Sometimes I wonder if smug dismissive comments about the Green movement is just a way for self-satisfied conservatives to feel superior and self-righteous for doing nothing.

Thanks for 1) not addressing any of the actual points I've made and 2) erroneously assumed I'm a 'conservative' in a bid to delegitimize them, I guess?

On a more serious note, I do wonder why critics of the Greens zero in on their excesses and inconsistencies but ignore their legitimate concerns. There seems to be an element of defensiveness about this.

Here's an answer: The Greens profess strong social justice values but, as shown in this thread, their supporters will crawl over broken glass when it comes to avoiding explaining how following through on their strong environmental beliefs will impact actual, IRL poor people?

1. Where did I call you a conservative? I made a general statement about people who comment on the Greens. If you want to assume that mantle, it is up to you.

2. Conservatives - not you, of course - complain that the Greens mix social justice with environmentalism, and for that reason they cannot support them. In fact, most real environmentalists feel that the two go together. Once 'poor' people have better access to education, better working conditions and wages, better support while on a benefit, and a range of other basic human needs, they won't be unfairly disadvantaged by meaningful environmental measures. The two go together. Social justice and environmentalism. Some people seem to have trouble comprehending that.

Fred99: I think it actually is a case of "ride a bike" - but perhaps not that drastic. NZ's private motor car obsession is insane and unsustainable. Catch a bus.
The biggest issue is that the rich consume and pollute the most, and the rich (for the past 30 years or so in particular) always set the dialogue.

My work is seven km's from home, the closest bus stop is around 20 km's from home.
Don't generalize that public transport is the answer for us all, we will never have public transport where we live - at least in my lifetime.

I have heard this one plenty of times before. As others mentioned, its your choice to live where you living. Amazes me how quick people are to moan/complain about lack of UFB where they chose to live, yet you never hear the same sort of moans about a lack of PT.
If you 7km’s from home you should be riding a bike. If that’s too difficult, get an e-bike.

Excuse me, It aint an excuse - it’s reality.

shk292:
Personally, my commute is 38km each way. On a good day, it's 45 minutes by car; average is 50 min, really bad is 1h05. Quickest public transport option including walking to/from bus stops each end is 2 hours 25 min - and I check this each six months or so.

It's a personal choice.

You heard it here first folks, getting up and going to work in a capitalist system is a 'personal choice'.
Thanks for proving my point about the smug dismissiveness of mandatory PT advocates though.

Your priority’s in life are just wrong. 45minutes by car vs 2 hours and 25 minutes by PT? One is a green alternative, one is not. Its really a simple choice. Quickest is not always the best. How much CO2 has your car made in those 45 minutes?

Think through the practicalities of that.  I work from 8:00 to about 4:30.  So, I'd need to be out my front door by 5:26am (according to Google maps), ie, out of bed by 4:55am to get ready.  Then, having done my day's work, I'd get home at 6:45 pm.  Then I need to think about spending time with my kids, helping with homework etc, cooking dinner - all those things.

It's very easy for you - as someone if I recall correctly doesn't do a day's work but relies on govt support - to say the choice is simple and my priorities are wrong.  If I had half your leisure time then maybe I'd think again.   But for now I'm quite happy that I'm prioritising correctly.

I'm also a rural breakdown contractor for my work so can be called out from home or work 24/7, I only have one vehicle so how do I leave it at either location and still do my job? All my tools fill the back of my vehicle - how am I going to carry them on a bike? Or do I jump on my bike at 2.00am and cycle 7km's to work to get it?

I'm not worried about UFB at all, VDSL is plenty good enough for me by the way.

I hope for your sake that car is not the car in your profile picture then? Apologies for judging too quickly. I do hope I am wrong?

I have heard many people throwing around the same excuse as you, yet they chose to drive v8's or v6's. I will have a little more respect for people when they at least chose to drive a smaller petrol car. Something like those little Suzuki's or toyotas, or better still a hybrid/or full electric car. But a big Holden? come on.

Aredwood: The best long term solution might be to scrap all government and council provided public transport. And just build more roads.

shk292: And - a bonus - I generate some CO2 that the plants can use to grow!

I watched this movie on telly a few nights ago, it was called dumb and dumber.. Its really good, you guys should watch it.

In what way?  Did I misinterpret your previous posts?  It's funny how you're quite happy telling others how to live their lives but less comfortable with their views on yours

Reluctant as I am stoop to a level approaching yours, it's a bit rich for someone who makes basic English mistakes in every single sentence they write to label someone else as dumb.

I'm not throwing around excuses because I don't have any. Yeah it is my car, and yes it's a V8 and I love it.

I do around 100 km's a week, so one tank full lasts me a just over a month, most here would be filling their tanks at least once a week so I don't think my emissions output is too bad.

I work hard and pay a sh*t load of tax, so I can have a nice car - I've earned it.

@Darude34: This is my thread. I don't want it to go the way the other one did. Your behaviour is very close to trolling. Ease up or I will ask @freitasm to lock this. Debate is one thing. What you are doing is just sowing discord. If you have a serious point to make, then make it. Quit the attacks and insults. This is a forum for a serious exchange of views. What you are doing doesn't qualify.
