So i am not in any way even close to this region however I have been following this by-election very closely as there are major implications if Winston Peters wins.

National has bowled in throwing their weight behind Mark Osborne and promising bridge's up the wazoo.

Labour has said we don't mid if  you vote for Peters and not our candidate in fact we would probably prefer it.

National thought this was a safe seat however now I think they beginning to realize this is not the case.

Anybody else following this closely.

National really are running out of good candidates. First Aaron Gilmore, then Claudette Hauiti and now this drongo. They deserve to lose the seat.

Meanwhile, Andrew Little has made a big mistake by implying that Labour supporters should vote for Winston. Taking the moral high ground over dirty electorate deals was a vote winner for Labour, and now they will never be able to do that again.

I'm having to force myself to be interested in this since it's where I live and the bunch in the seat right now are numpties (the sewage treatment works being the prime example!)

So far Winston is making all the right noises and most folks on the local Facebook page are for him .. pretty sure he is going to win, then we'll see how much of what he's been talking about he can deliver!

All I see is this costing the taxpayer a fortune, all for the "Winston Show".  It won't stop there as he has proven to be a cantankerous and difficult old goat who just likes putting a spanner in the works...that said I kinda like a lot of what he stands for.

I feel sorry for the Labour lass, talk about being dumped on by your own boss, she will never recover from that embarrassment.

I do get sick of all the kindergarten games, I wonder how much more they could actually achieve if they just got on with the business of running the country.

I guess they will soon have the additional GST from iTunes to pay for it ;-)

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

So true. I met Winston several times when I worked in Parliament. Always polite and pleasant but it seemed a bit of a veneer.

If bridges are what wins elections these days, we can look forward to many new ones on the West Coast should that seat become vacant! There's plenty of scope for improvement on that road.

The insider story is, central labour party have no interest in this by election because of money/funding issue. It turns out that the local chapter really want to be in this by election. Hence, why andrew little appear not to really care much about this.

My issue with the election is our flawed MMP process. If Winston wins and there is a possibility that he might, NZ First will get another MP and that alters the balance of power.

NZ First doesn't have any more say in Government but now Peter Dunne can flex his muscles since he is not as tame as Act. He has already indicated he would attempt to renegotiate his agreement with the Govt and possibly try to block some legislation around the RMA that he is not in favour of or perhaps propose some wacky legislation that wouldn't normally get any air time but National would be compelled to at least consider.

All from a party whose party votes are a rounding error!

That's politics, and coalition government.  Having Peter Dunne as a more powerful moderating influence is why the #NotNational supporters are voting for Winston. In my opinion that will be good for the country, with a bit more checks and balances to restrain the more ideological legislation that is coming up.

My in-laws LOVE Winston.

I don't think he has any place in government.

We don't discuss politics at family things anymore.

As a disinterested party - I am entirely unaware of the day-to-day of the byelection. TV News was a bit too busy with the cricket.

I think you will find that it's the "Mike Sabin show" now costing the taxpayer a fortune. Winston throwing his hat into the ring as a consequence is not at taxpayer expense.

Correct, if it was not for 'wasted' 4%+ party votes of conservative, 1%+ Mana, National will get less seat than they currently is.

The only way to minimze this rounding error is to reduce the threshold. That means it will become more 'messy' as there will be many smaller parties in the coalition.

I am surprised they have put such a weak person on this seat. At least they could have put someone young and fresh. Although the guy they have got maybe younger than he looks. He just has no charisma, which is needed.

I think it will be good if National loses the seat because they have become quite arrogant since winning, and this will keep them on their feet.

It would cost the same whether he was in it or not. But agreed that it is all a huge waste of money, but it all gets recycled back into the economy.
