Apparently the Internet Party have just announced their new leader - something to do with an election coming up, I guess.

The new leader currently lives in Moscow, and has been seeking temporary asylum in Russia since 2016, saying the New Zealand Government have been harassing her and threatening her family due to her reporting on the GCSB.

Putting aside however strange that might sound, surely a NZ Political Party that wants to genuinely campaign in the NZ Election should choose leadership that at least lives in the same country?? Or am I missing something obvious here??

Why are the rules around who can legally get involved in Central Government Politics so loose that it doesn't even matter what country you live in?

Sigh....

love the fact that she moved to Moscow to get away from the government harassing her. Frying pan and fire come to mind

Sounds like a paranoid nutter to me:

"While teams of reckless security agents profit off politically persecuting New Zealanders, with no hope of accountability or justice, I will not be able to return to New Zealand."

The government had "driven the country into the ground" in "servitude to its foreign Deep State masters" over the last three years.

I really not sure what voters they target?
I can't imagine what sort of person would waste a vote on an "Internet Party".

Had a bit of a giggle at the load of crap this "citizen journalist" spouted in those articles. Easy to make comments like that though I suppose. No surprises that she wasn't asked for any proof of her claims.

Not sure what NZ she was living in but it seems a benefit to everyone that she's gone and by the sounds of it won't be back.

Also:

"Exile is not a choice and although I seldom talk about the price that I have paid it has been incredibly high and not just paid by me,"

Seems to me it is totally her choice, pretty sure she doesn't have any criminal charges against her so she's not hiding from that and the last time I looked the Men in Black and the Illuminati do care what country you try and hide in.

You know what? Go to Moscow and get a bit of the "freedom" Putin gives to opposition leaders, journalists and dissenters. Yes, that's the ticket.

Some people are just crazy stupid.

The Internet Party won zero seats in the 2014 election. I expect with this new leader, they'll at least triple that number this time around.

Whilst I agree that the-party-formerly-known-as-the-Kim-DotCom-Club has continued to make itself look foolish with it's choice of head wierdo "leader", I was also asking a more serious question:

Why do we seem to allow people who don't reside in NZ to get involved in our National Politics? Surely NZ Citizenship AND being a current NZ resident should both be mandatory for leadership roles in political parties,

from the electoral commission. to be a candidate in the general election " A candidate must be enrolled as a voter and be a New Zealand citizen, they must also comply with the rules on election donations, expenses, advertising, promotion and broadcasting. So, in theory, she could run in the election from Moscow if she wanted, it seems you dont have to live in the country.
