Some of the unhinged hatred for the PM and everything associated with this government (and this is coming from someone who will not vote for Labour as a matter of principle, despite my obviously open liberal leanings) is quite disturbing. Much of this thread isn't a discussion but merely a monologue of rantings and abuse.

err drilling for oil, oil products are linked to climate change. Also, large oil spill will affect the climate. We should be looking for and encouraging the end of fossil fuel addiction and it is right that the Government takes a lead in this.

I suppose it could be a rant? Wasn't intended to be... Anyway, good point u make, I did say it doesn't cause problems, what I was predominantly thinking of was climate change, that presumably being the basis for the ban.

But a well considered decision would have taken into account the impact of oil and gas exploration, and the impact of the ban. I chose to draw a contrast with cars, because they are the cause of a horrible, immeasurable social and environmental impact on an ever increasing scale. Yet there have been no moves to ban cars. The contrast was merely suggested to highlight the stupidity of the ban.

If u Google the PREFU for the 2008 election it gives a fairly honest summary of the economy at the time - after 9 years under Clark and Cullen.

We all argue things on the basis of what we believe. I happen to believe that this government is less awful than another repeat of the previous one. I believe climate change is real and the world has to move away from fossil fuels. I believe someone has to take the first step or everyone will just keep waiting for someone else to go first. I believe that change cannot happen overnight, but the longer it is put off, the bigger the crisis will be when it is forced on us. We cannot yet function economically without cars powered by oil products, but we can start to make the necessary adjustments now. It is a process, not a sudden upheaval. Oil dependency is not just reliance on a raw material, but also a source of income. As long as we cling to the thought of all the money we can make from that oil, we will never move beyond it. Whenever and however we make the break, there will be pain. Putting it off does not make it better.

Here's a funny thought for some of the palpably unhinged that have been "participating" in this thread (I am using the word loosely). What does wasting pages and pages of space prattling on about irrelevancies that betray nothing other than your own personal bigotry and viciousness actually achieve? Most people participate in this kind of community -- at least partly -- to sway others towards your views. As someone with obviously liberal social leanings but votes like a moderate (I usually vote National or choose to conscientiously abstain or vote for a Green candidate for local MP only), the only thing that I really feel like doing every time I read one of your "posts" (again, using the word loosely) is to do my bit to keep this government in power just to spite you and as a blow for human decency.

So it was a bit premature and ill-considered then wasn't it? I accept your view that it had to be done sometime, but given we are going to import and consume the same amount of oil, there is no tangible benefit from this move. It was ideology triumphing over pragmatism. Virtue signalling.

Fair enough. I acknowledged a couple of pages back that I raised the issue without being aware of the common modern extension of what the term meant, and that ought to have been the end of it. Yet here we are, still going on about it?

That is uniquely challenging under our current coalition.

- It wasn't the government that banned offshore Oil & Gas exploration in NZ - it was THE PERSON.

- It wasn't the government that unilaterally banned plastic bags - it was THE PERSON.

- It isn't the government (or even the Foreign Minister) that is at the UN issuing a refusal to support a war on drugs - it is THE PERSON.

- It wasn't the government that sent the financial markets on-edge by talking at cross-purposes about GDP figures - it was THE PERSON

Each of these things has been announced by the PM herself - without any supporting analysis, research, cost/benefit analysis, or select committee debate. (ie. the usual "government" functions.)

Given that this is your house - how would you like these "Captain's Calls" to be critiqued here?
