SJB:

What could possibly go wrong?

Note that it's am "interim" government.

What could mainly go wrong is that they appoint members who'll adversely affect any chance of international recognition, cash won't start flowing, people will starve, people will start agitating, the government will quell unrest with the sword, and then it'll get worse.

What's the bet that the "interim" government maintains their control of the country and that free and fair elections never happen?

Almost certain.

OTOH "free and fair" elections don't appear to be the norm in that entire region.

SJB:

The Taliban have announced the new government.

The head of the government is on a UN blacklist and the interior minister is the feared FBI-wanted leader of the Haqqani militant group, Sirajuddin Haqqani. They stated earlier that the government was going to be inclusive but every member is an established Taliban leader.

What could possibly go wrong?

Not much but first up women are barred from sports according to news outlets, and protests are banned.

Batman: Not much but first up women are barred from sports according to news outlets, and protests are banned.

Many of these statements are made off the cuff by lower ranking individuals. I agree it's indicative. In practice the government will make those rules or not, and those rules have not been promulgated.

Afghanistan: Stay home, female Kabul government workers told - BBC News

The Kabul mayor has told female government employees to stay at home unless the job cannot be carried out by a man.

He cites cleaning women's toilets as an example of where they can still work.

All going to plan then.
