I got a pretty random automated call from "09-886 2796" asking for me to do an automated election survey. It went like this:

Hello, this is an election survey. The survey will take 1min of your time.
Who will you be voting for in the next general election? (rattles off from here).

Anyone else getting this? I ended up hanging up as I couldn't be bothered dealing with it...

There'll be a National one in our front paddock at some point.

I got that call but Samsung has a clever system that identified it as 'spam' on the caller ID! I blocked it.

Seems like a remarkably dumb way to conduct a poll when presumably the fact that they're behind in the polls is blindingly obvious, and that a rather more detailed survey to find out why and what policy issues need to be focused on, if they're going to turn that around before the election.

I presume that Labour still has enough active supporters to get on the phones and do their own polling. OTOH one of the most blindingly obvious answers as to what could be done to improve Labours chances won't make an internal pollster popular as they pass it up the chain.

The first question - if you quoted it verbatim - is pretty meaningless, as it doesn't ask party or electorate vote.

Automated calls like this are irritating, and I always hang up on them.

In a way they are insulting, because they don't value your opinion enough to use a "real person" to talk to you.

They also tend to ring during meal times, which is not acceptable.

If a real person phoned me at a convenient time, identified clearly who they were, and asked for my opinion on a subject that interested me, I would consider responding.

"One minute" surveys that last 10+ minutes are another pet hate of mine.

Yes, that is exactly the way I feel too. If they can't even be bothered to pay the minimum wage to someone to do this work, then they don't deserve any response. They are not factoring in that my time costs, they are not getting my time for free.

I believe they have laws that prevent this sort of thing in some overseas countries. IMO it is far worse than spam. We do now have laws that prevent email, and txt spam, but not these automated calls.

What was the actual question or series of questions? Exact wording is fairly important.

A lot of the time if my phone doesn't ID the number I don't even bother to answer it. They can leave a message if it's important and I'll call them back.

If "quality" survey would randomise the order of the option for each party.

It would be interesting to see if someone got the same call and the order of the option for their phone call.

This is the reason why phone communications are dying. Not only the scam calls, automated calls, making having a phone a bit of a pain and time waster. But also people waiting for calls to go to voicemail to screen them, even though many people don't like to leave messages these days, so if they don't get through, that's often it.

A political party that clings to old technology in this way does not project an open, future-oriented mentality. If they want votes from anyone under 60, they better learn about social media.
