, he has enough money that he will disappear and they will never get him,’’ a source in New York told the Herald.

Last November, the Miami Herald published a series of stories, titled Perversion of Justice, that described the ways in which the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Florida, Alexander Acosta, worked in conjunction with Epstein’s lawyers to engineer the non-prosecution agreement — and keep it secret from Epstein’s victims, so they could not object. Acosta is now President Donald Trump’s secretary of labor.

“Oh my God. Finally, finally, finally! Justice!’ said Michelle Licata, one of Epstein’s victims who was molested by him when she was 16 years old.

Epstein, who has homes in Manhattan, Palm Beach, New Mexico, Paris and in the U.S. Virgin Islands, sexually abused nearly three dozen girls, mostly 13-16 years old, at his Palm Beach mansion from 1999 to 2006, according to investigators. He used the girls to help recruit other young girls as part of an operation that ran similar to a pyramid scheme. He also had recruiters who helped with his appointments, scheduling as many as three or four girls a day, the FBI probe found.

Acosta met one-on-one with Epstein’s lawyer, Jay Lefkowitz, in October 2007, at a West Palm Beach Marriott. Records reviewed by the Herald showed that it was at that meeting that Acosta agreed to a non-prosecution agreement that gave Epstein and others involved in his operation federal immunity.

As part of the deal, Epstein was allowed to plead guilty to two state prostitution charges involving a 17-year-old girl, and he served 13 months in the Palm Beach County jail. The deal was sealed, however, so that no one — not even his victims — knew the details about the agreement until nearly a year later. By that time, Epstein had already been released from jail and had returned to his jet-setting life.

On Wednesday, a federal appeals court in New York ordered the unsealing of up to 2,000 pages of documents that are expected to show evidence relating to whether Epstein and his partner, Ghislaine Maxwell, were recruiting underage girls and young women as part of an international sex trafficking operation. Maxwell, 57, has never been charged.

The ruling came after the Herald — joined by a consortium of media companies, including the New York Times — asked that the records be opened. Two other parties, social media blogger Michael Cernovich and lawyer Alan Dershowitz, also sought to have some of the documents made public. Dershowitz, who represented Epstein during the 2006-2007 federal criminal probe, has also been accused of having sex with one of Epstein’s underage girls. Dershowitz has denied the allegation and has said that the records will clear him of any wrongdoing.

As part of its investigation, the Herald was able to identify nearly 80 girls who were molested by Epstein. Four of the victims, now in their late 20s and early 30s, spoke on video about how they were traumatized first by Epstein, then by his lawyers and private investigators, and finally by the prosecutors themselves, who disposed of the case without telling them.

One of the victims, Virginia Roberts Giuffre, said that she was forced by Epstein and Maxwell to have sex with a number of wealthy and powerful politicians, academics and government leaders, including Dershowitz and Prince Andrew. She has never named the other men, largely because she has been afraid, her lawyers said.

BBC News - Inquiry launched into 'inept Trump administration' leaked emails

The [UK] government has begun an inquiry into a leak of emails from the UK ambassador in Washington which deemed the Trump administration "inept".

 

In the messages, Sir Kim Darroch said the White House was "uniquely dysfunctional" and "divided" under Donald Trump.

 

Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt said the memos reflected Sir Kim's "personal view", not that of the UK government.

 

Asked about the leak, [Trump] told reporters in New Jersey: "We're not big fans of that man and he has not served the UK well." ...

 

The Foreign Office said the leak to the Mail on Sunday was "mischievous", but did not deny the accuracy of the memos. ...

In a cache of diplomatic cables leaked and published over the weekend, Ambassador Kim Darroch described the Trump White House as “inept,” “dysfunctional” and “unpredictable.”

 

Trump tweeted his displeasure on Monday - and more than hinted that he is looking forward to a change: “I do not know the Ambassador, but he is not liked or well thought of within the U.S. We will no longer deal with him. The good news for the wonderful United Kingdom is that they will soon have a new Prime Minister.” ...

On the face of it, the USA World Cup winners ought to be the kind of cause the President can quickly embrace, since they are the epitome of one interpretation of his motto, "America First."

But while other key political figures from all sides of the ideological spectrum quickly tweeted rapturous praise, it took Trump several hours to offer his congratulations.

The World Cup winners have long refused to let their results do all the talking.

"You can't win a championship without gays on your team. It's never been done before, ever," Rapinoe said, according to several media outlets including the Guardian in the UK last week.

Rapinoe's confidence to voice her political views put her at odds with Trump after Rapinoe said she wouldn't attend a White House celebration if the team won the World Cup.

It led to the extraordinary spectacle of a sitting President publicly remonstrating with the captain of the team wearing US colors at a tournament overseas -- an episode that helps to encapsulate the exposed political nerves of the Trump era and turned into a dividing line between conservatives and opponents on cable TV.

Trump responded to Rapinoe on June 26 in the traditional manner he reserves for his critics.

"Megan should WIN first before she TALKS! Finish the job!" Trump tweeted before inviting the team, win or lose, to the White House.

"Megan should never disrespect our Country, the White House, or our Flag, especially since so much has been done for her & the team," Trump said.

The spat might seem a personal matter, but the World Cup winners captured America's heart in a way that suggests his political antennae might have failed him.

"He has basically painted himself in a corner of being against Megan Rapinoe," USA TODAY columnist Christine Brennan said on CNN's "State of the Union."

"I think we will see more of this because these women are empowered as never before and they are speaking out against a President that they don't respect."

Rapinoe made no excuses for the willingness of her team to engage in issues beyond wins and losses at a news conference following the World Cup final.

"We say what we feel. All of us really, I know that my voice sometimes is louder, but in meal rooms, in conversations, everybody is in this together," Rapinoe said, with her medal around her neck. "We are such a proud and strong and defiant group of women."

When Donald Trump first opened Trump Tower, the centerpiece of his property empire, he was able to convince everyone from Steven Spielberg to Johnny Carson to Sophia Loren to pay top dollar to live in the place, with units selling for as much as $15 million. Now, thanks to a name that’s synonymous with “racist blowhard of debatable mental stability and questionable moral conduct,” not to mention a lack of updates in recent years, people can’t get away from the building fast enough.

Bloomberg reports that since Trump was elected, at least 13 condos in the tower have been sold. Among the nine for which property records show the original purchase price, eight were unloaded at an inflation-adjusted loss, with several selling at a discount of more than 20 percent. (By contrast, just 0.23 percent of homes sold in Manhattan during the same period booked a loss.)

And, of course, it‘s not hard to understand why!

Michael Sklar, who sold his parents’ unit for $1.83 million last October after they bought it for $1.4 million and spent $400,000 on renovations, summed up the situation thusly: “The name on the building became a problem. . . . No one wants in that building.” Matthew Hughes, a broker at Brown Harris Stevens, said that while the luxury market is softening, “it’s rare that someone owns an apartment here for 10 years and takes a loss.”

Another real-estate agent told reporter Shahien Nasiripour that clients have repeatedly and insistently told him not to show them units in any of Trump’s buildings. It’s a similar situation at Trump properties around the world—last year, Jeffrey Rabiea, who owns three units in the Trump Panama hotel and was part of a group fighting to have the name removed, told The Washington Post: “It’s a bloodbath, basically. It’s a financial bloodbath. . . . Nobody wants to go there. If you’ve got a Marriott and a Hyatt and a Trump, you’re not going to Trump.”

WASHINGTON — President Trump has been violating the Constitution by blocking people from following his Twitter account because they criticized or mocked him, a federal appeals court ruled on Tuesday.

 

The ruling could have broader implications for how the First Amendment applies to the social-media era.

 

Because Mr. Trump uses Twitter to conduct government business, he cannot exclude some Americans from reading his posts - and engaging in conversations in the replies to them - because he does not like their views, a three-judge panel on the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit ruled unanimously.

 

Writing for the panel, Judge Barrington D. Parker noted that the conduct of the government and its officials are subject today to a “wide-open, robust debate” that “generates a level of passion and intensity the likes of which have rarely been seen.”

 

The First Amendment prohibits an official who uses a social media account for government purposes from excluding people from an “otherwise open online dialogue” because they say things the official disagrees with, he wrote. ...

There are some ugly people in America. Trump is one of them. His supporters love him because he is one of them. With him in charge, they don't have to hide or apologise for their ugliness anymore.

 

If Trump's critics can no longer be blocked on his Twitter account, he will be spending all of his time trading insults with them because he is so thin-skinned and can't let anything go. This is a good thing, because he has the attention span of a goldfish and will be too distracted to break anything else. Hopefully his government will then coast to a stop and he will be replaced by someone with a moral compass at the next election, when Ambassador Kim Darroch will be invited back to Washington for a White House dinner in his honour.
