The New York Times - Major Climate Change Rules the Trump Administration Is Reversing

The move to rescind environmental rules governing emissions of methane, a powerful greenhouse gas, brings to 84 the total number of environmental rules that the Trump administration has worked to repeal.

 

Officials at the White House, the Environmental Protection Agency and other agencies have called the regulations burdensome to the fossil fuel industry and other businesses.

 

Half of those environmental rollback attempts, like the new methane reversal, will undercut efforts by previous administrations to reduce emissions and fight climate change.

 

Many of these efforts have been challenged in the courts; whether the administration will succeed in achieving all of its goals is far from certain.

 

Here are some of the most significant climate-related reversals:

For days now, President Trump has been embroiled in a public feud of sorts with Fox News, because he’s angry that the network isn’t functioning dutifully enough as his 24/7 propaganda channel. ...

 

On Thursday night, Fox’s Neil Cavuto unleashed a lengthy rebuke to Trump. In it, Cavuto pointedly noted: “Mr. President, we don’t work for you.”

 

This was a response to Trump’s rage-tweet excoriating the network: “We have to start looking for a new News Outlet. Fox isn’t working for us anymore!”

 

Trump is angry, Cavuto argued, because on occasion Fox doesn’t sufficiently whitewash his failures and lies. ...

 

Trump expects and demands that Fox News hew to this propagandistic narrative entirely. 

 

But, even more to the point, he publicly and unabashedly tells his supporters that he expects and demands it. ...

 

Trump’s unabashed and open assertion of impunity is a central feature of his corruption. 

 

This public flaunting of that corruption - of our governing institutions and discourse alike - compounds it and makes it all the more corrosive.

As the president’s top aides prepared for a high-stakes meeting on the future of Afghanistan earlier this month, one senior official was not on the original invite list - national security adviser John Bolton.

 

The attendance of the top security aide would normally be critical, but the omission was no mistake, senior U.S. officials said.

 

Bolton, who has long advocated an expansive military presence around the world, has become a staunch internal foe of an emerging peace deal aimed at ending America’s longest war.

 

His opposition to the diplomatic effort in Afghanistan has irritated President Trump, and led aides to leave the National Security Council out of sensitive discussions about the agreement. ...
