It seems that most Ozzie politicians are actually Kiwis. I wonder if that means they will start treating us better now? Or may be they will just ask for NZ benefits?

Kiwis get great benefits in Aus, actually better than any other country on earth.
Now before you jump up and down spurting flames, have a little think about it.
We get a free pass into Australia (Can buy a house, and work)! No visa/permanent residence required. Awesome!!! If we want more benefits than that, and decide to stay long term, well then we should do what everybody else has to do and apply for PR/Citizenship. Its not a right to expect Australia to give us the same benefits as Australia citizens. We can claim that right when we take up citizenship.
The Ozzie politicians you mentioned are not just your usual kiwis in Aus. These Kiwis have duel citizenship (Aus and NZ), so they will be entitled to all of those benefits.
And thats my 2cents on the whole thing.

So in the spirit of reciprocity you are advocating that NZ should impose these restrictions on Australian Citizens here?

Yes we should. And I find it really stupid that we don't.
We should be returning the favor. Not sure why I should be happy that my tax money is spent on Australians living in New Zealand, if they have not bothered to apply for PR/Citizenship here like all other immigrants.
I say cut him loose, do we really want him as a NZ citizen?
or in fact do we want the several thousand kiwis working in Aussie(long term) still to be kiwi citizens, when they pay no tax here or contribute to our society, yet send their kids back here for cheaper Uni education?
I dont know all the answers, just the questions:P

If you talking about the Aus deputy PM, thats not going to happen. He is both a NZ and Aus Citizen, therefore he should always be entitled to full benefits in both countries. Thats the benefit of dual citizenship.
Some countries like the US don't allow dual citizenship.if you are a US citizen and you immigrate you cannot allpy to be a citizen in another country unless you denounce your US citizenship. Maybe its time NZ/Aus did the same.

This is not true and hasn't been for many years. Some countries have rules like this but America isn't one of them.

I think NZ should immediately bestow citizenship on every present and wannabe Australian politician.
Labour does seem to be meddling where it shouldnt be....
At the same time Bishops arrogance is pathetic and clearly indicates her dislike for NZ.
If you are referring to our Labour I think that was just one MP, who was immediately disciplined by a not very pleased Jacinda Ardern.

Questions in the house are available long before question time...as a front bencher he should have known better.
At any rate the readers comments in smh.com.au are giving it hard to the Aussies. Kinda sad that a top Aussie Minister responds in such a way...despicable really and obviously very desperate as this issue may well force an election there as well.
It wasn't a question in the house though. It was a written question from an MP to a Government department. Seeking clarification on an obscure piece of legislation. Fairly standard stuff, however usually it would be within the confines of the MP's area of interest (As opposition spokesperson for education it would not be in his portfolio interest) or related to a request from a constituent. I think what happened in the house was National MPs making an issue out of it when he went to ask questions in the house and they retorted back asking if he was asking on behalf of the Australian Labour party. Basically using this controversy to try to deflect any criticism of them he may have.

The Aussies are calling this exactly what it is - a pretty desperate bit of deflection by their government, which is hanging by a thread over an issue entirely of their own making. Our media aren't quite as smart. I was watching the AM show this morning - Duncan Garner was interviewing an Australian journalist and repeatedly tried to get her to say that NZ Labour was at fault here. She steadfastly refused and rightly said this has nothing to do with NZ.
Quite sad that our government has also sensed the opportunity to get a boot in during an election campaign and as such has poured fuel on the fire rather than renouncing the accusation as ridiculous (and, ironically, blatant tampering in our electoral process). It's not entirely surprising, as National has a fairly strong link to the Liberal party in Australia - they both use Crosby Textor and the Liberals have previously campaigned for NZ National in Australia.
All that said, I have no idea what Hipkins was thinking. There was no upside for him or NZ Labour of asking that question, especially in the runup to our own election, and his explanation that he didn't understand why he was asking it doesn't wash. It was also entirely unnecessary because the process of requesting an official position from the DIA had been started by Aussie journalists days earlier.
Aussies, no surprises there
I usually dont watch the leftish show called Project on TV3, but Mulligans rant on Australia's way of treating kiwis these days isnt far off the mark.
Clearly it is Australia interfering in a NZ election which is quite bad.
Great big own goal by Chris Hipkins. He could have found out the answer to the question by phoning around the relevant government departments. What on earth was he thinking? The average swinging voter in NZ probably does not give a rats ass about dual citizenship of an Aussie politician. If he thought this stunt would advance Labour's electoral chances he must be on some really really good stuff...
Add this to the long list of own goals by Labour such as appointing David Shearer & Andrew Little as leaders.
